Title: Of Recent Lag
Post by: Howlando on November 09, 2010, 03:55:52 PM
As of v1051, some major initial work has gone into trying to reduce lag.

Things to keep an eye on -

- Since a decent number of areas/NPCs have been removed, please let us know if anything is not as it should be

- Continue to let us know about incidents of bad lag, particularly lag spikes (when lots of people are disconnected). If you happen to notice anything happening immediately before this, that would also be helpful to report. For example - using any kind of complicated system, fighting certain kinds of NPCs, etc.

- I've dropped more "trash hole" placeables around the mod, it might be helpful if you could try to keep things tidy a bit and pick up any dropped items. As an example, I considered removing Orc Teeth as a potential drop from orcs, but then realized that might make alchemists rather unhappy

- Whenever you see a NPC stuck in combat animation, or bobbing up and down, that is basically a bad sign. If you can think of examples where the NPC AI is getting tied up doing weird things, or complicated things, please report it.

In the docks after the Mist Raider incursion (most recent one) I saw the on of the Dog Fighter NPC's running by the Sending tower in the Docks. He seemed to have gotten stuck, by the barrow wights camp, and kept trying to walk thru a fence. I thought it was possessed by a DM at first, and part of some plotline or another, but now, in hindsight, perhaps it was moved during the battle, and trying to get back to it's spot, using faulty pathing?  Not sure if it causes lag,but was definitely odd behavior.

Please don't remove orc teeth, but making ordinary Nightrisers not drop Skeleton Knuckles would be very beneficial IMO. They really lag up Longest Night as an extreme example, not to mention that Evil PCs who'd be using a lot of Knuckles can't *do* Longest Night. Knuckles are a quite powerful reagent as far as I'm aware, but the supply exceeds demand hugely. Make them drop only off Riser Guards instead IMO.

QuoteEvil PCs who'd be using a lot of Knuckles can't *do*

This is true, might as well remove them from the quest if it causes lag.

Lately the majority of my lag has been from my side not the servers - so at least for US West, I'd assume things are really good lag-wise.

How about the boss on said quest just drops a box full of them, and the box has a description saying "No, this monster did not have a box of knuckles on him, this box is a representation of you spending time going around to all the corpses and harvesting said knuckles, and this box exists solely to help reduce lag."

Post by: Egon the Monkey on November 10, 2010, 09:50:16 AM
The point is more that a quest that specifically blocks Evil/necromantic players probably isn't worth dropping a ton of necromantic reagents on since most parties will have nobody who will be using them as major summoning/alchemy reagents.

How about adding a trash-hole to said quest like on trogs? If people aren't totally lazy and care for server performance they might just take the knuckles, when they check the corpses anyway, and drop them in the trash after.

This way some people are still able to collect the knuckles and others can take care that the remains don't lag up the server.

I had some wird 1sec lag spikes about 1houer from now.

Yes. Completely awful lag, resulting in my PC being unresponsive for 30 seconds and dying before he literally knew what hit him, and despite another player claiming he saw me heal up successfully.

From about 1pm PST til 2:20ish PST(2130-2230gmt?), lag was so bad, it became unplayble. Opening a chest, or trying to look at a drop took well over a minute, and combat would freeze, then 30 or seconds later, you would be 1/2 dead, and mobs infront of you dead, with no animations.  This was while doing the Missing Children quest in the docks. Upon exiting, I kept warping all over the map, finally gave up trying to navigate and logged. We did see a "error zero " message come up, on our way out, other then that, the entire session was laggy, but only saw the "zero" message once and got worse as we progressed(the lag), ending in the warping around the map.

I've started to get disconnects alot more now, often when big things happen with alot of people and so on. I had this a while ago, it was gone and now returned. Upon trying to log back in it says my CD code's still in use and I have to wait 5 min.

I don't care enough about server performance to spend all the extra time needed to clean up my inventory for something like that.

Tonight was pretty good, except our party got spikes during the gnoll boss fight.  Screen froze for about 20 seconds.  Unfroze to a loading screen.

Lag spikes at coral.. it would lag then I would crash it was lagging so bad. I spawned on a building and got owned by archers.. when I loggeb back in.. rediculous to be honest lol, But our excellent dms were at the sence and made things ship shape.

Just now there was some massive delay that lasted for about a few minutes.(?) It seems that it was server wide, as other players mentioned it also. No specific script used at the time.

The lag was utterly terrible last night. Trying to go to Shipwreck beach via the beach was about impossible. I didn't know my pC could teleport 10 game feet at a time. Even restarting the game didn't help too much. It did get better... but wow.

It was lagging when doing the Gnoll quest last night. I would target a Gnoll and then it would teleport away from me and then my char would run and it would then teleport back too me. Also i would see no animation just me standing there and then the next thing i know i am hurt and the enemy is dead.

