Akouai! Akouai!

It is, once more, over-

Mari Blacke, High Priestess of Gellema was created after a week or two on the server and figuring out I wanted to do something with religion, taking the paragraph from the Wiki seeing the "glistening temples in Baz'eel" and thinking, well, why not here? How do you go about making an unpalatable and esoteric religion mainstream enough to give it some space to work?

She is responsible for her share of things, even if she was never in an accord and somewhat marginalized at times as a result. It was by her (and Lojir and the current Gellemedes then's) hand that Gellema was placed on the Stele for a time. She styled herself Gellema's high priestess at that point and noone ever challenged her on that.

Mari was truly devoted of the Wheel as a whole, believing each spoke its due and virulently spiteful of heretics and spent some effort on rooting out Pra'raji and even got one or two. Being of the Wheel, of the Well and of the Sabotage, she did enjoy a mess but, largely, wished to seize the heart of Well and inspire it into the Gellemedea. To turn the Well into the eye in the storm of misfortune that swirled around the disc. To make it a shining jewel in Its image. This does perhaps make the circumstances of her death a bit more of a farce for those paying attention to such things.

She was a prolific and dogged conversion hound, probably getting nearly 20 people give or take I would have to count, more if you include some 'soft' conversions. She loved all of them, even when they stabbed her in the back or tried to kill her. Some conversions were five months in the making. Reaching out to the neglected and marginalized PCs gave her rather a lot to work with.

I hope religion grows to be a bigger part of the setting on the player side with these recent changes. I did sort of feel like I was playing a glorified priest npc at times I admit, set off to the side. But we made our own fun and Mari presided over several ritual sacrifices which wherein I had to get creative in dynamically restringing furniture for SFX. This is the effort the Gellemedea brings to the table.

Mari was of course silver tongued and charming as befitting her station. When she was famously kidnapped from her temple by some Banda Rossa during her first run at Legate, she woke up in a closet set to be murdered. Her groundwork for weeks with Kragg gave her the opening though to talk, and by the grace of Gellema was able to dissemble to save her life, leaving a Janissary to later fume, for whatever reason "Why did they let you go?? They kill babies!"

There was also that period of time after Lojir where they wouldn't let Nadiri talk to Mari without an escort.

She was, known to almost noone, one of the most published authors of the Bardic College...

She maintained a temple, inspired by Ianthe, for ages and appointed it rather nicely...

Mari was vain of course. There was ample environmental storytelling for this. And was, I think, the only PC to flat out pay ten thousand gold for a pretty toga rather than have one handed to them by background or circumstance.

While Mari was malign in her way, it was never really in the way people liked to imagine her to be, creating a dissonance she was quick to pounce upon. And she did have a sense of timing and know how to twist the knife.

As for the end, she was always hungry for the Legate seat which led to the sort of Rasputin-esque end I was ultimately expecting, though via blatant judicial murder. She went out with as much dignity as the circumstances allowed, faithful to her Deity, preaching to the last.

I interacted with a lot of folks so I couldn't cover them all, but as ever there are some that stand out.

Khalid- Khalid and Mari were quiet companions since the beginning, as cohorts in the Wheel and the Wheel House to friend to, eventually, the thought of him going to perish on Red Hill left her thoroughly rattled, bringing her to divulge her feelings. Khalid's dedication and incorruptibility was fascinating, even if she did manage eventually to cajole him into politics. Sometimes it did feel like we were bearing the entire religious weight of the Well on our shoulders to rep. A fantastic and in my opinion underrated cleric.

Ianthe- The reason Mari had a temple, blowing into her life at level 4 probably, and started doing the Greek swerve. Proof to me that if someone runs up to me crazy enough and Greek enough you can honestly get me to do anything. Incredible work.

Soliana- After months of working on it getting you into the Gellemedea was real worth it. I loved our dynamic and it was amazing to see her grow. See you between the stars~

Zickery- Lojir and Selsi were both a joy, and man did we get some stuff with Lojir. I appreciate how willing you are to just go for it and 'ball'.

Alejandro- I don't need to tell you that you are incredible at what you do. Your journals and works are top notch. Characterization and feels are all all timer every time with you, Don.

Gers Geiger- Mad wizard and Gellemede who, of course, backstabbed me a few times. Mari did get him cleared of some charges regarding shooting some cops. Mari inspiring him to create the alchemist guild had some wild knock-on affects down the line.

