I am being watched.

Someone or something has noticed that I have been snooping around. Was last night's messenger a warning, a hint, or an act of random chance? What was it trying to tell me? The Sisters seemed to understand it, but I do not. Who are you? What were you trying to tell me?

      SHADOW SISTER WELL

FOREWORD: I owe this discovery to Zalthar & Karstcleft, for their assistance, funding, and sublime charity; I owe this discovery to Nesilhan bint-Zuthal, for her last minute assistance and confidence in my work to provide the funds to publish it, and to Welly Wormswill, a fellow scholar of Ephia's Well; and lastly to the League of Gold, who were kind enough to patronize a man from another League for his hard work.

Sweeping vistas & hand-wrought stone, chiselled in the icon of a man knelt before a hooded, ambiguous frame; the motif of a Well, and cradled in the heart of that Well, a Chalice and trophy like no other. We call this place "Iistu". In the old tongue, it meant one thing; "Place of Imprisonment." Yet in today's common parlance, we know it as another.

But what if I told you that there was another place like this? Where a Man once saw visions of a gleaming chalice, and was joined by seven hooded disciples who spread the gospel of a Prophet in how the world could be remade? This place is not Ephia's Well, but it is Iistu. We know that Iistu is Prison. That Iistu is that which contains in the Old Tongue.

And beneath us, Ephia's Well once contained it's grim secret, too.
Welcome to Shadow Sister Well.

"The firstborn of a seventh son. He was the one who saw the Truth,
He was the one who showed us the way, and the first of seven disciples
."

This man was Mordecai, and they tell us he was the favored of God in the singular. Not of our Wheel, nor the Sages, but of one cause, and one Lord in the isle of Harrowden. Then I ask the educated among us a question: this man, who is guided by religious visions, and righteous fervor - surrounded by apostles and itinerants who drove him to seek a Chalice... Does it remind you of anyone? Does it make you think of the state of our Well?

What if you were to learn that this Ephia's Well, this Iistu, buried in the broken sphere of the world, burnt to cinders by the Heliograph, had the ruins of Fomorian and Collosi art? What if I told you that like in Ephia's Well, there was a seal for something buried deep within it? Then I would ask you; what is the commonality between us, and them? What if I told you that it had whispered in the ears of men, the way the Well had to the babe [REDACTED] and Enrico?

This poses us with a potent question that calls into matter the very existence of Ephia's Well, the Cinquefoil Rose, and the truth of what is beneath us. For too, our records say He Who Shall Not Be Named was guided by Voices to the Old Words: given visions and power, which one drained our Well dry and severed B'aara's love for thousand-and-some-years. For too, our records say Enrico the Pretender was guided by the Voices to the Old Words: given visions and power, once with forever changed the course of history and led to the Ephia's Well we know today.

Do the statues of the Pilgrim and Chalice predate us? Do they stretch back to the days of the Collosi?
Have they been brought to "Iistu" as a message? A sign of triumph over evil? Or did someone, later, bring these statues here, and stoke the legend of one bringing The Chalice to the site of an ancient and terrible evil?

By the assessment of the author, ARAMATHRYS Al-ALMADEL, there are two prevailing theories:

  • EPHIA'S WELL is one of a number of PRISONS scattered across the Ash Waste, having been designed by the Collosi to restrain an entity beyond our comprehension and understanding, and that the statues of the Pilgrim, Kneeling Giant, and Chalice were some form of LONG TERM COLLOSI DANGER WARNING that "This is a Place of Honor, Do Not Disturb": and that the Cinquefoil Rose and the Sisterhood are predicated on the memory of this thing, to renew the bindings and use the White Spear to remake the Well with it's shackled power,

OR,

  • That Ephia's Well is not the COLLOSI's only former Home, and not a prison: that they have seeded the Myth of the Chalice at the sites of these Prisons and containment facilities, and raised religious men to act as their caretakers and stewards on multiple occasions since their emergence in the Caliphate (yet undated),  "PROPHET MORDECAI", and "PROPHET SALHIN", and the likes of the Grandmaster with the charge of their Quest, and that Ephia's Well is not the only site of prophecy, ...

