Bug Reports / Amulets disappearing
February 22, 2019, 11:37:39 PM

Doing the rat-cheese quest, I thought I'd finished collecting what-if charms. I used my rat-catcher pin by accident thinking it was a what-if charm. I unequipped it, and a few moments later swapped in a What-if Ward of Badbloods, and used its unique property.

Maybe 30ish seconds later, the what-if charm disappeared from my inventory, and I assumed I had been the victim of a pickpocket.
So I tried again, and this time observed the game eat an amulet that I didn't even have when I'd walked through Ticker Square.

I did NOT have multiple copies of the rat-catcher guild pin.
I DID have multiple copies of the other two amulets I lost.
Could this be related to the healing kits that are disappearing?

Introductions and Group Management / Ring running crew
February 16, 2019, 03:18:31 PM
With respect to OWN who is doing their own thing in a time zone incompatible with mine...

My motivation for recruiting in this way is that I've got a busy personal life and I can't engage with efu the way I want to. Being too busy to log on when awesome things are happening (that my character should be involved in)  has historically left me feeling guilty and depressed, so I really just want something structured that I can plan around.

I'm looking to get a group together for scheduled weekly ring running. I'd like this to be a quasi PnP style experience, with our characters only really advancing in XP when together.

Getting to ring 1 should be each character's highest goal, with minimal regard for local politics. In short, this would be an ideal group for alts.

I'd like to get 6-8 people, with a well-balanced, classical D&D party, and meet at the same time every week.

I'm working 8-5EST and Fridays are not available. I'm leaning toward Monday or Tuesday nights from 7pm to midnight at the latest, but these aren't the only options.

Hit me up on Discord and we can hash out the details.

Bug Reports / Royal Apartments Cleanup
January 22, 2019, 04:22:53 AM
This quest, when taken, creates a journal entry for the 'Blue Sun Tenements Infestation', but the Royal Apartments are never called the Blue Sun Tenements anywhere else. The quest description names the location appropriately.

When I entered, not the first person on this reset to have done so, no enemies spawned. I couldn't find a completion trigger anywhere, either, so I had to abandon the quest.

Suggestions / Skill Feats
January 21, 2019, 12:46:36 AM
If possible, it would be lovely to see more feats like thug/snake blood/stealthy/alertness/courteous magocracy:

Level 1 feats that give +2 to some complementary pair of skills.

I asked about this in Discord and it was suggested that this isn't possible, but I figured I'd throw it out there in writing just in case.

Bug Reports / Under Alice's Bookshop, quest turn-in
January 20, 2019, 11:19:27 PM
The dialog option for Alice McGillivray's quest turn-in is randomized each time the conversation is opened.

After cycling it three times, I got one that said:

"[This should never happen. Please bug report."

Maybe this is an appropriate time to lock/archive public notices & etc, and open fresh, clean, boards, in their place?

Alt Title: "21 THINGS YOU WISH YOU KNEW ABOUT NWN MECHANICS BEFORE DYING AT 20700XP"
This thread is for miscellaneous mechanical tips that are second-nature for veterans, but might not be obvious to people who haven't been playing for hundreds of years.

Disclaimer: Always build your character according to story first, and mechanical advantage second. Take nothing written here as gospel.

Dealing with Attacks of Opportunity:
Each creature in NWN can only make one Attack of Opportunity per combat round.

AoOs happen when you enter or leave a 5-foot radius of a hostile creature while running. If you are not being targeted by the enemy already, you can disengage from combat, switch on detect mode (or use shift+click) to walk out of the threatened area safely, and THEN run to safety.

You can also run toward an enemy and switch to walking the last bit of distance for a more cautious charge. I've heard mixed opinions on whether this is OK, but in my view, you don't get an attack bonus from charging (like you would from the maneuver of that name in Pathfinder), and you risk letting the spellcaster finish their spell if you don't get to them as fast as possible.

