Title: Balance Tobar's Prices
Post by: Egon the Monkey on September 28, 2008, 12:22:29 AM
I recently saw someone had sold a bonus feat: Dodge sword to Tobar, presumably for his same pathetic 12 gp as usual. Since the buying price has been nerfed down to nothing, can we at least have the selling price lowered to a maximum the same way (maybe max price 200GP), so that when this happens, other PCs can buy the things?

I understand the idea was probably to keep the merchants from being a useful income from selling drops, but it's got rather ridiculous. All Tobar does is draw good things [especially scrolls] out of circulation for a pittance and sell them at unreasonable prices nobody pays. It's tempting to sell scrolls for immediate cash, but frustrating to casters to see them there at stupid prices.

From a world builder's perspective, this is excellent. It certainly isn't going to change.

If you have problems with his price try I dont know becoming a merchant yourself and sell stuff for more to pcs!

Being a merchant won't stop people to sell things to NPCs even if they only get a crust of stale bread for it.
I liked how it was at first when NPCs (presumably) wouldn't buy ~any~ of your things whatsoever. That really made the PC to PC trade flourish.
Also liked how they would most often prefer a trade instead accepting gold coins since they weren't all that useful, either!

Indeed.

Weaken Tobar, don't empower him. FIGHT for economic fairness!

And don't sell him cool shit, people.

Yeah, Cute has it bang on the point there. Unless you're a pure merchant, some stuff isn't worth your time to find a buyer for if you want that 12 gp NOW.
Putting a max price on would still keep people from making a ton selling to Tobar, but would make "What gibbering lunatic sold THAT" items buyable at a reasonable price.

Other that a few very basic things he stocks (bedrolls, herbs, basic weapons), he's a one-way NPC, a shop nobody buys from. And that's just weird.

If people don't want to sell their awesome loot for a decent price, why should the DMs bother changing it?

Some people that I lovingly like to call "New players" might simply not know better.
Others might do it by accident, I know at least ~my~ fingers are twitchy enough to warrant that kind of thing to happen at least once in a while .. :(

Though this forementioned dodge sword is not my doing, I freely admit that I have sold various high valued items to Tobar for 12gp a pop.  Scrolls, armors, weapons, potions, etc..  but such was done because of one simple fact -- my PC is not a merchant. Nor will she ever be a merchant. It quite simply does not make sense, or fit, the build of the PC.

So that being said, please do not lower or stop Tobar from buying things in general.   Instead, those that cringe at Tobar holding that scroll of haste, fireball, or what not ... place your own advertisements that you are willing to buy products.  I would gladly bring my non-merchant self to another vendor if they offered me more... but I'm not going to go out of my way to find that one special buyer. ;)
