Title: Roleplaying Poison.
Post by: Leprechaun Magic on November 16, 2008, 09:19:35 PM
How do you guys like to roleplay poison? A burning sensation, a churning of the stomach, an itchy feeling around the area the poison was injected?

Right now, I seldom see being poisoned as being roleplayed, really. Most people are just annoyed that their pretty red health bar has gone green, and don't say anything about it.

i think it would be dependant on which stat the poison is affecting for example if it were strength i would put *feels weak* and if i got poisoned intelligence style i would go *is a dumbass*

Mostly my PCs swear and rant about poisoning. Sometimes they shuffle off and throw up between combats.

This is how I usually roleplay different types of poison:

STR-drain: Weakness, muscle cramping, fatigue, extreme lethargy.
DEX-drain: Uncontrollable twitching, partial seizures, trembling.
CON-drain: Shortness of breath, stomach cramps, vomiting.
INT-drain: Extreme, debilitating headache, mental confusion, forgetfulness.
WIS-drain: Delirium, hallucinations, delusions of grandeur.
CHA-drain: Foul-smelling odors, putrescent wounds (necrosis of the directly-affected area), inability to speak coherently.

But mostly I just ignore poisons and go on crushing quests as though nothing had happened! BBN! *

* For purists, this may be interpreted as adrenaline discharges during combat, that propel your character to do heroic feats, even when badly poisoned.

With the frequency of poison on quests, it can be extremely annoying and tiresome roleplaying the same condition each time you're hit by an orc arrow. Of course, it's always nice to see, yet much of its effects are seen mechanically already.

Incidentally, Kiaring's little guide above is really neat.

When I'm poisoned, I dry hump e-girls. Its the best way to roleplay it.

It's also neat to try to RP disease properly.

Diseased by mummies != Pneumonia.  It equals mummy rot.

What if the mummies sneeze on you, Jayde? And they live in a cold tomb.

What then, huh? WHAT THEN?

I usually place the back of my hand to my forehead, hold the other hand out at arm's length, and exclaim, "Oh, woe is me - I'm punctured by primitive picks of... *cough*...*gag*... p-p-poison!!  Oh, the pain!  Oh, the pain!"  And then slowly collapse to the ground, hoping Will and Robot find me soon... preferably, before the next commercial.