AoOs also happen when you drink a potion in a threatened area. Wands, scrolls, miscellaneous items, equipment special powers, charged items, */day powers, and so forth will not provoke AoOs. The trade-off with potions is that you can drink two potions per round. For this reason if you're drinking in combat, you should always queue two potions at a time, particularly if you're drinking healing.

The Mobility and Spring Attack feats will increase your AC against AoOs provoked by movement, or remove AoOs from movement altogether. If you don't have spring attack or tumble ranks, you have a 100% chance of provoking an attack of opportunity. However, for a character in cloth armor, a single rank in tumble will grant a 30% chance to avoid provoking AoOs. (d20 + 1 vs DC 15 means rolling a 14 or better will succeed.) Gear conferring a tumble bonus is ubiquitous, and can usually be worn by anyone, and every tumble point above 0 gives a 5% chance of preventing AoOs. That 5% could be the scythe crit from Bobo that would have killed your squishy PC in a single hit.

Health Management:
Uninjured status means you're above 95% HP.
Barely Injured means 75-95%.
Injured means 50%-75%.
Badly Wounded means 25-50%,
Near Death means below 25%.

The biggest killer of PCs is sudden, bursty damage from unexpected critical hits or from sneak attacks. There is not much you can do about either, except avoid being in the position to take those hits. If you can't avoid it though, the /next/ best thing is to keep your hit points topped up as much as possible, so that when those hits DO come, you'll still be on your feet afterward.
This isn't always practical on your own, so as a good guideline, if your PC IS on their own, goes into injured status, and can't safely heal, that is a very good time to consider running away.
If you are playing a support or healing character, the expectation is that you will keep your front liners either Uninjured or Barely Injured as much as possible.
If a group's front-liner drops into Badly Wounded/Near Death/Bleeding, something is very wrong, and it may be time to reassess your party's tactics and fitness for the challenge at hand.

Learn what spells can improve your survivability. There are three primary approaches:
Absorb More Hits: Spells like Endurance, Aid; Some bard songs, Stone Skin, Endure/Resist/Protection from Elements, all act as flat bonuses on top of you current hit points, and will give you time to heal or make decisions in combat.

Get hit less: Spells like Barkskin, Shield, Mage Armor, Haste, and Cat's Grace may increase your AC. For monks, include Owl's Wisdom
Ghostly Visage, Displacement, and Improved Invisibility grant Concealment which confers a flat miss chance to enemy attacks, calculated BEFORE they roll, meaning they can miss you even on a 20 if your concealment effect works.

Take Less Damage: The potion of plur (Ghostly Visage) is probably the single best potion for low to mid-level PvE. Conferring 5/+1 damage reduction, and 10% concealment by default (but boostable to 20% with GSF: Illusion), blur can make you nearly invincible in hectic situations against enemies who don't have magic weapons. Stoneskin and the elemental resistance potions also fall in this category, but were placed above because of their 'point' limitations.

Note that creatures with DR of their own get an automatic enhancement bonus to their creature weapons. So an imp with 5/+1 DR will pierce 5/+1 DR. Keep this in mind when tanking creatures with heavy DR, you may be better off with a concealment spell, or higher AC.

There's dozens or hundreds of more little quirks, things that are useful to know, and these only scratch the surface. I open the floor to anyone who'd like to add some of their own insights, and as I remember more of these things, I'll swing back by this thread to add them on. Hopefully this can be a useful resource for players who are really struggling with getting past the level 6 difficulty curve.

Next time I'll try to talk about positioning in combat, and the virtues of teamwork (and how to do teamwork right.)

I came up with the idea of Hope while reading a psychology text about why people are divided by politics and religion. I dreamt of Hope as a reconciler, someone who could befriend even the wicked, and turn them to good. A Joan d'Arc to rally a group of believers. I imagined this perfectly angelic person becoming worshipped, and personally ascending to the divine. Which is how I put together Paladin, Aasimar, and Posiivist, in a single app. I think the DMs were laughing their asses off when they allowed it, because had seriously given no thought to the mechanics of the build before putting the app in.

