Title: Game mechanics and AI
Post by: Cerberus on November 17, 2009, 03:25:21 PM
Just once I would love to see a DM take advantage of the the players the way the players take advantage of the game mechanics and AI. People talk all big and bad about charging and not luring the AI NPC's and all that. Just once I'd like to see the DM's say...

QuoteLook at those PC's standing right in front of the mouth of the trog cave buffing to the gills and chatting up a storm. Hmm... Maybe the Trogs might have actually seen and heard all this (YA THINK!?). [pause game] Move all the front trogs to the first water run. By the time the players get to this point thier the buffs are better than half over and they strip out of their armor to go for an easy swim past two trogs.. "OH NO! there are ten trogs now!" Then take the rest of the trogs (including the king) and for those that say they'd charge the AI, put them on the other side of the trap room. In case there are any STUPID enough to charge, make sure to have at least four trogs in the water under the trap room waiting for the solo's that will fall in...

Gee... Did I just make a TPK?

While you may think something like this would be fun for players, I assure you, few find it so amusing or original.

Duh!

The original post is meant to be facitious and sarcastic. I get tired of posts that insinuate how I should play my PC. If I dont buff before a quest players send me tells asking why. Then there are those saying I should charge into groups of NPC's because if I dont I'm taking advantage of the AI. wtf! Just play the game and have fun is my point here. Quit trying to make something out of one issue while making excuses for another.

It's a game, have fun. :p

DM spicing quests includes that.

Ignore tells of people telling you why you should've buffed at this specific point in a quest, or tell them nicely to mind their own business, or to do so ICly.

I've never had such tells on my part. Sounds strange to me.

On other hand, I believe it's been said many times in the past, that normal players don't even have to worry about the AI or issues of exploiting really. If you take dmg and go to cover, it's normal. If the mobs happen to charge at you then, so be it.

The whole issue is that it's clear when some people send this one guy with bow to shoot mobs and then run back, luring them in on purpose - or anything of similar idea. Just play the situation as you can, and dont' sweat it. Those who on purpose attempt to easily go around the situation, it's clear and it'll be seen.

No one is telling anyone to charge up to enemies, or telling you how to play.

Edit: If a person is telling you how to play, it's only your own issue if you let it get to you. It's not hard to say "Listen, I like to do things my way. Please don't tell me how to play my own character."

Back in my day of playing a lot during DM primetime, that kind of stuff happened a lot.

Especially back in the early days of the Underdark  when it was like 2 DM's per 1 player :D

In the mornings, it's still pretty much 2 DMs to each player.
