Title: Funny computer hardware story
Post by: IxTheSpeedy on December 02, 2009, 11:52:33 PM
So my friends, thought i'd share my Monday afternoon hardware adventure with you all.  I am mostly a MAC guy but for NWN I play on a PC that I have.  An old dual Opteron box that was, until recently, pretty rock solid.  On Monday I booted her up and promptly started bluescreening about every 5 minutes.  I have decided I have a hardware issue, a shortof some sort, or overheating maybe so I decided to take her apart and see what I could see.  Single out components, etc...

In my efforts to do so I decided to pull out an old dual core Athlon machine from the closet, maybe use it as an interim machine...  I took a hard drive out of my current machine and slapped it in, booted that one up.  POP!  the power supply blew as soon as I booted it up (that was a first, never had that happen)....  Not good.  I decided to take the parts out of that one and put them in another case I had laying around.  Booted it up and no graphics output.  Nothing.  So, now, what do I have?  THREE pc's completely disassembled across my living room floor.  I'm now busy as hell and haven't had a chance to put any of them back togethor?

Ever had so many computer parts on your floor that you trip over them?  That's my living room right now...

Just had to share.  I can post a picture of the insanity if anybody wants to feel better about how not cluttered their apartment is...

Until I managed to start selling their parts off (ka-ching!) I had you beat with FOUR disassembled PCs on my BEDROOM floor. I had to hop over the hollow shell of a tower to reach my bed.

After a couple months with eBay I am down to the equivalent of two PCs' worth of parts, though.

I've got about ten motherboards, 20 harddrives, 10 CPUs, some cases, a few PSUs,  and a few video cards laying around, all still in their packages.

I also have five other computers excluding the ones I own, and two laptops.

Partswise I win, even if I own none of them :)

Best I've had is a few graphics cards lying about which I promptly used in a mood board for uni. Reusing things for the win!

ScottyB, that's not a bad idea, selling the parts on eBay.  Maybe I should sell them all in one load and just be done with it.  Most of them are pretty old, I won't get much for them.  I still haven't reassembled things into a working machine.  I actually might just bite the bullet and buy an HP...  Ahhhh   Gasp...

I haven't bought a pre-fab computer in over ten years...  Just don't have time to mess with them anymore.
