Title: Lower Zen Archery BAB prereq
Post by: Kotenku on April 06, 2010, 08:07:24 PM
As it is, Zen Archery requires a Base attack bonus of 3, meaning that the first opportunity for a pure-classed, secondary AB progression character to take the feat, is at level 6. Considering how useless the feat is for 90% of characters, I believe that lowering the prerequisite to BAB 1, or BAB 0, would let the feat be taken at levels 3 or 1, respectively. The change proposed would let this could-be-neat feat  be more viable, and therefore more widely used.

Naturally I've got little idea as to how balanced this change would be, with respect to clerics and monks; it would however, make wisdom-based rogues and bards competent at an earlier stage in their progression, which is the whole intent.

I honestly don't see a problem with this. I'll look into it tonight, but cannot guarantee anything. This may well require a client side override to make it work...

Great, incoming horde of incredible will save rogues smashing the server with absurd bow sneak attacks from first level, no less. Another glaring imbalance to put on the shelf.

Rogues that will be terribly gimped at all of their other class abilities for what... a gain of +2-3 Will save? Hardly inbalanced.

The lack of consideration of how the usual weakness of a rogue in his/her lack of will is going to be more or less nullified in making them have unyielding minds is pretty concerning.

I'm sure once this is in place everyone will realize this almost immediately. Hopefully I'm not on the wrong end of a relentless ranged assault against a rogue with a jedi like will save, I guess.

I'm thinking of archer druids here. And i think it might be a good idea.

Perhaps more like slinging druids, since druids cannot typically use bows.

Archer Clerics and Paladins. Theres even an Elven god of Archery, so it works.

I don't get what the problem with taking this feat at level 6 is?

(Needs clientside override)

I'm not particularly for or against this change. But to answer your question nine I think the issue is that there are a lot of feats that are fairly useful that can only be obtained once a certain bab/caster level is achieved. Up to level nine a non human is going to have only four feats. A zen archer cleric or druid would be unable to take the craft wand or empower feat until level 9.

Personally I think Zen Archery has as much merit as a level 6 feat as craft wand or any of the other selections. But I can see how some people would prefer to use their level 1 feat for zen archery, level 3 for weapon focus and level 6 for a crafting or combat feat.

I got to go with nagaga googoo's fine thought on that one. I would be very surprised to see a pure rogue taking zen archery but there is a nice yet not overpowering benefit for clerics and other support classes to receive this feat more early on.