Leaving the rest of the world with a burning question.

Maribeh 10th, IY 7788. A time where the great Caliph is honoured.

I am no longer destitute. My influence has began to spread.
The performative nature of politics tires me. I was not cut out for showmanship.

But stands must be made. Notoriety must be raised.

There are people who I am beginning to feel partial towards. I am averse to the idea of casual or competitive friendship, but these people grow on me like cysts on my feet. Mae Stern has proven to be a reliable bouncing board for my theories and idle thoughts; Zoe has proven to be a constant companion. Nur & Priore are beginning to feel like natural additions to my coterie, for totally opposite reasons. Nur's kind naivete, and Priore's cynical ruthlessness are two sides of the same kind of my business.

There's so much I need to work on.

The Hound: The Caliph's? The Martyrs? I think it's related to the disruption of the Underworld. Hunting down the myths around [REDACTED] is difficult, but I think I'm beginning to understand what it is. The Afterlife? And living people have been there? Apparently, it existed so far back that the Collosi recall it. I want the power it contains. I will HAVE the power it contains, no matter what it takes.

The Election: I don't think I'm going to win. The Astronomers seem wishy-washy, and the Sisterhood is permanently inscrutable. Argent has too much support. Too much money. He will, inevitably, buy out the Banda Rossa and the hopeless Balladeers, leaving us 2-2 in an ideal world. Sephidra doesn't seem like she even has a chance at this point -- current projections are 15, 20 votes, to 45-some for Argent, likely ten or less for me in the timeline where I fail to hold the Accord ...

The Heliograph: Colmes never responded to my letter. I don't think he's going to bite, but I had been hoping to help the war-effort in some fashion.

The Latchkey: Where to begin? Sisterhood. Astronomers. Orentid?
This is going to be hard. I can't piggyback off someone elses' work.

Harrowden, the Memoir: It's beyond my reach. For now.
I need to increase my fluency and acquire equipment to translate what I need. It's going to be difficult.

To Lieutenant Colmes,
and whom it may concern.

We spoke on this topic with extreme brevity, but for the sake of the People's edification and your own personal use, I have prepared this letter for you. Apologies that it will not cite the appropriate academic sources; I'm too busy for things I'm being paid much more to do.

The Heliograph, as it is understood, is a device that harnesses the light of the Sun: similar in antiquity era to our Shade, likely ranging back to the days of the Collosi or the Caliphal Pra-Rajim era of history; the earliest reports citing its usage in The Dawn Wars: an interregnum-era conflict after the collapse of the Collosi Hyper-State. It's powers are documented (I have verified this firsthandedly) capable of eviscerating an entire island in Sunlight (according to ambiguous reports and legends - some hundreds of years old).

We have reason to believe that the Archonate employed it within the last three-hundred years, by my understanding; and that there was recently some form of conflict or confidential skirmish. By the recency of it's use, I am willing to approximate that it is likely still operational, if lacking in power - therefore requiring logistical support vis a vi fuel shipments of Baublium and Wellwater, et .al, and ideally, accessible for our needs.

Doubtlessly both of us are aware that there is no practical aid that we can be offered by the Banafsi freedom fighters, but ... If you were to make the correct overtures and I coordinated with the Astronomers, we may have an alternative tool available in lieu of the need to use meteors to win our war for us.

There is some consideration of the fact that the Shade is capable of bending light and particles, therefore theoretically capable of being used as a refracting point from which to redirect solar ordinance ... which I shall bother you neither with math nor theory regarding, for I sincerely doubt you would understand or care.

Let's discuss this in person again and call for one of the Apothars to discuss this if you consider it an interesting prosect on the Orcish-Ephian hyperwar to come. You will find me at the service of the Ephian state, as ever.

