Title: Ways to beat Spell Resistance
Post by: DollarPhil on July 27, 2010, 12:29:09 PM
With the new changes to Dispel, Spell Resistance just got even better, and it's not like it wasn't awesome already. It's available through some semi-rare items and Bardsong to a small degree, which is enough to block wands often. Furthermore, a large number of bosses and monster types have SR.

Although Dispels now lower SR, the problem is they now have to beat the SR check first, which is far from easy if you're trying to lower their SR with a wand, or facing a Cleric or apprace.  As it is, the only spells that'll get through SR now are Lesser Spell breach, Tentacles, Light, and technically Summons too. You used to at least be able to dispel past it. I think it would be an improvement if Dispels stopped checking SR, which would also make Bard and Spells Domain Lesser Dispels useful again. They are now blocked by Blur as they count as L1 spells that check SR, so the immunity works.

Finally, I'd suggest a perk to allow offensive casters to combat SR without having to spend a feat for a fairly small bonus to the check.

Any single-target hostile spell you cast will lower the target's SR by one for 3 turns if it hits. This effect is cumulative.

I think (greater) spell penetration is more useful now than ever.

But an extra perk to help out against Spell Resistance is also such a good idea. I'm thinking specifically of this new bard song perk that has Spell Resistance. Bard Song can't be dispelled, or Spell Breached. The more options available to breaking spell resistance, the better.

Can the lowering SR of dispell and actuall dispell effects be separated so that the first doesn't need to beat the SR? This way, even if the dispell fails, you've lowered the enemies SR.

To be perfectly honest, I don't quite agree that this is a problem.

I am rather enjoying the change to PvP strategy that this means.

Note, this effects DM possessed monsters as much as it effects players. :)

That said, Lesser Spell Breach isn't that difficult a spell to get ahold of, a wizards with GSF abjuration are going to be rightly feared.

Unfortunately, LSB has no effect on the bard perk. However, it kind of makes sense that it would? Maybe that would be a reasonable counter.