Something since the last reset has made the lag particularly brutal. Long lapses and then all of a sudden the server would catch up and luckily I'd be surrounded by dead enemies! I've died to these stutters before though, but usually after that it's fine for awhile, but last night there was like 3-4 stutters in one evening and lots of teleporting around.

On the up side the lag seemed to cause me to deliver an odd amount of critical hits on a recent orc quest raid. :) But made for a teleporty gaming experience. Least I lived-barely.

Another big push was done to reduce lag (including, I believe, disabling the system that lets players dynamically plant gardens and such). Let us know if you notice improvements.

Does that destroy existing gardens? Or simply remove the means to harvest seeds?

Horrid lag at the moment of writing this post, and there is only 10 people logged on. No DM on, so I assume spice isn't the case.

Keep making posts about when especially large spikes occur or you notice a great frequency of lag (or any for that matter). Please add what your character was doing at the time or just before. If you were doing a quest, if something triggered at that specific time, etc. If it's too spoilerish for your character, just send me a PM with it. Also be alert for error messages.

Example:

Quote01:20 GMT +1

Talir on efu_talir playing Cyril Rayne.

Noticed a lagspike a few secounds after using the unique property on a book to read its contents. The book was called Bulgina Greaselip's Secrets to Goblin Fertility.

Otherwise, has there been any noticeable improvements?

This might be totally off, but I seem to recall that way back when the server was still pretty new everyone was instructed to keep their mini-maps closed as much as possible since keeping them open increased lag in some way. Is this still/was this ever true? Could it help, now?

6:30 p.m. EST, Major Major Major lag spike.

Around 1 am GMT+2. During lag one of the group (can't remember who exactly) reported that he has a whole bunch of monsters (drow, nightrisers etc. lots of them) in his party list.

We were "the desert group" near the Veil.

It was Rimmeke's character... She reported ooc: basically getting a whole series of NPCs, svirfneblin, nightrisers... to the right of screen joining her party (joining parties mechanically, of course, doesnt happen on EfU)... Strange... Happened during the 45 second lag spike.

Sorry about the lag.. 13 players in the one area fighting stuff.

Karrin Connell casted on Gregor: Dex, Strength, Endurance, Flame Weapon, Magic Weapon, Keen Weapon, Greater Magic Weapon, Improved invisibility, see Invisibility, Iron Guts, protection from Elements, And was about to cast extended haste but she logged.

Jan. 13th 2011  about 9:00 pm CST

Where:  Starwood

I was wandering the woods when attacked by Haguur eater of men, an Orc Warrior, Orc Beserker, 2 wolfs and a jungle cat.  (I had been invis, but Haguur saw me)

The lag spike hit so hard that both I and the 'monsters' were warping around the screen.

Should definitely consider whether or not the Gibberlings are influencing lag or not. I notice that whenever the server is extremely laggy (which is incredibly often, it seems) there are also literally ten billion gibberlings in the ruins.
Title:

Feb.12th 8:45PM CST server up for 17 hours.  Docks sending took almost a minute just to get to the "continue" button.  Ended up just closing it and not caring about the 5 gold.

Scripted conversation in the Wastrel to rest also to extremely long.

Would not risk questing in this lag.

Still a lot of lag in game daily. Some parts of it have improved in general but there are still a lot of things happening server side due to it. Triggers are not being fired, traps being set off due to incorrectly reported player locations, conversations being delayed by three seconds or more, hostile spawns jumping around or being overly inactive in battle or teleporting to people.

The things I've noticed that cause a major problem are -

- Persistent quest areas built by DMs. Whenever someone is running something special it's horrible across the server.

- Player deaths anywhere in the module cause an instant 1-2 second freeze on the server.

- Many quests lag the entire server until it's reset. (Orcs 1, Orcs 2, Sinister Enclave, Brood Hive)

- Too many wandering / patrolling NPCs. Spawns fighting each other in the wilds.

Turn off the nwnx profiler if it's used? <_<

Maybe the factions are a problem? I'm sure anyone tweaking this knows but the silent shouts from monsters cause a lot of lag and if the factions are not efficient they shout more / don't abort them. Do we really need mist ogres, orcs, wolves, lizards, bandits, cats, flayers, and stargazers beating the shit out of each other when no one can typically even see the battle from across the area?

Remove monster spawns and loot bags when players leave an area(after a duration).

Adjust spawn points to more numerous smaller ones rather than massive groups (Orcs2, broohive)

Things were so smooth no so long ago,a couple of months before this topic IIRC, what happened? :(

- Player deaths anywhere in the module cause an instant 1-2 second freeze on the server. ---Obligatory moments of silence for the fallen???

On a more serious note-last night, I noticed the transitions not firing, warping about the map both for my pc and monsters, as well as conversation lag of up to three seconds.  this was from about 8pm PST to 10 pm PST
