Title: DM Jail: failed to validate skill points
Post by: Letsplayforfun on July 30, 2009, 04:23:47 PM
Hey, i created a PC today (half orc, Rudish Kraged on the Lets_play_for_fun account), and got ported straight away in a DM area. There was an error message:
DM jail: failed to validate skill points.

Concerning skill points: i checked and they are all spend.

Dunno what happened.

(edit: i tried a second similar PC, same deal).

I made a second PC with 8 instead of 6 in INT, and it works fine. The PC with 8 INT has as many skill points (4) as the PC with 6 INT, which probably shouldn't happen. Is that due to 6INT PCs not allowed or something?

I'll assume you made a 6 int fighter.

According to the base rule, fighters get 2 skills points/level + their INT modifier. 6 INT means -2 modifier, so no skill points at all.

However, NWN defaults to characters always getting a minimum of 1 skill point per level, even if their INT denies them that.

So that's basically an exception to the rule that's not included in the script.

Even though this really should get fixed because it does sound like a bug, I have no desire to have 6 int PCs be playable.  >_>

Man when you're only twice as smart as a plant, dog or insect(3 int) you have to worry

My cacti are smart. They are the only ones to survive my gentle green-touch.

I was not aware that all characters, regardless of penalties, would have a minimum of 1 skill point. This won't be too hard to fix, but it's not a pressing issue to me.

On that note, it shouldn't be hard at all for another DM to find out where the maximum possible skill points value is calculated for this check and make it so that it's never less than 1.

Alternatively, we can just put a sign in the DM jail saying you shouldn't have an INT less than 8. Turn this bug into a feature, maybe.

I thought the DM team disallowed minmaxing in the first place.

6 int certainly sounds like minmaxing to me.
