Title: Stealth change: Dark Corners
Post by: Egon the Monkey on January 08, 2011, 11:19:40 PM
Now, I'm going to start by saying I hate the implementation of stealth in NWN as it's possible to stealth 6 inches away from someone's face and not see them if you get your skills high enough. On the other hand, if you're in an area long enough and it's reasonably lit, people can get lucky, fast at spotting.

I've seen mods where there were area triggers for "cover" which gave you an AC bonus when you were, for example, near some barrels. This gave me the idea that a similar script could be used to add additional stealth bonuses to particular areas. For example you get your Rogue levels in H/MS bonuses if you're in a certain small section of the ruins with a lot of junk and rubble placed about. Much like the Safe Rest Area, you get a message "you lurk in the dark corner".

This would encourage more tasteful and interesting use of stealth rather than "buff up and stay behind them in a wide open space". It would mean you'd be inclined to worry about and check for people spying on you from areas with cover, rather than in front of your nose. It would encourage rogues to be sneaky urban PCs.

Predators don't need barrels or ruins filled with junk.

Funny. You don't stake out someone in the centre of a wide open space though. Read though it again, this is a suggestion that would be a buff to stealth rogues in urban areas for spying purposes.

Predators in the wild can and do use grass, bushes, trees and anything else that's available to stalk their prey.  I like the idea, personally.  Can we add rooftop travel too?  :D  Too much?  Hehehe.

I have always hated stealthing in open lit areas. RIGHT INFRONT OF ME! Ugh I hate NWN stealth.

Law Proposition: Stealthing in any of the Duke's lands is now reason to suspect high treason and a prompt beheading of such individuals will be highly reccomended.

NWN stealth is actually very good, and takes into account a comprehensive amount of realistic modifiers. This change is definitely unneeded.

I do agree that certain areas should give a stealth bonus yeah. Like the gobsquat should have a general stealth bonus to it.

Lots of areas give stealth bonuses and penalties depending on terrain. For example when I made the Docks I gave +2 Hide/MS flat bonus to represent the ease of travel in shady back alleys and the like. You can't see them on your character sheet however.

The truth is, if you move in a more realistic fashion as if you're sneaking rather than strutting directly across an open area to stand directly behind the person you're following you will have a far better chance of not being detected.

I was trying to consider how to word this. But yes. What Capricious said.
