The "Cheese Under Siege" quest has had an "Exit" placable added, presumably to stop the rats from swarming out. That placable works fine, but the blue outline/normal doorway transition also still works as normal it seems, so the rats can still escape.

Not sure if the AI still chases on the placable transition or only if the PC uses the regular transition.

This results in damage to the dwarf thug NPCs and sometimes completely blocks the pathing out of the QA.

I'm not sure how to report this, other than that I got a message from the NPC in the post title trying to take the relevant quest. It went, more or less as follows:

"Nothing! Don't worry! // OOC This should never happen, please report this as a bug."

I tried again and took the quest no problem. There was no ding noise, weirdly. But no problem otherwise.

Her dialogue options for adding tattoos could use a confirmation. I had hoped to get some kind of preview or options (verbal or otherwise). Alas, once you select a body part it just happens.

Suggestions / Myconid Loot Suggestions
November 11, 2014, 04:39:35 AM
The myconid loot that we get by [insert myconid secrets here] is awesome and flavorful! It's not particularly diverse, however.

Here are some suggestions to add to the loot pool:

Cloth Armor - Myconids sorcerers get no armor loot! Something added for them would be nice.

Existing Mushroom'y Loot - The server is rife with shroom-styled stuff. A few of them could be dropped in!

Belts - Belts on EFU tend to be resistance stuff. That doesn't do myconids much good! Maybe some spore-dropping belts, with charges of Stinking Cloud or regular stinkbombs. Or Ultravision/Darkvision... since myconids don't get that naturally for some reason!

So, you should consider playing a Myconid!

Want to just talk about it or curious? Talk to me on IRC or shoot me a forum PM. I'm glad to talk about it and help you make up your mind whether you'd enjoy it or not.

Let's count the reasons why:

1. A phenomenal RP challenge, since you're now playing a Plant-like mushroom creature. How does a thinking mushroom feel, perceive, what does it want and need? Even weirder... you're playing in a world where things like you (humans) exist. We think fungi are weird AFK... imagine how a sentient fungi would deal with understanding people.

2. A GROWING community... okay, that play on words was bad. But it's very much a part of being myconid to partake in community. So that's cool.

3. You are totally relieved of thinking about XP, levels, and to a large extent loot as well. Myconids don't "gear up" by repeating clowns ten times. Questing isn't a bad part of EFU at all, but it's not the special sauce... and myconids don't have to do it to progress their character's strength. You can go do fun things and still grow stronger, acquire cool items, push plots, etc..

4. You're adorable. Seriously. We're the puppies of the Underdark. We're especially cute when we're small. Only assholes and RwG characters kick puppies, and even when they try...

5. You begin the game with major mechanical powers and defenses. You get immunity to pretty much everything. Including Immunity: Use Sword. Wait... uh, nevermind.

6. You can draw awesome character inspirations from the deep EFU/Underdark lore. Several of the concepts I've heard pitched or seen played so far revolve around some cool part of Underdark's natural forces. Because the mushroom men are both consumption oriented (and you are what you eat...) and have a pretty blank slate so far as customs and culture go, you've got lots of creative leeway.

7. Not super-interested in PvP? Almost universally, this race isn't going to be heavily involved in it. They have almost no mechanical reason for seeking PvP, they have no historical or cultural purpose for it, so you'll probably be left in peace... but...

8. Super-interested in PvP? Despite cultural disincentives towards fighting, there are massive mechanical benefits to myconids and myconids create a unique challenge for PvP situations for both the myconid and the aggressor when those rare people don't want to be your friend.

9. Everybody who doesn't want to kill you... usually likes you and probably wants to be your buddy! That makes fascinating conflict in and of itself. For good reasons, myconids make great friends! But that itself becomes a major part of myconid life in-game. You get this interesting sort of influence over events far and away from myconid life.

10. You're writing the first chapter of something new and awesome. This hasn't been done before, nor anything quite like it - even Stargazers pale in comparison to the raw uniqueness of myconid character roleplay. You're at the bleeding edge of defining a species and its culture, since the parameters for orthodox myconid behavior are exceedingly blurry.

Off-topic Discussion / Planetside 2, Garem's Op tonight
September 27, 2014, 08:17:42 PM
Howdy folks!