It was rough. I don't recommend it.

In terms of backstory, she was indeed an Aasimar of Ilmater, her sign being the constant flow of tears. Ilmater's tears, not for the dead, but for the living who must continue to suffer.
Her name, 'Hope', was gifted to her by the convent that took her in as an abandoned orphan. Salette, for the street where they found her. And for Our Lady of La Salette.

Hope was pretty quickly pulled into the Fount by Obediah and Savhoste, shortly after what's-his-name bombed the bank in the House of Trade. Same day the Workmill was bombed.

Some things to reflect on: I was not ready for the constant conflict of a paladin, or the feeling of obligation to intercede in moral dilemmas, nor the requirement of mechanical prowess to be successful. I was often stressed and annoyed with myself for failing to play the 19/20 base CHA, and the reconciler that I had intended.

It was cool being a spellsword-style-positivist, with a sword that could throw a healing fireball in the middle of a melee with undead. On my final day I got to fulfill my goal of throttling an evil undead back to death with chained combusts. Detect Evil wasn't worth the trouble it brought, though. Not one bit.

Anyway, I've got work in 4 hours, I'm going to sleep. I'll try and get some screenshots up tomorrow.

Some of the Symbols which should drop from defeated creatures (eg the Dervish, or the Shadow boss) do not drop.

Other symbols which are found in containers do seem to appear normally.

Suggestions / Improve Identify with Spell Focus
April 08, 2018, 05:54:08 AM
This is to suggest that Spell Focus (Divination? I think?) should cause the Identify Spell to once again confer a bonus to the caster's Lore skill.

Perhaps +4 for Spell Focus, and an additional +4 for Greater Spell Focus?

NWN:EE Frequently Asked Questions

[hide=When is EFU making the move to NWN:EE?]

EFU is up and running on Enhanced Edition now!

There have been some growing pains with certain NWNX features that haven't made it into EE yet. As a result some EFU Features are broken and may be a little while coming back.

At time of writing, that includes: Persistent Storage, Dynamic Placeable names/descriptions, Custom Weapon Feats
[/hide]

[hide=Where is nwn.ini? nwnplayer.ini?  portraits folder?]

In NWN:EE, Beamdog changed where user data files get stored. On Windows, if you open your File Explorer, and select 'Documents' from your Libraries, you should have a Neverwinter Nights folder containing:

ambient/
database/
dmvault/
hak/
localvault/
logs/
modules/
movies/
music/
override/
portraits/
servervault/
tempclient/
tlk/
cdkey.ini
nwn.ini
nwnplayer.ini

On Linux, this folder might not be in ~/Documents
If that's the case, look for it in ~/.local/share/

You can create a link in your Documents folder to that folder using the following commands from Terminal:

cd ~
#if ~/Documents already exists, skip the next command
mkdir Documents
ln -s ~/.local/share/Neverwinter\ Nights ~/Documents/Neverwinter_Nights
[/hide]

[hide=My mouse cursor is acting up?]
You might be having a problem where your mouse cursor seems to double-click or jump around when you're working with your inventory or quickslots. To fix this, open up your nwn.ini file and set Enable Hardware Mouse=1
[/hide]

[hide=How do I change the name I appear as when I log into a server?]
The first time you log in to a server, you'll get an opportunity to set your username, and choose whether you want it to be your default. If you set it as default, and want to change it later, open nwnplayer.ini and set the line
Player Name=somenewname[/hide]

[hide=How do I install EFU's haks?]
Refer to this guide here![/hide]

[hide=I'm having graphics problems!]
Try opening your video options, selecting 'Advanced Video Options' and un-ticking boxes one at a time, to see if that makes any improvement.
[/hide]

[hide=How do I install custom overrides?]
If you're using Steam, the Steam Workshop is an extremely convenient way to install overrides! unfortunately the selection there is still pretty limited, so you won't be able to get everything you love. However, the classical process of unzipping files into your overrides folder still works!
The only difficult part is finding the overrides folder, and we answered that already in "Where is nwn.ini...".