To the Representative of the Tower,

I have been seeking you out for some time, but have not seen you available.
As of yet, I do not think you know me; but in due time, this will change.

My name is Arymathras al-Almadel. I shelter in the Temple of Izdu, and every morning I like to begin my day with a routine of calisthenics before beginning my first batch of translations. I do not think of myself as a man prone to disputes, but when I have them, I would like to believe I resolve them swiftly and efficiently; and if pressed, that I would rarely lose them.

I would like to be a friend to the Astronomers of the Tower of Q'Tolip. I am quite partial towards Miss Azimi, and frequently collaborate with your Nadiri, Mr. Moretti and company. I am an illusionist of some skill, and a translator of far greater talent and capacity, capable of translating Fomorian, coded Heiroglyphic cyphers, Erugitic, and High Kulkundite Dwarven.

And I am requesting a permanent archaeology license, as the one your fellow Apothar Azimi offered to me expires in a day's time: and if it lapses, I will be in a grave issue with the threat of repugnant little Janissaries seizing the manuscripts I have secured from local ruins. Let us meet to discuss business, the License, and the future of Ephia's Well over tea and biscuits.

WITH DUE SINCERITY,

MARIBEH 6th

Everything is proceeding according to plan.

I have placed myself at the center of a gravitational anomaly. An intermediary between Sisterhood and the Well, the Gold League and the White League; between the Sandstone and the Astronomers. With every passing day, my roots sink slightly deeper into Ephia's Well. I'm still poor; I'm still destitute, and I'm still struggling, but things are beginning to look up for me.

It's hard to tell what the future holds. Qari tells me I should focus on my scholarship. That in due time, I could easily be the voice of the educated within the Well. That the people will come to me, so I will no longer need to grovel and beg for scraps. And to an extent: I agree!

But that's the beautiful thing about me, that my Master used to compliment.
When you give me an inch, I make sure I get to take a League.

I have acquired the journal that will lead me to Henry Morganbilt. That will lead me to the truth of the Eye. To where the missing portraits have vanished to. To where I will build my fortune in Ephia's Well. And when I'm there, not even my INSUFFERABLY SMUG BOSS will be able to tell me that I DON'T get to go to IL MODO! He'll rue the day he stole the seat I was promised by Argent on our expedition!

Maribeh 3rd

I hate it. I hate it. I hate it. I hate it.
And more importantly, I hate HIM! My new Boss is already insufferable.
It was one mispriced license, and every other word out of his mouth was an obnoxious, drawn-out 'mmh' and CONDESCENDING towards me.

I don't even want to be a Scribe. I'm just tired of starving and freezing and starving and not having a bed to sleep in. I need money. Every since the BANDA ROSSA ruined me, I've had NOTHING! NOTHING to my name! My only hope for financial success comes from selling licenses, signing paperwork, and pretending like I care about whatever Legate Gloamingdaith or that SMUG ASS Bashir is talking about.

I don't! Burn in Hellfire!

But for now, I really don't have any choice. I have to just keep working and making money and putting on an expression of indifference. The first good things are starting to happen to me since I found Ephia's Well. I found an assistant! And I don't even hate talking to him! He barely talks. It's a blessing. It's a real blessing, and he's got plenty of things I don't: like friends. And money.

I'm almost in a good mood! I found some fascinating paintings in a digsite, about the fall of the Caliphate, the White Spear and-- Vahd? And someone else, deep beneath the earth, studying old books. Kind of like me, right now: trapped in a musty basement as I'm writing this. I'm going to write to that friend I met. Mr. Lorincreve.

Hope he's interested in working together. I'm tired of being poor.

    To the Esteemed Mr. Lorincreve,

We had spoken some time ago, in the savage & untoward Satrapy of Ephia's Well; while I was confined to the indignity and offense of stocks, for so much as finding fascination in the strange works of our forebears. Not so long after, you joined me in the coffeeshop; and I introduced myself as Arymathras al-Almadel.

