Title: Option to Disable Attacks of Opportunity
Post by: Nihm on October 23, 2010, 03:16:21 PM
I realize this probably isn't even possible.  But if it is, people should have these disabled when invisible, when entering stealth mode, or perhaps by choice with a chat command.

There are too many instances where the engine forces a pc to take one when their pc would never want to attack and this has to be a major contributor to pc deaths.

Probably not possible, but I do love when I walk by something and randomly attack it breaking my invisible and get ganked up.

Ha ha. Yes. I have been punched before to provoke an attack of opportunity and break my invisibility.

I do not think this is possible. You've just got to keep your finger itchy and try to always be moving.

People have said that equipping a ranged weapon will stop you from making AoOs. Obvious problem is all the good wizard/sorc/spellcaster loot aren't ranged weapons. Something the DMs could look into, maybe when creating new loot?

If you use the W,A,S,D Keys to move rather then the mouse, this very rarely happens.

Using Q and E to strafe will not cause you to provoke attacks of opportunity, ever. Equipping a ranged weapon will also similarly prevent you from making attacks of opportunity (except once, somehow, I got an attack of opportunity on some archer when I had my bow out, it has only happened once in like 8 years of me playing this game). Keeping on the move also helps in avoiding making those pesky AoE's, and using WASD helps prevent them further.

There is no technical fix for this, but there are workarounds as described above.

I'm surprised by how many wizards don't carry crossbows anymore.

Using a ranged weapons will just reduce the instance of attacking from invisibility, but not remove it. Sometimes, your avatar decides to retaliate automatically once attacked.

Yep, AoE's are eliminated, but auto-retaliation is not.

This is mostly because of spell slot daggers and such. So Wizards walk around dual-wielding, showing off their ninja look.

I often have my PCs carry a sling and no ammo, purely to have a weapon I can't retaliate with. On a related note, there's a Bilby crossbow with unlimited ammo and 10% of original weight that rocks for mages. I'd like to suggest lightweight mage crossbows or mage bows with decent stats, so it's not daggers or totally useless quarterstaves so much.

The trick is to equip a ranged weapon, without any ammo that fits the slot. You will auto retaliate, but it won't break stealth because you perform no hostile action.

That is how i avoid it.

However, you can't be in stealth mode and heal