I know that some of you play PS2 (See: http://www.efupw.com/forums/showthread.php?t=82318) so I thought I'd invite y'all to come play with my Outfit tonight. We're just getting things rolling again after a quiet summer and our usual crew has an awesome array of talents: a battle sunderer expert, an anti-vehicle fighter pilots, a bunch of tank-breakers, several great squad/platoon leaders, and so forth.

If you're brand new, doesn't matter. We're happy to teach new folks and have plenty of experience doing so.

We play for the Terran Republic on the Emerald server (the merger result of Mattherson and Waterson). We get started at around 7:45 Central Time, 8:45 Eastern Time. Post here, catch me in IRC, PM me, or join our Teamspeak if you use TS at 104.131.6.148.

Off-topic Discussion / Mom and Dad Gaming, thoughts?
September 15, 2014, 08:47:21 PM
So a few buddies and I were talking about doing a video series about a mid-50s mom and/or dad with little or no video gaming experience and recording her/his experiences.

So before I explain the envisioning of the project, note that I am open to ANY suggestion. Anything can be changed, and you're all creative people and I value your input.

We don't want to do the "haha, look mom sux at video games, lol" at all. We want this to be a more intellectual approach, but draw comedy from reactions and conversation. I have two ladies in mind right now who are hysterical, so their personalities will drive the content.

Another possibility is going through a quick-history of games, so that the parent goes through video game history starting with Super Mario, then Link to the Past, then Starfox, then... you get the idea. There are technical problems with that (we'd have to use ROMs...) but it's possible. We also want to be sure to capture the interest of our player! I'm not sure a mom would be all that interested in Super Mario or Link to the Past. So we'd need to find relatively simple, linear, and engaging games. So...

What games would be interesting? I'm leaning towards popular narrative games, like Bastion (also easy to play!), Skyrim (on rails, under my direction to avoid 30000 hours of gameplay) and BioShock series. We would edit down to major scenes, funny parts, etc. but I hope that the whole game gets played through.

I have considered taking a political approach - almost all of the non-gamer adults I have in mind are right-leaning and well-educated. Many are religious, too. Would you be more or less likely to be interested in content because of the underlying political perspectives?

I also want to address in the videos why adults that age don't play games, what they liked about these games , what was off-putting.

What mediums would be best? Twitch recordings, Youtube, or written as an article with screencaps or short video clips?

Others have done similar things, but I've not been impressed with the personalities involved. Most are kind of "lol mom sux at games" which, again, I want to get away from.

At this point I'm rambling. Please chime in!

Suggestions / Documentation on Iron Ore, Amanite, etc.?
September 06, 2014, 07:36:57 AM
There is some stuff you can now get in the Underdark (no idea how long it's been that way, but IRC seemed utterly puzzled)... but you acquire it in a new and slightly weird way - attacking it. Iron Ore is the most easily recognizable.

There's not much documentation on this - what are these things? Are they just a new way to get items of general use, or for something specific?

How exactly are these resources retrieved - what skill checks, etc?

I've figured out one - farming - and that should probably be reflected on the EFUSS page. Most of the unknowns about these things are mechanical, not in-game discoveries, so having more clear information about that would be nice.

Bug Reports / Myconid "Weapon" - Login bug
September 04, 2014, 06:30:38 PM
When logging in to the server with a Myconid character, the "weapon" they use is removed.

It is fixed by leaving and relogging, however.

It doesn't appear to alternate between logins - just the first time logging in after restart causes the bug, I believe.

Off-topic Discussion / EfU's "Explained" Series Youtube
October 13, 2013, 08:19:04 PM
I was explaining EFU to a friend the other day, as I've done many times before. It's a challenge to put it all into a bite-sized nugget of information. For example, how can you possibly explain in one breath that EfU is a...

Persistent World, Online, Multiplayer, Quasi-Canon Forgotten Realms setting of Dungeons and Dragons via Neverwinter Nights One, Pre-Steampunk, Low Magic, High Fantasy, Character Roleplaying, Player-driven but Dungeon Master-guided, Storytelling, Survival-Horror, Mystery Solving, Action-Adventure Game

Good grief. That's a mouthful, and surely an incomplete description.