Galen- I appreciated you could never tell if Galen was going to strangle you or kiss you. Unbeatable lurching sociopath energy. Definitely one of Mari's favorites. I thought it was 50/50 you were going to murder me one day as an act of devotion. I'd've let you.

Bernadette- I love your guys Merrychase, even when they are being jerks to me and trying to undermine my cult with competition. Brandy and Meadow are also delights.

Bashir- Bashir is a treasure and I will miss just wandering about or hanging out, gossiping.

Karpie- please stop breaking my heart. At least I saved Lucas Moody with that spider helm so he and Edha got to retire to the burbs. Sorry Gianluca.

Syclya- Though you are new I do love your energy and willingness to engage, unbowed by expectations as only a fresh player can be.

EFU is always I think most rewarding for me when I look at those overlooked or secondary bit characters and prise and engage and get in their heads and this goes even moreso for Clerics. There is someone behind every keyboard and putting yourself out there, being available, making the gesture is almost worth it in the end. I would encourage everyone to always be looking to make that new friend, convert, or enemy. Don't let yourself get silo'd.

If you do miss Mari, though, just look up at the night sky.

she's waiting

Euoi Gellemos!

Correspondence / [A Letter to Legate Guivarch]
October 03, 2023, 03:31:59 PM
Legate Domhnall Guivarch,

I trust you are well despite your trials of late. I reflect we ought to speak of current matters and casual meetings are, certainly, a grand and distant dream when one sits on the Legate's chair. Events, among other things, conspire to keep a distance. Much has transpired and much does and much will continue to transpire beneath my Lady's aegis. It is my request that when you've time, have me sought.

Notices and Bulletins / Anti-Qaim Rhetoric
September 21, 2023, 06:39:37 PM
[On the bellows, and on rare occasion even leafleted in paraphrase, the words of High Priestess Mari Blacke rail against the heretical Pra'raji of Qa'im]

QuoteKnow the clockwork gaze of Pra'raj would sear away life and emotion. In the stead of surrender, submission. Your feelings dictated by ticking, chittering, chattering machines. Every man, woman and child: the status of a cog. Possibility clenched like a vice.

Let us sound our defiance! Embrace ecstasy, hail terror! The vital wash of blood within our heart! Shout anger, cry joy! In the blessed uncertainty of the present, the immanent, we -live-! The ascendant now where all things are possible, great and terrible.

This is Mari Blacke, High Priestess of my Lady Between the Stars. By Her grace am I a guide to those who seek. Though I do not burn, I am a torch for those who would take Her in hand. By the works of the Wheel will we be bolstered in strength and in spirit. By Her wit are we made to see well despite the efforts of the sun to blind.

QuoteAkouai! This is Mari Blacke, High Priestess of our Lady Between the Stars, Gellema. By our imprecations is Her eye cast balefully upon those who would ally with Qa'im and already whispers spread of an Archonate beset. Order unravels. Discord ascends.

By the grace of the Wheel shall the works of heretics be undone. By Her gaze. The fly in the ointment. The sand in the gears. The tick out of step with the click-click-click of metronome heart of the cursed Sun. Her attention, Her scourge. Sabotage.

In defiance we embrace ecstasy! Hail terror! That vital thrum in our hearts! Fury and joy and love and hatred, all those things the machine would deny you in mindless cog-service to its factory-god. We rebuke the shrill, tooth-felt whine of Zojhir's works!

Live, drink and dream. Embrace the immanent now. May Her smile be courted! Her gaze directed! Euoi Gellemos! Euoi!

Suggestions / Gellema on Stele Affecting Drugs
September 19, 2023, 01:37:05 PM
Placing for consideration here that having Gellema on the Stele having an affect on drug-type item use would be interesting and on theme.

Increased duration and maybe effects, alongside increased DC for resisting addiction.

An on-brand way to reflect the influence.

Correspondence / [A Letter to Bashir]
September 18, 2023, 11:15:00 PM
Bashir,

Having two active Legates rather than just the one likely leaves you rather a bit more busied than previous so a letter seemed the most adroit way to reach out in matters.

The first matter to which I inquire is for the transcript discussed previously, if it is available.

As to the second, and perhaps more pleasant, question, I did wish to inquire after if you have yet visited Frostport. While the novelty of ice on the peaks of Kulkund is keenly felt, it does pale in comparison to that to be found about that Northern port. Though at times I imagine quiet days seem an impossibility, perhaps one can be found in time, yes?

