Haven't played in awhile but planning on getting back into it; happy to see that EFU is still running and am looking forward to the times ahead

Quote from: Pentaxius;426694I agree, Shards online just isn't convincing from my point of view - and what exactly can they achieve with a 100k? Not much, I feel. Furthermore, I hate the comical graphic style of it all, but that's maybe just me.
Technically its 200k given that their supporters pledged to match whatever was raised in the kickstarter and given that they have a playable build at pre-alpha I would say is an impressive feat itself. As for the graphics to each his own but given that they have come from this http://www11.onrpg.com/wp-content/gallery/shards/shards-cultist-camp.jpg to this http://ultimacodex.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/01/shards-online-BlackForest.jpg or this http://images.mmorpg.com/features/9428/images/Shards2_t.jpg in a relatively short period of time and still being in pre alpha is pretty encouraging. From what they demonstrated of the toolset looks pretty promising I mean imagine being able to change the size of a creature with a simple script or make it explode into meat when you kill it. I am not too familiar with how  scripting worked in NwN but that seems to demonstrate a high degree of customability already. Time will tell I suppose

Graphically it's somewhere in between NWN1 and NWN2; but thats also judging by the first map Celador which is your typical high fantasy map. There are at least 4 to 5 other maps each with different themes. Terminus for example will probably look like something that EFU would do. Also, its important to keep in mind that you will be able to import custom assets onto your servers so it is concievable that folks will make things that fit the theme of their Shards thus changing the game's look all together.

Quote from: Random_White_Guy;424416Character Advancement Bonus. Bump it to level 6 or level 8. For every PC. Having played a Myconid I cannot say how refreshing it was to be able to interact with EFU in such a capacity as allowing a gradual XP flow for time put into the server.

DMs can't be everywhere and this allows PCs who are pushing things to still be rewarded without the nessecity of direct DM intervention.

This means that PCs who are doing things would get RP XP for things such as:
Banditry
Political schemes and actions
Merchant dealings
Expoloration of the Wilds
Antagonistic workings
Scholarly pursuits
Spying for PCs on other PCs
And there's more. Gladiator type PCs who just fight in the arena and similar could flourish with an advancement of the CAB. DMs can't be everywhere and PCs throw a lot of time into this server.

Promoting non-traditional EXP gain would allow people to pursue other avenues of RP and enterprise without being leaps and bounds behind the rest of the game.

People always say "YEAH BUT PEOPLE WOULD ABUSE IT" except people abuse every system. I'd rather have cool PCs getting levels to survive the ganksquad over the PCs who typically tend to acquire higher levels outright. There is such a culture of "Yeah that's a cool idea, we can talk about that later after we see to those Umberhulks" and similar in EFU because it is such an XP driven server.

I can tell you first hand trying to get people to explore the far ends of server is quickly overshadowed when someone mentions Spiders. "Oh, yeah that sounds cool but we should see to those Spiders first it sounds a far bigger threat".

An XP tick isn't that much and if people are online long enough for such to kick in then it's more likely than not they're up to something anyway. With the death rate on EFU it's not like we'd be inundated with 50,000 level 8 PCs and there is still the low level experience that so many people crave in a D&D environment.
This. All the way. Please

Shards Online looks like our best bet in terms of coming close to what NwN was. Player hosted servers, toolset, DM powers etc. Its not due out till 2016 and they are introducing things slowly so full on custom maps won't in until later but phase one of alpha will already be letting folks host servers and make gameplay changes. I know that folks are skeptical but in the same light the dev team behind this worked on UO which arugably the MMO which Neverwinter Nights got a lot of its ideas from (I think the Bioware developers admitted this) We'll see how it pans out some people are already talking about making a D20 ruleset for player run servers. In the mean time Sword Coast Legends even if it isnt the next NWN could be a lot of fun.

Not a next NWN; still betting on Shards for that but this looks like something that would be fun to play with some friends.

Shards will have a DM client which will let you do pretty much everything you wanted in NwN so I am not sure if you want to build a whole new game when another is going to be featuring that capability. What may be a better thing to do is to see how Shards turns out and if it doesn't have what you need see if there is a way you can modify it to have what you do want and if not than say screw it and do your own project. Its due in 2016 so its not that long of a wait.

Unity is highly powerful and flexible from everything I have been hearing you can even download it for free. But in this case given that there is already a game in development which will enable you to do pretty much everything you wanted in NwN and more might be worth the wait. Or kick in $200 to get into the pre modding program. BUT if you want to make your own game I suggest taking a look at this https://www.assetstore.unity3d.com/en/#!/content/7101 Looks very much like NwN 2

http://shardsonline.com/ Might want to check this out dude, this is the most promising thing to a spiritual sucessor to NWN in awhile. Pledges are back up so you can get into the prealpha admin program if you want to donate $200 myself I decided to pledge a lot lower but I am happy. This Q&A from the lead dev pretty much answers most of the questions your wondering https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sLithI0Xr0A Their youtube channel has already a couple videos up demonstrating their modding capabilities but if they pull this off this will have NwN capabilities and more. There is already a handful of NwN players there some of them are already making plans to port their respective worlds over to Shards and discussing writing a D20 ruleset. Hope to see you over there
