I was picking coconuts off of a coconut palm earlier, when I realized that it had turned off my stealth. A jaguar came up and killed me in three hits before I could even get animal empathy off. This isn't a problem with those quest placeables like the brown bush or the grass in the outer wall forest. Would it be possible to fix the conversations to allow the stealthy picking from plants?
Herbalism has killed a couple characters of mine in the same way. Damn jungle panthers.
While I would love this, I think the general idea is that it is not a quiet practice. Picking a coconut, for example, would require either climbing the tree or shaking it violently until coconuts drop to the ground.
Some things certainly could be quieter or stealthier actions, like picking foxberries or similar, but it is probably easier to just leave them all as stealth breakers, rather than pick and chose which will and which will not break stealth.
The fact that you may have to bring somebody to fight monsters for you so that you can pick up reagents, seems to me a positive thing.

This would indeed be possible sir.
Well, I agree kotenku.. except almost every mage dabbling in alchemy basically can go invis, run out to their favorite herbing spot and go nuts with little to no risk. Stealthers (rangers/druids) don't really have that option.
But, meh. Honestly the system is fine. Just means taking some precautions, since the possibility of stealthed mobs is always a threat.
I think if one can quietly walk in front of an ogre and remain undetected, one can make a cutting, take a berry, even silently climb a coconut palm cut a coconut and silently drop to the ground undetected. Besides, what about a druid who wants to avoid killing jungle cats? stealth is the way to go, and if you can't stealth while collecting herbs then you have to chose in between protecting the wildlife or gathering herbs.
Druids can empathy those jungle cats for a reason.
Yes, there will be times when there are multiples lying in wait. These are the times that, when alone you either fight or flee. If you really want to play the tree hugging vegan druid though, just pretend you're subduing the cats... Relocate them afterwards. I've done this before in other situations and it actually led to some nice roleplay.
I always just take the precaution of getting invis pots for picking plants, I do so regularly on my ranger who has stealth. Just stealth around but use invis to pick the plants. Or get group and kill whatever lurks. I've died once out in the wilds on that guy and it's not through those plants just a stupid decision to fight a shargaas disciple.
Chuck Norris doesn't pcik coconuts. The tree shakes in fear of Chuck Norris, dropping it's coconuts to appease him. Be like Chuck LTS.
EfUA is a dangerous place, sort of like the underdark. It's untamed, and personally, I like the nasty spawns. You don't want it civilized, now do you?
I'd be happy if I didn't have to choose between exploring and dying.
You don't have to choose. You can do them both.
...wait a minute, that's not scottyB!
Anyway. I would too, like the option to explore alone while stealth or invisible to gather plants and herbs without the need to find people to help, wich is pretty dificult in my experience. A character with a good stealth should be able to do so with minimun risk IMO.
I had moderate stealth on my last character and went almost everywhere alone. I even stopped to pick quite a few herbs. You just need to learn where is safe and where is dangerous and take appropriate precautions. Some herbs, as you are finding, simply are not safe to pick. Maybe find a way to get their seeds and plant them where it is safe.
Perhaps to please both sides of this argument you could have to make a ms roll to stay in stealth, if that is possable, to represent that you have gathered the said plant but without making so much noise as to aleart any near by beasts.
I don't think anyone wants any spawns toned down in this thread. I think the belief is quite simply that you should be able to pick leaves, berries, fruits, and roots as quietly and inconspicuously as you can approach the plant.
I concur.
I believe plants should have a death save applied, picking them will kill you.
Pinefish: If anything, that would represent a pickpocket (sleight of hand) roll. And it would require even more work for the DMs than simply disabling the stealth breaking of the dialogue.
That's why people invented agriculture, people, not to go humpy bumpy berry picking in jungle infested areas.
Too often are nature people confused with 'i should be invisible in the wild and animals should love me', imo. If you're alone in the wilds, tough on you. If you want to gather plants alone to keep recipies secret, that's a double edge deal.
Bring civilization forth, or bring bodyguards. Maybe there's even safe places where you can grow and harvest the plants, but maybe you'll have to fight for the said territory...
Anyway, stealthed animals can be spotted easily, and they move slow, so there are no big deal. Just scan the area before you start plant gathering.
As for invisible mages going everywhere in comparison, that was true on EfU, but in EfUA you want to think twice because meeting creepers or even myst ogres can be deadly.
Just me passing by.
Same was true in the underdark and invisibility. There were several random spawns that you just prayed you didn't run across while invisible. At least ogres tend to stick to certain areas. >.>
there should be plants that when you pick them spawn ogres, with random berries on the ground in place of monster spawns, so that people looking for herbs can conveniently take them from the ground while those that want the reward of combat can use said plants
oh wait nvm it's the way it is for a reason
To be honest if you want to not get ambushed then check before you harvest and if stealthed enemies are your problem get spot gear or invest points in either spot of listen. Most plants can be found in relatively low risk areas. As for the comment about things like mist ogres and vines only spawning in certain places, that doesn't always stop them ending up elsewhere. I have died in a place where assasin vines don't spawn because they have been lured there.
I only mentioned ogres. Assassin vines, from my experience, can spawn anywhere.
But, none the less, as stated numerous times and in numerous ways, the original suggestion really isn't needed.
If you get high enough AE, then no animals will attack you. 100 ae or so should suffice. '
But really, a druid of mine never had trouble with rats/bats in the ud.