Your words, and your proposition, have long since been on the back of my mind: and in return, we have set myself to gathering some resources and men for the purpose of establishing myself more thoroughly in the trade of antiquities. I would like to become a partner of your establishment, shipping relics of Orentid & Caliphal Origin, in exchange for a triangle trade of equipment & funds that will support our future endeavors, ...

The evening I pen this will mark the first time that the Society has broken ground in Ephia's Well, uncovering a relic of some import; from the tomb of a Caliph, filled with the most elegant of murals & paintings my eyes had feasted; and there I found the statue of the Caliph adorned in Gold and gripping the White Spear.

And to begin this, I would like to send you a gift of what it is I have recovered.
An artifact from the era of the Pretender Caliphs -- a gold-enlaid, gem crusted sash, and a fractured Erugitic tablet, that would no doubt appease any rich & fat Ashfolk seeking a new trophy on their mantlepiece.

MAY THE LAMP NEVER DIM,
ARYMATHRAS AL-ALMADEL

PS: My interests remain with the occult & esoteric -- and anything you might provide that would lead me towards Idrisian texts upon the topic, or the tools to translate them, would be of utmost interest.

All my woes in Ephia's Well are owed to a hat. Could there be a more cruel and senseless irony? I came here to acquire antiquities, to investigate the cultural mythos of the Orentese, to find timeless artifacts of dead cultures Formorian and Titan-born. Instead I have been beaten, kidnapped, scammed, and otherwise troubled owed to some "gift" the Banda Rossa offered to me.

But we survive, I suppose; if not because, in spite of some Brooking haberdasherer. I will survive and outgrow their suspicions. I will become a name that is recognized; a scholar of some repute, with an esteemably impressive collection of artifacts which will be paraded through Baz'eeli courtrooms and sit before the thrones of Caliphs. Perhaps in the mean time, I will make friends of the least savage of these foreign faces, and find at least one or two men I can put my trust in.

The Great Work continues, and with it, I will complete the Idrisian manuscript of the Occult.
The Corpus Hermetica will be whole again.

i won't lie, having played a paladin for a large swathe of the chapter i think it's literally fine. people who get pinged by a paladin as evil don't exactly have a horde of CG assassins hunting them down instantly. "intrigue" doesn't come from alignment and your average PC does not care where you are on the G-E spectrum.

and frankly 90% of the people who are evil alignment abstractly don't even feel like they're really evil PCs.
(i think people should be forced to start neutral atp if you're not a paladin, so many people are just randomly evil for no discernible outside reason)

A time when unions of love are formed.

I've never been very close to the Gods.

Back in 99, the Lady-in-Waiting was a matter for Humans. We Small-folk kept our Small-Gods. But the Small Gods died with our Home. In Il Modo, I gave some token praise to the Sages. Vittoria, for a good wind. But I can't say I feel them in my gut, the way we did the Old Kind.

But I feel like I ought to. Who else is going to keep me alive? There's another war on the horizon, and we're going to be the first ones on the lines. Recluta - disposable. I don't want to die. I want to live, and I want to be rich. I want to be respected and loved!

Which of you'll give me that?!
Please, send me a sign.

ONE DINAR!

One Dinar. For spending thousands in potions, and beating my other Recluta half to death: they gave me an extra Dinar in wage. Even Pounder Brothers & Sons Hammering Company paid me better than this, and the boss of the company was a GNOME. And you know how Gnomes are about money. I should've seen this coming, the way that Balestriere acts.

I get why the others don't like her. I don't really get involved in office politics so long as I'm played, but in our line of work, I think you need an amenable relationship with your people or they WILL glass you when you're alone in the woods with them.

But I've met a few people I don't mind. Made a lot of money, so far. Think I must've pulled in a hair under four thousand in dues for myself. Even gave some of it to the company. Banda Rossa's not so bad.
