Title: Stack those potions
Post by: Udenbur on May 20, 2010, 08:01:20 PM
We all know it and we all hate it. Two potions of the same kind that do not stack with each other, because one is brewed and the other comes from a NPC. Is it possible to implement some tool [such as a crafting table or a cauldron] that allows you to insert potion X, have it consumed in the process and exchanged for potion Y of the same type?

This has been discussed many times. If I recall, it was always found out that it's favorable to have different potions and from different places. They all have their place, and that was also part of the deal.

I thought it was just too much of a hassle to go through the whole module and make all the changes.

I remember something along the lines of them asking for potions that drop from corpses or are found as loot that don't stack with other loot to be reported. That was about a year or so ago, maybe their stance has changed since then, or maybe I'm thinking of another server...

Anyway, please, let the potions stack if possible. I like the OP's solution, if it's possible to do.

I swear, some suggestions can be used to measure the passing of time!

I hope this adds anything: Not sure if it's a bug or if it's intended, but the 'Beast Men Tree Skin Drink' (or something like this), which is supposed to be a themed loot, but works just as a potion of bark-skin, has recently merged with mundane bark-skin potions I had. So... I guess if even the ones intentionally given different names stack, why not have the mundanes stack too? Or at least have ONLY the mundanes stack with one another, and the themed ones not to.

I'm 99% sure that potion behavior is completely unintended and I doubt we could intentionally replicate it without a helluvalotta work.

I prefer them not stacking, tbh.

At least players have to browse their inventory to actually use some potions. It's not like PCs have belts of 100 potions criss-crossed all over them.

Just like 'you can't change armor during a fight', you probably shouldn't be able to 'put your bag down, open the box, pull out the new stack of potion, drink' all of that in one round while your opponenet barily gets one AoO.

Besides, having stacks of 10 potions (could be more too) quicksloted kinda increases the 'let's drink contest' in most situations.

If only part of the equipement could be damaged (fireball breaking your vials), that'd be fun ;)

Don't think it would be fun actually.

If Star Trek were NWN then Worf would be the only one with all his potions ready.

I know someone who actually does this, but with alcohol when he goes drinking.

Apparently, Trenada does though (//%22http://img232.imageshack.us/img232/2579/trenadafight.jpg%22):

I'm game for anything that actually makes spellcasters more magical than fighters with a potion belt.

That would be more wiz/sorc only (to prevent Bard/ftr abuse) impossible to UMD dispel gear, like the Abjurer's Wand on the Puzzler Rings quest. Dispel evens the scores because a L3 dispel can be expected half of bulls/blur/other CL 5 stuff. I'd say make wiz/sorc only Dispel Magic scrolls a common drop on par with blur potions, and some drops of Spell Breach scrolls. Remember you can't fire 2 scrolls or wands a round hasted, but can drink 2 pots.

All the flavor potions are nice, and it's fine if they don't stack.

But what be nice if two identical-looking potions, with the same caster level, effect and name and picture, would always stack for certain. As of now one is very likely to end up with multiple stacks of identical lesser restoration, and other potions.
