Just because they no longer allow players to play pets, doesn't necessarily mean they were entirely retconned out of the story.

I think Ziya refers to how the dialogs appear to refer to ongoing events when Neph hasn't had pets in some time.

Maybe refer to the past usage of pets as a shameful practice.

Yes but some NPC retainers still say the  Square use devils as well, that is not realy a bug but  if you want to say some not-upgraded history on the rings ,and pets as far as i know "when i started playe there were already gone soo i may be wrong" were a realy important part of house NEphzar history for long time, like, they NOW stopped use them but is part of their family history,.