Correspondence / [A Letter to Hephaestus of Banafsi (DM)]
September 18, 2023, 01:36:53 PM
Hail Hephaestus, Lord-in-Exile! ChairĂ³maste!

I bring my tidings and well-wishes and exhort in your name the smile of my Lady and Her pitiless gaze cast upon the Archonate where even now disorder and misrule foster, making straight your way.

Hail reveler! Hail lord! The Gellemedea opens its doors to you and offers blessings. The Wheel turns and smiles upon those who would stand athwart the efforts of Qa'im to steal the warmth of the beating heart and in its place cold and click-ticking steel. To hew down Bel-Ishun and pave it in copper and bronze and stranger metals. To replace surrender with submission. To turn one and all into mindless cogs in service beneath the withering solar hatred of their factory-god.

Know that She is the fly in the ointment, the sand in the gears, rust and ruin to those who would blaspheme and Her gaze would be turned sharply to your enemies if you would have it. What prayers that would be offered up between the stars, She would hear. The Wheel might turn, and grind your enemies beneath it.

I would invite you to speak on such topics, if you would have it. The Gellemedea is not without great means or generosity to those who would herald the Wheel to return to Banafsi alongside a champion-king restored, garlanded in fortune and revel. If misfortune is to churn as a storm in the coming days, by Her blessing might one stand in the eye of it.

We rejoice with your arrival, for surely this stands as omen of a resplendent immanent to be forged.

Euoi Gellemos!

My erstwhile temple vestal,

As the dust settles with the election passed it occurs to me that we ought to speak. Elossi's Lounge, perhaps, or your coffee house? Do let me know.

Most Esteemed Servant of the Sultan- Majordomo Siursum avak Res,

I wish to extend my personal greetings to you. I am Mari Blacke, High Priestess of the Gellemedea and steward of her Hall of Star and Revel within Ephia's Well. I must confess you had become to me, of late, a figure of mystery and interest for reasons I would come to learn were the result of forgery and, perhaps, misrepresentation.

With the dust of the election settling, it was my wish we might come to speak, should you find the notion amenable. On the future of the Well and the Wheel and how such might be fostered in the coming nights. If your duties preclude this, or correspondence is  deemed more prudent it is well understood regardless.

May the blessings of the Wheel ever circle and alight,
High Priestess Mari Blacke

Scribe Bashir,

I wished to inquire after a register of those who marched and survived to return, if such a thing is possible. As a matter to avoid misunderstandings of borrowed valor. I would, of course, offer a charity for this.

-Mari Blacke
High Priestess of My Lady Between the Stars

P.S.- Our mutual contact yet lives, having not marched themselves. They confide that commissions are yet open, and another work is underway.

[At the behest of the Legate Marcellus, a letter is sent to each of the city-states' ambassadors inquiring after Baublium trade]

QuoteEsteemed Ambassador Zafirah Tariq of Kha'esh.

I write to you on behalf of Legate Marcellus Seanus to inquire after a matter of trade in this upcoming conflict with the encroaching host.

Building upon the pledge of your Vizier's fine battle-magi we wish to intrique upon your venerable Emir in an exchange of Baublium. Ephia's Well has an interest in the mineral for our war efforts and would entertain offers of trade in exchange for such. We would gladly open negotiations in such matters if your great city is amenable. We will await the fine judgement of Emir Jaiyan.

QuoteEsteemed Ambassador Rezifa Rejavi of Qadira

I write to you on behalf of Legate Marcellus Seanus to inquire after a matter of trade in this upcoming conflict with the encroaching host.

Building upon the pledge of your Maharaja's finest ships we wish to intrique upon your venerable city in an exchange of Baublium. Ephia's Well has an interest in the mineral for our war efforts and would entertain offers of trade in exchange for such. We would gladly open negotiations in such matters if your great port is amenable. We will await the fine judgement of the Maharaja.

Legate Marcellus

I do realize, as the dust settles, that the positions of magistrate are likely vacated with the death of Zaniah. One of her magistrates at least- Hari- has not been seen in some time, and the other- Domnhall- is away for a week or so yet.

The suite of options from amongst those not running and qualified may be thin, perhaps, but I would offer my services in this position for a time if you require it.