It's no wonder we have a hard time retaining players. The complexity that we love about EfU makes it hard to get into. People are naturally disinclined to exert effort over uncertain rewards - reading all the background material just to START EfU is challenging enough to keep plenty of great roleplayers away. That's a shame!

So, here's my proposal, and I need a lot of help with it.

I'm going to draw up a "storyboard" to explain EfU in a Youtube video, with a voice narrative and images to show every step of the way. An easier to digest format might go a long way in helping potential new players sink in to EFU.

I need help with...
- putting images together with the voicing.
- gathering those images to fit the voiced narrative.
- product testing/QA
- Youtube tools (in-video links, for example)
- things I'm sure I don't even realize yet
- voicing, maybe. My experience is pretty limited. If you think you have a great voice for this, let me know! No hard feelings if I don't think the fit is right.

If the product is successful (and I have guinea pigs aplenty to test it!) we'll move on to other important videos.

"How to Play" - making and following around a new character, explaining how character roleplaying and interaction works, questing, the death system, basic IG survival, what DM interaction means/looks like, "what the hell is metagaming", and so forth.

"History of EfU" - from a metagame perspective, where EfU started, the mysteries solved/unsolved along the way, and where we are now; this will be mostly compiling nice pictures and using the awesome stuff found here:
http://www.efupw.com/the-story-so-far/

...

So, if we have the right talent, let's do this.

For those that know what this is...

Anyone enjoy playing this?

I've been playing with a multiplayer clan for years now. It's fun as hell. We play the cRPG mod and Strategus - basically single-player, except multiplayer. Build armies, move them around the map, fight other players in 50 v 50 matches. Build up your own character, too, which doesn't take long at all.

Very teamwork heavy, and Teamspeak is required.

Some of the best gaming I've had outside of EfU.

---

For those that don't know Warband, it's a a skill-based game with a single and multiplayer game. The best part is its combat system, where a mousemove up and click swings from above, mouse down and click stabs, side moves swing sideways. Right click the direction parries incoming attacks - so it's a very fast paced duel. Learn to block or die. Or carry a thick steel shield and pray.

Even better, you can fight from foot or horseback. Each has its advantages and disadvantages. Move faster, do more damage. Time your swings right, do more damage. Hit with a half swing, do less damage - wind all the way up and make them hurt.

Singleplayer is loosely story driven open-world where you move armies around a map and lead them into battle personally. Or storm castle walls. Fight for a king, or fight against them all and found your own kingdom. Whatever the hell you want to do. It's worth the game just for that.

Suggestions / Deity Death - Running List change
July 17, 2013, 04:27:13 PM
Regarding the thread about gods dropping like they're on a Mort quest...
http://www.efupw.com/forums/showthread.php?p=344392#post344392

Can you mark the changes not only in the OP, but also in the subsequent "bump"/update threads?

This helps us see changes more quickly, and leaves a permanent list of deities' order of death.

I've got a small group of new players coming to the server soon, friends from other games I've played. They range from experienced MUDders to total novices.

I'll try to get them to stop being bashful and post in this thread. In the meantime, since I'm metaphorically caked in rust, any suggestions on how I can best introduce them to EfU?

Thought so far is to play washed up mercenary company surface survivors. Stick with simpler-to-play classes of rogues, fighters, barbarians, and rangers for the new guys. I'll go handholding cleric of Ilmater or something.

All suggestions or help is appreciated! They should be coming in this coming Sunday or shortly thereafter.

Off-topic Discussion / Bon voyage, my friends!
August 04, 2011, 07:27:44 PM
My friends and fellow storytellers, it is with great respect, humility, joy, grief, and gratitude that I write what is to be my final post.

What an incredible ride it has been! In 2005, back when we were hunting rothes and fearing the drow and a haste potion was a free win in PvP... times have changed! I loved EfU then, and I love it now. The story, the development team, and especially the community have all been a fantastic part of my life since I joined in late high school, November of 2005.

Thank you. Rock on. Keep up the awesome!

Although the small details of the stories may fade slowly from my memory, I will never forget the joy and fellowship of this peculiar little group as we've told our stories of heroism, villainy, and the intricate interplay of interesting characters as they touch and affect one another.

