Title: Fuck.
Post by: Disco on October 02, 2010, 09:49:27 PM
Yes I know I have made a post like this in the past, but I will do so agien. Lately I have seen alot of PC´s use the word "Fuck" And it for some odd reason annoys me.
It for some odd reason offendes me more that it would do IRL. As well as being a borring uncreative word. It in my honest opinion do not fit the setting of the server, and I honestly miss then days when it was frowned upon using ig.. I suguest people think about making more clever curses..

Anyway just my five cent, Discuss.

I prefer, not to use this word in general. trading it for feck or somesuch. It does seem to be too modern slang for the setting.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fuck

QuoteThe Oxford English Dictionary (//%22http://www.escapefromunderdark.com/wiki/Oxford_English_Dictionary%22) states that the ultimate etymology is uncertain, but that the word is "probably cognate" with a number of native Germanic (//%22http://www.escapefromunderdark.com/wiki/Germanic_languages%22) words with meanings involving striking, rubbing, and having sex.[2] (//%22http://www.escapefromunderdark.com/forums/#cite_note-oed-1%22)
Flen flyys and freris

The usually accepted first known occurrence is in code (//%22http://www.escapefromunderdark.com/wiki/Code_(cryptography)%22) in a poem in a mixture of Latin (//%22http://www.escapefromunderdark.com/wiki/Latin%22) and English composed some time before 1500. The poem, which satirizes the Carmelite (//%22http://www.escapefromunderdark.com/wiki/Carmelite%22) friars of Cambridge, England (//%22http://www.escapefromunderdark.com/wiki/Cambridge,_England%22), takes its title, "Flen flyys (//%22http://www.escapefromunderdark.com/wiki/Flen_flyys%22)", from the first words of its opening line, Flen, flyys, and freris (= "Fleas (//%22http://www.escapefromunderdark.com/wiki/Flea%22), flies (//%22http://www.escapefromunderdark.com/wiki/Flies%22), and friars (//%22http://www.escapefromunderdark.com/wiki/Friars%22)"). The line that contains fuck reads Non sunt in coeli, quia gxddbov xxkxzt pg ifmk. Removing the substitution cipher (//%22http://www.escapefromunderdark.com/wiki/Substitution_cipher%22) (here, replacing each letter by the next letter in alphabetical order, as the English alphabet was then) on the phrase "gxddbov xxkxzt pg ifmk" yields non sunt in coeli, quia fvccant vvivys of heli, which translated means, "They are not in heaven because they fuck wives of Ely (//%22http://www.escapefromunderdark.com/wiki/Ely,_Cambridgeshire%22)".[3] (//%22http://www.escapefromunderdark.com/forums/#cite_note-2%22) The phrase was coded likely because it accused some Church personnel of misbehaving; it is uncertain to what extent the word fuck was considered acceptable at the time. (The stem of fvccant is an English word used as Latin: English medieval Latin (//%22http://www.escapefromunderdark.com/wiki/Medieval_Latin%22) has many examples of writers using English words when they did not know the Latin word: "workmannus" is an example.) (In the Middle English (//%22http://www.escapefromunderdark.com/wiki/Middle_English%22) of this poem, the term, wife (//%22http://www.escapefromunderdark.com/wiki/Wife%22) still was used generically for woman (//%22http://www.escapefromunderdark.com/wiki/Woman%22).)

It's older then you Farrukin' think, mother farruker.

The gist was, then: curtail it. Use it sparingly. Using it every third word is retarded, annoying, and makes me feel like I'm playing with a 13 year old.

Why the fuck do people want to get rid of the word fuck?

really  WTF? This right here is stupid and makes the F word loose value.

Though in all seriousness dropping the f Bomb on every occasion simply diminishes the value of the word. Its alright to do when something extreme happens and its "What the Fuck!" or talking in private and  being pissed off.

So please do not drop f bombs constantly.

You know, if someone is unoriginal with their swearing ingame that just means they're playing a character who's unoriginal in the way they swear. It happens to be something some people do, use the same word repeatedly, and I've heard far worse ingame than "fuck" from NPCs, so I don't see where it's a problem.

FYI there have been numerous threads since, all with DM input, and the basic stance is thus;

'Shit' and 'Fuck' are acceptable words, but spamming them is indeed something we consider poor taste.

Feck is probably my least favorite word used on EfU.

"Me" is my least favorite word used on EfU, as in "Me like to smash things." Seriously, nobody talks like that, not even among the mentally challenged.

I smash, therefore I am.

I will point out that the Incredible Hulk, psion of the lowbrained brute, referred to himself in the third person by his identifier. That is, Hulk Smash.

Buy the all new apple iSmash now for only $19.99! It screens out all words you find annoying and our bills sent to you are larger than phone books!

Ahem... But, seriously. I laugh a bit whenever someone uses the word 'Farruk,' and I frown a bit whenever someone says 'fuck.' Now, I'm not offended by it, I've heard far worse and I don't think many people, if anyone on these forums is truly offended by it. Nor will we be corrupting some poor child's soul by saying it ourselves, as honestly, they hear far worse in public schools. Farruk is preferable to me, though, it's just more creative.

As far as it being a modern word, though... Yes, it's actually a rather ancient word, but it's still the most commonly used among all such words these days. Regardless of which bit of information you post up from wikipedia, people will always think of it as a modern word, due to how much it is used in real life.

It's just annoying, in my opinion. I've yet to see anyone use it truly sparingly (once a day at most, in stressful situations), and usually the word dots their sentences if they choose to have their character use it.

I say that it should not be restricted in any way, however if your character has a problem with swearing IG handle it IG. My pc has, on multiple times told others to watch their language and to behave themselves.

IC problems should be dealt with IC, OOC problems should be dealt with OOC.