Bug Reports / Parrot Familiar loses Eagle's Splendor
March 03, 2018, 02:03:20 AM
Not sure if it's a bug. Parrot familiar has Eagle's Splendor at lower levels but eventually hits a level where eagle's splendor gets replaced with something else.

Suggestions / Post Attachments Size
December 14, 2017, 08:07:00 PM
Currently attachments are limited to a maximum size of 128KB. This is too small for even a small image. It seems like it would be better to either turn off attachments altogether (I'm not sure how possible this really is...) or raise the limit to maybe 768KB and the overall limit for a post to 8MB. I came to these numbers by converting a regular NWN screenshot to JPG and found the size came to be 613KB.

I don't know what the storage/bandwidth allowance situation is for the forums, though, so if that would be an issue, well, imgur is a thing.

Suggestions / Breadcrumbs at top of thread
December 14, 2017, 07:42:58 PM
Currently there is a breadcrumb trail at the bottom of each page to return to previous pages. Can we have a breadcrumb trail added above the standard viewport? (or just below the huge sliding banner at the top)

The subject banner on posts is huge and hideous

Suggestions / Extra Forum Fonts
December 14, 2017, 06:46:18 PM
Something that was dearly missed in the previous iteration of the forums were the custom fonts implemented during the EFUA/M era, typefaces that more closely resembled various types of handwriting.

I seem to remember that the 'Salt' typeface was particularly well-loved, but anything would be good.

Suggestions / Nested Quotes plz
September 03, 2017, 11:46:12 PM
We all know that vBulletin is trash. Can we please get support of some kind for including Nested Quotes in replies? From the Council Forums, we need to reply to messages containing quotations, concerning the contents of those quotations pretty much ALL THE TIME. Since the 'quote' button strips out the inner quotes, and just copy/pasting loses formatting, a user who makes a revision on a previous message somehow will have to completely re-do the formatting of the original, unless other clumsy workarounds are made. (Like somebody posting the markup of their post in quote tags alongside the post itself).

This mod appears to have the desired effect: https://www.vbulletin.org/forum/showthread.php?t=

Suggestions / Coming Soon to a Bonepit Near You...
June 22, 2017, 11:26:53 PM
A pillar arises beside the Bonepit.

On it are scribed these words:
In blood compose thine name upon this altar,
and know the Hunt thee join.

Great power and riches await the ruthless,
but be ware forever the Sport:
All Hunters know the fear of their blood
and that their lives are assuredly short

This is a scripted template applied to characters in the fashion of Covenants from the "-Souls" series, and I will adopt that term from here on.

Anyone may join this Covenant, regardless of race or class, though some factions might be leary of those who do.

Upon "signing" the altar, a message will be broadcast to all hunters currently in-game, and the PC will be given a unique, weightless token that drops on death. It might be an Ear (in homage to Diablo 2), or some other trophy appropriate to the covenant.

The PC's name will also be added to a list of names, sorted as most recent first, going back to the original name written. There will also be a list of PCs currently in game, and a number indicating how many trophies each holds. These details may only be viewable by a member of the Covenant

Members of the Covenant will have a tool by which to identify other members of the Covenant, but it must be used in person and at touch range (2.25meters), though the action does not actually require physical touch to apply. It may be used as a free action, and while in combat. It may be considered a supernatural ability, behaving like scent, but may be interpreted as a sixth sense, a precious stone, an instinct, intuition, or otherwise, within reasonable restrictions.

