Title: The Bandits
Post by: GoldenArrow on January 01, 2011, 01:13:10 PM
Hi.

Today, I was part of a group of three level 5's, passing between the Gobsquat, and the Ziggurat. We ran onto a Bandit Veteran, and an archer. Engaged thinking it was going to be another walk in a park - we're two scouts, and a wizard.

The Wizard got facepwned, the two Scouts got beat down by a Veteran doing 15 damage a swing (I got critted for 36!), and the party wiped.

We were PWNED by only two bandits, in a well-traveled area.

Am I the only one who thinks that the spawns in that area should be toned down, or was this just a random streak of bad rolls and terrible luck? It seems a little extreme that you can locally run into a spawn capable of almost effortlessly wiping a small handful of level 5's.

Is it absolutely necessary that we need to be traveling with a buffed up pair of fighters, just to survive a map away from the Ziggurat?

Sounds like you were unlucky with rolls, spawns are random and veterans are not to be messed with. You can easily avoid the spawns by taking another route/invisibility potion.

To be honest I agree with it being rather severe - Having such dangerous spawns even that close to the main area only promotes hugging the ziggurat until you're mechanically powerful. There's a point in that having dangerous spawns promotes social interaction in that you have to travel in groups to get by, but I think it's a tad excessive when that applies even to the areas directly adjacent to the main hub.

I actually like it the way it is. Far too few PC bandits to keep people properly scared of the unregulated, unpatrolled narrow alleys.

As soon as you see the word 'Veteran', or 'Elite', or 'High', on EfU, that's your cue to be afraid, be very afraid!

Well, yes, but if they're going to be that powerful shouldn't they be a faction? Can I join the Veteran Bandit faction?

Is there some unspoken guild of bandits and thieves with a massive underground training complex which produces veteran bandits that can kill two relatively well equipped scouts and a sorcerer with ease every few days?

WHERE DO THEY COME FROM?

PRELUDE PLZ.

They are tough and experienced bandits, they don't look very well equipped but it makes sense a bandit who survives fro any decent length of time learns how to fight.

They get lots of DM experience from killing sarcastic newbie adventurers.

The wilds has malar beasts, elder werewolfs and much more sitting around for low levels. A bandit veteran doesnt appear too often in the gobsquat area. And if you walk certain routes you wont come across them at all. Useually you have to go out of your way to find them, so i see no problem in them. Avoid the routes and places they spawn, and you will be fine. More often than not you see them before they see you.

Come out into the wilds. You'll see groups of 8-10 bandits rather frequently, with three or so of them being the veterans.

But yes, if unsure it's best to always avoid.

Wait until you see an Abyssal Slag wondering the ruins from some failed alchemist...

Made the mistake of attacking a lone Veteran Bandit once, seeking to rob the robber. I was lvl 7 Barb. He took me down in about 30 seconds. As I bled out, I thought to myself, probably should of raged..or drank a few of the potions I was hoarding..both might of been best.

Just cause it bears repeating.

I love spawns like this. Makes the world dangerous, even very close to home. Gives that "you think you're safe here...but really, you're NOT" feeling that many have posted on not having since the move from the underdark.

Random PWN. It rocks.
