Bug Reports / Synthetic Bait Doesn't Work
June 11, 2009, 04:26:38 PM
It tells me it's not suitable for use as bait when I select it with the rod power. Same for the high class bait. I was using the Expensive Rod. It reported nothing in my inventory was useable as bait.

Suggestions / More Places to set fires
June 07, 2009, 10:33:35 AM
A lot of places are tagged as "no fires", when there's no logical reason. The Webbed Woods tunnels, when there's a camp IN them is a prime example. I suggest that any area a ranger or druid can rest in should be one where a fire can be set. That way you're still reliant on seeking shelter is the weather's bad, unless you have druid or ranger levels, but it's not so hard for casters to rest and have spells ready when leaving a QA. If you're playing a mage, some of the further out quests can be a bugger for actually having spells for the way back.

Experimenting with quick methods for adding some fantasy/antique feel to a screeny. I came up with a way that takes a couple of minutes, requires no artistic talent, and makes a screenshot of the map look a lot more like a had drawn chart.

You'll need GIMP for this, which is a free image editor you can get for Windows here:
http://gimp-win.sourceforge.net/

If you want a hand doing this, ask me to walk you through the menus for GIMP if I'm on IRC or bored IG.

Method:[LIST=1]
  • Enlarge map IG to biggest.
  • Take screenshot.
  • Open screenshot in GIMP, cut out map.
  • Change map to black and white. (colours->desaturate)
  • Paste it into a new layer (Edit->paste as->new layer) over a parchment pic. You can get a ton by just typing "parchment" into Google Image Search. For the lazy cartographer, I used this one.
  • Set transparency of the new layer to 70% (layers window), colourize it to a yellow. (Colours->Colourize)
  • Add words, in black, transparency of layer 70-80%.
  • Save the lot as a .jpeg. (save as)
  • Optional: cover the map pins with drawn Xs or something, add a North Arrow off another image search to cover over the "player location arrow".

I'd just like to remind everyone that we're still going, and that membership in another faction won't disqualify you from this. DrD's PC just joined, and he's heading up a faction.

Semli might not be on so much these days, at least in European time zones, but I've been trying to take the lead in getting us new members, questions to answer, things to investigate and so on. We could use more people though.

Membership here does come with access to a free resting bunk in the back of the library, but the biggest IC advantage is access to our forums, which have a ton of information on all sorts of areas, plots and artefacts you'd not easily be able to find out alone. Anyone with an interest in the many mysteries of the server should consider rolling up a PC for the faction or having one of their PCs join.

We don't ask much out of members, so it won't derail any of your plots, but if you put a bit of time into the faction, you'll get a lot out of it in knowledge, contacts and exploration. Join Team Brains. You won't regret it.

Quote from: "Semli"William Bell University is a group of scholars led by the surprisingly long-lived Asdon Garlin that have professed a desire to better the community through the pursuit of knowledge.

Who is Applicable: The great part is, almost everybody! Anyone who wants to participate in speculation about mysterious events, wants to help out the community, or just general scholarly endeavors is more than welcome to join in! We need Indiana Jones style archaeologists just as much as traditional bookworms.

Suggestions / Shrine of Umberlee Donation Bowl
June 04, 2009, 08:22:58 AM
So you can properly donate at the shrine in the Lower Docks before travelling, if your PC is inclined. It's good RP, better than dropping it on the floor and hoping nobody swipes it.

Seriously. I went to rent a guildhouse today, in the name of the University, or so I thought as it's the only faction Ahmed's in and I got the rent option. I rented the Guildhouse. It now says "'s guildhouse". Yeah. This is rather silly, but I think I have an explanation. Way back, Ahmed was in the Fleet of the First Bolt Banner Faction. I remember that after doing Wild Orcs I got that same "blank faction" effect a couple of times when it used to give faction influence points. I don't mind losing the guildhouse and getting my money and stuff there refunded as I'm not in a banner faction really, and I was considering starting a Guild for the Weave Appreciation Association Drem founded anyway.

Suggestions / More Paladin Loot
June 03, 2009, 09:26:48 AM
Considering that Rangers get a couple of useful +1 and +2 level spellslot items, it would be cool to see a couple like that for Paladins, outside of DM loot. They are the only casting class without +slot gear available.

Suggestions / More Polymorph shapes
May 30, 2009, 04:04:38 PM
Because it would be cool, considering how much wildshape got buffed and tweaked.
Specificaly, I'd like to see a Polymorph shape with Sneak Attack, and Polymorph: Chicken, as well as a few playerrace shapes. Up the battle use AND RP potential.

Bug Reports / Renting rooms

I was informed when I rented one that extra days could be added before it expired, but I can't find the dialogue option to do so.

General Discussion / Invis Purge Overkill?
May 28, 2009, 12:16:06 PM
A certain wilds area is littered with invisbility purge glyphs with no way around, totally hosing any attempts to explore or escape the area by invisibility. The odd True Seeing mob, fair enough, but the sheer number of undetectable, undisarmable invis killer traps seems like overkill.

Suggestions / More MEAT! Mmm.
May 26, 2009, 10:43:08 AM
Can we have Raw Animal Meat as a 100% drop on all Boars and Deer please? There are a few cook PCs about and being able to hunt them for ingredients would be cool. Raw Chicken or "bird meat" on Seagulls, Parrots etc if possible too?

General Discussion / The Coral Reef Quest
May 26, 2009, 08:52:57 AM
I just want thank all DMs responsible for creating something fantastically entertaining, complex and challenging, that manages to give the feel of a DM quest without a DM supervising it. Without spoiling anything, I'd like to give a big thumbs up to:
-Scripted persuade checks
-Cool uses of locked doors
-Multiple optional areas and different routes to go.
-A huge quest area with really varied environment and terrain.

General Discussion / Favourite Quest Spice
May 19, 2009, 12:02:09 PM
In response to this reminder by Howland, I thought I'd post my favourite examples of spiced quests, and ask what other players have had dropped on them and thought "hey, that's cool!"

My favourite was likely the Castle Vrazdn run where Mort:
-Stuck trapped barricades ahead of us before we'd even got to the QA (Saida blew them up).

-Deployed lots more Pyromancers, including in the Towers, leading to a fireballing right back.

-Placed a "statue" that turned out to be a stoneskinned Goblin that ran when we killed all the rest.

-put four Stargazer Warrior NPCs inside the usually empty holding cells, and assigned them to four of our team as temporary henchmen.

It was cool because in addition to the Enemy getting upgrades we got dropped a bunch of allies to command, too, showing off the command ally tool. This is something that I'd love to see DMs use more, be it by spicing a Wild Orcs run with a lost patrol of the Order in the end part and spawning more orcs coming FROM the Mill direction, to some non-dominated sailors on harpies.

On right the other end of the Epic Scale, one of my PCs once had Infested Farmlands spiced after one of his 3 man team permaed. The other guy was a gnome. The DM threw two more waves of wolves at us but posessed BARON MATTERHEIM to turn up and save the day for gnomes everywhere! :D No gigantic ogre challenge, no epic reward, but really cool.

Suggestions / Better Halfling-only slings
May 18, 2009, 08:29:49 PM
Since slings are the favoured racial weapons of halflings but no PC uses them as a main weapon on account of how weak they are, how about some Halfling Warslings sold by Stargazers?

Say:
Halfling Warsling
A reinforced, heavy war-sling used by the Stargazers.
//do not UMD this, it is effectively a racial proficiency

Sling

Mighty +1,
Keen

Only Useable By: Halfling

This puts it up there with darts or shortbows for a good hin weapon.
