Title: Charm Spells

They make hostile targets neutral to the caster, while continuing to attack teammates. Possibly be able to fix this?

That's how they're supposed to work, but in my experience that's not how they work. Whenever I'm charmed, my character starts drinking random potions, using valuable loot, pulling out inferior weapons, and charging head-first into the enemy (once, I wound up drinking a stoneskin, elemental shield and true seeing potion, then charged in head-first after putting my scythe away, AoO's killed them harpies, and I was finally able to see our invisible wizards who were shouting at each other to put a clarity on me before they threw a confusion at me).

VERY ANNOYING!

I'd prefer charm to just cause someone to be stunned until they're attacked by one of the folks who charmed them.

That sounds more like the confusion spell than anything else. Which is not a charm spell.

Confusion has you wandering around and attacking whoever is nearest (preferable, as allied players normally have the sense to put the enemy between you and them), charm has an unpredictable AI take over your character and attack the nearest hostile after 'preparing' for the fight (as in, using all your potions, and beware charmed wizards, they can and will throw their spells and use their scrolls at groups of enemies while disregarding nearby allies, so watch out for fireballs and color spray spam).

I meant the sorc/wiz spells charm person charm monster dominate person ect. The harpies and other NPCs charm is different. I am under the impression the sorc/wiz charms apply the daze effect or something similar when cast upon anything.

All charming is the same, if you charm a PC on this server, or an NPC, they will charge at you and attack. That is, unless it has been changed for this server.

On the + side, casting charm spells on merchants applies a hefty bonus to your appraise skill when dealing with them (I have yet to try this, contact a DM before using this method of getting stuff cheap from merchants, as it may end violently).

Well- I cast charm person on a quest NPC and it turned blue "neutral" to me and continued hacking down my party. Making the spell rather useless in that sense. According to nwn-wiki by default these spells apply the daze effect on PCs, which I would think is a better overall effect.

I assume both AE and charm will have same faults. They both should make the npc neutral, and on AE controllable. It's most likely the issue of non-party system, but not sure what can be done to it.

Hence why I suggest making it apply a daze/stun effect instead?

I always wondered how they worked. I only ever used these vs PCs or to influence DM posessed NPCs. Do they lower Persuade/Bluff DCs at all? Could Charm be set to somehow spam a "stay where you are command" on an NPC? If not, daze makes sense as it will put them out of the way, and a DM-posessed NPC can be made to respond appropriately.
Alternatively, this could be seen as perfectly sensible. You have charmed the creature into accepting that you, personally are really its best buddy, not all your armed friends  too.

The charm used by harpies is as the shifter harpy form song from standard nwn. The spell works different. The creature not being hostile to you means no attacks of oppertunity as you cast or move near it. Which for a level 1 spelll is not bad and fits the spell description. I can think of a number of monsters that would b-line for a caster if he came close to the fighting

Yes but the lvl 4 charm monster and 5 dominate person is a rather poor spell then.

Dominate person grants control of an npc as a henchman. Charm monster is not the only level 4  spell thats utility cannot compare to many equal or lower level spells. But just like them has a unique extremely situational function

Mechanically talking, charm is worthless IMO. However, it is a good RP spell.

Wrong. You can cast Charm Person from invisibility without breaking it. It disables a person's ability to fight or cast or even drink potions.

It's extremely useful, just doesn't last very long.