Zaniah-

I imagine you've quite a bit on your plate with the refugees- and I reflect we of the Wheel still await some meeting or assembly to discuss the matter- but more saliently to me at the moment is the matter of- if Sol Auk's bellows are to be understood properly- the purchase and trading of the priestess Mirit like some manner of draft animal.

Are we to be Kha'esh and embrace exile and slavery for the charge of being vexatious? While it is perhaps satisfying to indulge in pique, it is not always wise to.

Correspondence / [A Letter to Isabella]
June 12, 2023, 01:54:00 PM
[Copies of a letter are sent to Qadira, Kha'esh, Banafsi and Frostport in an attempt to reach Isabella by missive without knowing precisely where she might be in the wake of recent events.]

Isabella-

It seems you've rather a tangle and I'm curious to hear what came to pass. On the face of things such accusations seem... unexpected to have settled upon you.

I reflect being exiled by the woman you put in the seat is something of a sting, but I imagine things are rather a bit more complicated than that. I suppose I understand the lack of faith in the courts considering matters of late within them. But do write. Did the offer from Zaniah make it to Mirit ere the drama saw you away?

Correspondence / [A Letter to Acolyte Ianthe]

Ianthe,

These are nights I feel that my skein has been spooled out and my thread well frayed but, for now, it is unsevered.

By His wit are we made to see well in the dark and much has been in motion against our work, and much still is. The shapes of these conspiracies grow clearer to my eyes and we should speak of it.

Have a care, in the meanwhile. You are dear to me. And should my own thread be cut, do as you must.

Burn the Letter,

Isabella,

Your understudy, the supposed check to the excesses and impunity of Sol Auk has taken to stand by and allow her magistrate and Sol Auk to exile a voiced citizen without arrest or trial for being irritating.

I suppose Mirit did warn you. Perhaps you can intrigue upon her, but as first acts of 'wisdom' go, well it is about what I expected.

[a missive circulated internally for the leadership of the League of Gold]

In the near term we ought to discuss what options and resources are at the disposal of our campaign- material and otherwise- to ensure our collective success in our venture. Seek me.

Correspondence / [A Letter to Sol Auk]
May 25, 2023, 01:31:14 PM
Legate Sol Auk,

I am given to understand the march against the Djinn proceeded, and not without deaths and perhaps worse.

We have only their word that the survivors are untouched, but in an abundance of caution it may be prudent to consider the fitness of those candidates who have attended this march and the risk they might pose. One can deceive in the short term certainly, and with them all now returned and flushed to corners of the Well without quarantine, a timely accounting and assessment is not possible.  And one might imagine the risk inherent to one possibly tainted going about the well collecting signatures, collecting names.

Mark, too, my concern that doubtless many of them carried their petitions, a roll of the Well, with them into whatever djinn pit they did battle and what mischief might have- or might yet- come of this.

I commend their successes- for I mark Amelie as a worthy servant of the Wheel- and I will mark the absence left by Lojir- but sentimentality is a secondary concern to matters of the safety of the Well. What measures are within your power here, I do not fully know. Barring those involved from conducting and participating in campaigns for this cycle- at least- giving time for a full accounting and full assessment- seems prudent at this juncture.

-Mari Blacke, High Priestess of Gellema.

Sergeant Rennick Colmes,

I write to ask you for you and the Jannisaries to consider supporting my bid for the nomination of the League of Gold over those other hopefuls.

Mark well my service as Magistrate and my efforts in aiding the investigation to root out the heretical. Mark, too, that the other that vies for the Gold- Kythaela- made great sport of seeing how many crimes she might commit when such matters were of a head and is not shy of clashing violently with your numbers. Mark, too, her willingness to grant an unvoiced heretic the honor of a death at the hands of the Lions- something reserved for the voiced- merely for her amusement as it matched her granted title- "The Lion"

Perhaps you yet find her palatable over my Lady, but know as much I am Hers, I am, too, the Well's. Should you grant this further consideration, seek me, surely. I can be found.

Correspondence / A Missive to Sol Auk
April 28, 2023, 01:18:03 AM
A missive finds its way to be dictated to Sol Auk on his retreat, perhaps-

Legate Sol Auk,

In occurs to me that our Lady has granted us a curious sort of leverage, in Her wisdom. When you return I would speak of it.

Mari Blacke, High Priestess of our Lady Between the Stars
