Customising Armour

I had wanted to try a merchant character for a while, but before I want to know if it's worth it. Now I know this is something that will take some work, but after talking to Badcompany1010 (The dude who plays Frum) I feel it will be really quite rewarding to play a merchant character. But as opposed to just doing a Frum Highill clone, I decided to try and do something different. Now after watching the response to the limiting of dyes, and personal experience. I have realised just how much people care as to how they look when they are walking around. I'm sure many of you have been stung by trying to craft a cool piece of armour and cringing every time you failed losing even more money although it can only cost 2-3 gold a shot for simple garments, armour with lots of bonuses and such can cost hundreds an attempt to craft. So here is the idea. If I created a merchant dedicated to customising armour and creating cool looking custom outfits etc etc. Would you use him?

Only problem is magical items... it gets realy expensive :) I think it would be awesome, i thought of taking it (but took another skill point lol, so i ruined it)

Thats why I thought of this, after burning nearly 2k on a half finished piece of customised armour. I realised that it is still expensive, but it still works out cheaper than doing it yourself because the chance of failiure is greatly reduced. Also, with heavily enchanted items, the DC goes up quite considerably too.

Edit: To clarify: If you DO care about how your armour looks, would you be willing to pay someone to craft something for you if it was expensive/ high DC?

yes, that's why i think its great idea... especially if you're a dwarf... but you need to think of the price, its a start up of a sort... :)

Well the way I envisioned it, I could imagine only people with quite a bit of coin coming forward for something big, but if they did, I would only need to get one commision a week to be able to survive easliy. And there there are slightly poorer people who are going to struggle with paying for the cost of crafting normal full plate. Also, you would only be paying for one "squirt" of dye as opposed to the whole pot.

Most of my good aligned characters would seek you out to work on their armor. Additionally, many factions are looking for skilled metal workers if that appeals to you.

Well I did a test run with a character. And this could actually work. People really want their armour to co-ordinate. If this takes off this creates an almost totally new game. Great fun :D

personally as long as your armor keeps you alive. i do not know why you would want to waste a precious 2k

I think the reason magical stuff can't/is expensive to be altered has been mentioned by DMs before.

Armour of Spikes that is described a super spiky piece that, due to it's spikiness shoot's Manticore spines 1/day that is changed and ends up with no spikes kinds of ruins the entire thing. Same with dying Helmet of the Rainbow to grey.

customised armour is always good, i think at least.

it helps a character become a little more invidual if they where their own colours and style.

This idea is excellent! Even though it might be real exspensive :p

prehaps ye should modify just normal clothes too!

hmmm theres now an armor maker in the mines (grumbstuble) i screwed around and fortunatly i hadn't the gold to make the armor...i am just wondering...why the hell is there an armor maker and not a weapon maker ?

Yeah, thanks to those of you who made my little armouring halfling fun to play while it lasted. Goos fun for all.

Sorry Clucky!

Lol, no worries. As you said, a custom system was in the works for ages.

I just thought you meant I would be driven out of business.

I have yet to look at the new crafting system, what is it?

Hop in and take a look, I though it was realy sweet. Except the the Pillar in the tailors place tht keeps blocking my camera. >.>
