Title: Achievements
Post by: lovethesuit on September 01, 2010, 02:44:41 PM
How about some Achievements (or Cheevos) for EfU:A? That seems to be the trend of games these days. Things like 'First Quest Completed', 'Subdue 10 PCs', and 'Kill an LTS character'. There would be no mechanical benefit, but these could represent little milestones in your time on EfU:A, or mark amazing goals like 'Reach Character Level 12' or 'Raise a Dead PC with your own spell'.

These would be player-specific, based on one's CD Key and IP address rather than player name or character. Since it is a new system too, veteran players would not instantly have a one-up on new players, since they would have to earn achievements as well.

The ultimate achievement would be to 'Make Snoteye Smile', which I think we can all agree is basically 'Win EfU' because it's so hard.

While they might provide something fun generally in MMO's or other bigger multiplayer games, I don't see any benefit of them here.

It would require awfully lot of time and effort to make it work, and then it'd at worst cases encourage someone to seek certain not so reasonable actions for achievements.

I believe every characters and your past experiences are achievements in itself, and there is no need for any list of things done in game for a line of text.

I would very much enjoy this kind of system but only if it had "I cyb0red with Daz-NPC" achievement.

It sounds like a bit of a silly idea, but it could be fun. I think that Paha Poika is really overthinking it.

Making Snoteye smile isn't hard. It just involves dozens of PC's dieing horribly.

All Achievements should be earned and done IG.

I remember Sternhund having an Achievements list for EFU:A a while back.

I am a strong proponent of achievement-like systems in traditional video games, it is one of the few things that can make me play a game longer than I would otherwise.

However, EfU, or even most story-driven PWs I know of (not to say all), is not a traditional video game. Achievements are inherently competition driven and that doesn't suit the style of play we expect to see from our players, not against the system and certainly not against other players. Any "harmless" achievement will be boring and more a testatement to total hours played than any feat performed. I would do this in a heartbeat -- it's not even that difficult -- if not for this conflict. This is likewise why Sternhund's thread was removed.

ShadowCharlatan is right. This would place inherently OOC goals/agendas on all of the PCs played. Every character is different and it's impossible to categorize RP goals with an all-encompassing list of achievements. I don't think something like this has a place in a roleplay-centric server like ours.

I think LTS is joking, or to our English friends, "taking the piss."

Maybe people IG should simply appreciate in game achievements rather then this lame OOC achievement thing. If you want recognition do awesome stuff IG enough said.

I'd like this if it's tied to GSID, so that you're disinclined to change your accounts and I can identify you people when I come back from my breaks. Or even just week to week.

Sternhund already set this up. Try search before suggesting noob.

Quote from: ShadowCharlatan;197218I seem to recall one of the DMs trying to do something a little like this a while ago. I'm not sure what the response was like, or even where the thread is now. But it was basically a list of achievements, and the points they were worth... You had to screenshot each one, and the person with the most points at the end would get a DM quest with some chosen friends or something.

Yeah.  I remember this.  Not sure what ever became of it.

It was a rather long duration and I'm guessing that no one stayed alive long enough to really turn in much of anything. I know I gave up after doing a ton of it, even the Underdark stuff, and then dying and just not wanting to try and screenshot and track it all again. <_<

There is always the Howland challenge, although I believe that's impossible these days due to the sheer number of low level quests (unless you want to die to try them all :D )

What i'd like to see are quest-related achivements. Achivements for roleplaying are frankly, a terrible idea, but a quest is a mechanical challenge wich could have cool achivements, such as:

Additionally, other achivements for similar mechanical challenges could be:

None of these involve roleplaying, and would be awsome to have.