But now, law school and my professional life must begin and the stark reality is that I can never put forward enough time towards EfU in order to play the game with any sort of satisfaction without severely distracting me from where I need to focus my life and energy. Do not mistake this is an insult, for in my mind it simply reminds me of the dedication it takes to make such stories that every player here must make. I applaud you all for such.

There are scores of people that I would like to thank, but my memory would be unable to recall them all. A community thank you to all players must suffice.

As for the DMs, I likewise give a communal thank you. I look through the list and not a single one of you did not play a significant role, as a player or a DM, in magnifying the fun and depth of the stories we told. None of this is possible without your hard work, creating and altering the world, driving plots, and giving us that spark of creativity to incite our own drive to create awesome stories.

However, the one individual I cannot refrain from individual gratitude is Howland. You put up with the bad, promote the positive, and make everything about this game/story better. Day in, day out, year after year. I know you don't like too much complimenting, so I'll refrain for your sake. But seriously, thank you so much for enriching my life with your awesome story and hard work. I wish you all the best, my friend.

But now I have to go. I hope some day to reconnect somehow, or to see a long series of books on a bookshelf by a familiar title and a familiar name! Take care my friends, and I wish you all a fine and joyous story to your own lives as we part.

Fondest farewell,

Brandon W.

Off-topic Discussion / M&B Warband, continued
April 29, 2011, 02:58:34 AM
I was talking with a bunch of folks last night about Mount & Blade:Warband. I just found out that it's actually on sale on Steam right now for $6 US, or 5 Euros. It's a steal.

If you go to the website, //www.taleworlds.com you can download the game and try it out the predecessor to Warband, plain Mount and Blade. They play virtually the same, although it does not have multiplayer and Warband is significantly more in-depth.

And if you want to play around on cRPG mod, send me a PM. It's got a fairly steep learning curve, but I've been enjoying the hell out of it for quite some time now and my cRPG people love to train others. Plus, STRATEGUS is the pinnacle of Warband's potential. It should be starting up again sometime soon, another reason not to wait too long.

Bug Reports / Rogue perk Bonus HP bug
April 27, 2011, 02:59:11 AM
I took the Thug perk prior to a reset on my character, level 8 rogue Thordzan Aetharn. Without enough time to choose the next, I logged out for several hours.

Logging back in, I noticed that I had the appropriate HP bonus. I took both my regular PC feat, Slum Child, and the Engineer level 5 rogue feat, in that order. I then noticed that my HP was now an additional 10, for a sum of 20 points, higher. I immediately rested, restoring it to the appropriate number, HP + 10.

Although minor, I thought to post this in case it causes other, more permanent problems.

Alright, so I've been using mibbit.com for my IRC for almost a year now but I still suck at the internetz.

I'd like to set it up so that I can create a Bookmark and it will automatically connect to the three different channels in which I often linger, #efu, #sons, and #goldenalliance.

If it's possible, I'd also like to have QuakeNet server running as well, joining channel #FallenBrigade (my Mount and Blade:WB group).

Technophiles, any idea about how this can be done?

Suggestions / Main Gate Guard
March 21, 2011, 08:41:21 PM
I'm sure this will fall down into a "make it happen IG" sort of thing, but I'll make an effort to explain why it might simply be a story progression point that's several years overdue. It's also admittedly a rather selfish request, but I've definitely found myself at a unique disadvantage because of various IG/IC factors and it's driving me nuts because I spend an enormous amount of time traveling the opposite direction I'm trying to go just to circumvent a small checkpoint as if there were no FEASIBLE way of getting around it (aside from invisibility, which feels cheesy). I'm sure other characters have had similar issues, hence I bring the issue here.

Why is there a Stygian Infantryman at the Main gate? Why does the (dirt poor, mind you) Stygian Armada care about that wreckage? They've got their territory, the Conclave has theirs, the Docks, goblins, etc. theirs.

The only group that really has any investment at all in protecting everyone and preserving the general peace is the Conclave. Hence, I suggest that the Conclave fill in this more appropriate role.

Better yet, move that odd tribal dude on top of the ziggurat out to the gate and let a more Dominion-appropriate NPC fill in his role. Why they've let a creepy barbarian who speaks in riddles handle dealing with lost and confused ziggurat victims for so long befuddles me.