No hunter may have fewer than one trophy ((a few ways to handle this: make all items in the trophy shop cost at least 2 trophy points and immediately refund one if you hit 0... sounds buggy..., have "trophy points" be analogoues to favor, insubstantial, and favor points are just claimed by getting the killing blow on another Covenant PC))
All trophies held by a Hunter are forfeit to a victor on death.

Trophies may be redeemed in varying amounts to a Covenant-only shop, with larger trophy totals representing significant value, but smaller trophy totals being significant enough that foregoing them in favor of banking is a substantial risk.

One of the trophy-rewards is to hide from the Hunt, and have your name removed from the lists of all active Hunters for a period of time.
Another trophy-reward of considerably higher value is to immediately and permanently quit the Hunt, no longer be tracked, and no longer receive the benefits of the Covenant.
The Ultimate trophy is to be retired as a victor, and have a statue of yourself in your honor posted up in the Bonepit.

Additional flavor ideas:
Each new Hunter is gifted with a class-appropriate gift of their choosing, which is undroppable, always-equipped, and has substantial damage vulnerabilities and damage immunities, plus class-appropriate effects.

Monster PCs are automatically entered into this hunt. The exceptions are Were-creatures with the apped intention of remaining discreet, and generally more civil 'humanoid' types, eg genasi, tiefling, aasimar, etc. In other words, primarily the goblinoid, and reptilian races.

Perhaps a special EXCEPTION to the PvP rule surrounding quest-areas. All members of the Covenant are known to all others, so everyone has a VERY GOOD reason to not trust questing with another one, and should not have the protection of it being a quest-area to reassure himself that he won't be murdered the instant his back is turned.

Managing bullshit:
    Stand-out concerns:
"Feeding" - players generating characters to feed eachother. Apart from being desperately obvious to anybody that it's happening (it's a semi-public leaderboard, transparent to the DMs), it's also a ban-worthy offense on the same level as transferring items between characters. If problematic, could be handled by joining characters being limited to one per CD key per month.

Single PCs dominating - That's the point though, to make legends of the certain characters who get the farthest in this challenge. The only way lower levels will ever get to team up is either having a high-level dominator to unite against, or one to unite UNDER. I'm talking about rival gangs grouping up around their powerful leaders and duking it out for survival in the apocalypse, like fucking Mad Max or something.

Min-maxed/Dull PCs - Does EFU not have enough safeguards against that already? I don't know, I'm actually not sure how to deal with this one. I'd like to believe we're better than that, and that even the min-maxed builds are at least played right.
Is there anything you fear more in-game than a group of min-maxed half-orcs roaming around looking to justify a fight?

If it's not fair, it's more interesting
That's been the secret motto of EFU for 10 years

Nobody may coerce another into joining the covenant by force, for the immediate intention of murdering them and taking their trophy.
Corollary: If you're going after somebody who isn't a Hunter just to make them a Hunter and take their trophy is called being a shitlord, not a villain.

Any character may join the Covenant at any time (or level), but may have less favorable choices from the set of trophy-rewards and/or startup gifts (if included) if they join at higher levels.

Meta-justification:
This is also something that would be good to have in place in times and seasons when DM attention is not very available,
where PCs can go out and murder eachother in the wilds all they like, get rewarded for it, and then get on with playing
Where PC watchers have criminal chasing to do, or become Hunters themselves, using their position and influence to exploit or murder weaker Hunters.
Where gangs are incentivized to exist for survival, because death can finally be senseless, but still justified within our rules (a very clear and intentional 'Opt-in', with rewards commensurate to the risks).

Bug Reports / Can't Create new characters
June 19, 2017, 02:37:25 AM
YIKES. Not liking this one.

Account: Obscure Alt
~10PM-10:30PM EST
Cleric with custom domain override Knowledge domain

Tried again to make a Fighter without custom domain, and still refused.

Heard another report about this from someone earlier today, not sure if anybody else has been able to make a character today?

this is what the vault looks like afterward:

If you go through the customize character process you can get another character of same name with (1) or (2) on the end, like localvaults do.
