Title: Music for the Music God
Post by: Nuclear Catastrophe on June 03, 2011, 06:24:57 PM
Hello folks.

I would like some recommendations, ideally with download links, with a view to overriding the standard NwN themes, as I am extremely tired of both the standard selection and even sadly, now, Morts own override pack, and play NwN these days with music off.

Part of the criteria for my selection is they'll all be non-lyrical, and all fit our setting.

For instance, so far, I've been utilising music from Fallout 1 and 2, as well as Warhammer 40K, and even Assassins Creed.

Music themes... go.

Lord of the Rings music would be pretty awesome.

Sadly I am not skilled in the "downloaded link" file thingy you asked for.

But, I tend to have the NwN sounds off and listen to just about anything from Apocalyptica.  Most of their music is without lyrics, and I find rather fitting for our setting.

Vinyls for the Vinyl Throne!

On a more serious note - I'd suggest Planescape Torment and Age of Empires themes as well.

I listen to all my music off of youtube, sorry, but if you do searches for Warhammer40k music video's good shit usually turns up.

Music from Kitaro, especially from the Kojiki album, is good option I think.

"Septimus" from the Stardust soundtrack

Conan the Barbarian: Anvil of Crom

Davy Jones theme from Pirates of the Caribbean 2

"Swordplay" from Kingdom of Heaven soundtrack

"The Gravel Road" from The Village

"Battle For Asylia" from Lair

Various songs from How To Train Your Dragon soundtrack might work.  A few are too scene-specific, but some are more atmospheric and would fit game areas well.

Gladiator theme

"For The World" from Hero

There's probably a track or two from the "Inception" soundtrack that would fit well for exploration, too.

Nintey-nine nights music would be rather cool. I remember once listening to Mozart when we were in large-scale battles and it sounded awsome.

The Witcher 1 & 2 soundtracks.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VgMqhGjLyKs&feature=BFa&list=PL814581FA1A40948D&index=2

You may also want to consider Fallout Tactics and Brotherhood of Steel

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qU3z8o1vgAc&feature=BFa&list=PLBB835D7CFF6AC61E&index=1

There may also be some tracks from the Arcanum soundtrack, particularly the tracks, Kerghans Castle and The Void, the other tracks are probably ill suiting.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x-5VdCypRDo&feature=BFa&list=PLD7773D0B138239F4&index=13

An Adventure game called Daemonica also had a great soundtrack, but I couldn't find much on it I'm afraid. This gameplay video was the best I could find.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NlivCvf9b_E&feature=related

To get the full soundtrack for Daemonica you'd probably need to download the game.

I hope you find some you like here!

As much as I didn't enjoy the movie, the soundtrack to Pan's Labyrinthe should definitely be mined for any new music update.

To update there've been some awesome suggestions so far, (though technically my favorite idea was mine anyway, the warhammer 40k music one - Jeremy Soule is exceptional), and CroakingOpera's jungle themes get a look in.

There have also been some shamefully embarassing choices picked too, and I'll go through those now, with a view to perhaps enlightening the kind people on what is actually required here :D

Not convinced that I want LOTR themes.  Although it's an obvious pick, they're too intrinsically linked with their subject matter, and too many people will recognise the Bridge of Khazad Dhum or whatever for it to be worthwhile for me!

The stronghold tracks you posted are 35 seconds long Luke Danger, what the hell?

Don't want any heavy metal in the background for NwN (!!!)

Definitely don't want the GAME OF THRONES theme.  You best be trollin'.  How will that fit a jaunt in the jungle, or a delve into a crypt, or sitting around Mistlocke?  Plus it's very short.

I might have a look at Gladiator and Pans Labyrinth.  Ambient music on a decent budget scale can work.

Will get through some more soon :)

Huh? That's odd. They should go to mulit-minute marks, usually ~ 3 5/6's minutes. Links work fine for me.

Edit: OH, only one of them is 35 seconds long, "the Chant", the rest of the Stronghold soundtrack is generally multi-minute. Few more Stronghold links.

Ah, Age of Mythology. That's some good music.

Here's some from Rise of Legends, a game that mixes the sci-fi, steampunk/clockpunk, and high sci-fi genre (with a bit of a Goa'uld twist)

Vinci Victory Theme: (Badass victory for the industrialists)

Alin Victory Theme: (Another badass victory, this time for the mystics)

Alin Non-combat Theme: (beautiful flute/violin bit)

Black Sands album by Bonobo. Ambient, yet strangely fitting. Try the title track.

Soundtrack to a Vacant Life by the Flashbulb. Hello, I'm Benn is particularly great.

I listen to these a lot when playing.

This is one I thought would work well for wandering the forgotten forest. It's got a mysterious theme to it.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MUz5I9FsFWs

Something fitting for a keep or maybe even nebezzdos itself. It instills an imposing or challenging theme to mind.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jtzPn8dQuO4

Something like a poison brewer's lab, or an assassin's den. The locale of shady dealings.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xdpii3CW7rc

I think this would fit that desert area pretty well, if it ever develops.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BCjQyL9jgOI

Good cave music, to instill a sense of loneliness and apprehension.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yX7I_S2UIcU

I think this creates a good vibe of yourself viewing something ancient, something grander than yourself and your machinations.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FdZP93aWtB4

A long battle, between rivals of equal strength. Or possible a portside brawl.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Za0rP2dwtxY

A good theme song for the order or the pallid mask if I've ever heard one.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O0sQALQPYp4

Good night travel, or deep below nebezzdos. Dark places that seem alive, yet should definitely not be.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TLkYIiWtgXI

This makes a great song for traveling the desert, keeping an eye out for whereever those marauders may lurk.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_mXVdQEtyvM

And for when they do find you, you got this as a great fight song.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=to1CA_BB3ho

I can think of a bunch more if you're interested.

Great tunes, couldn't find any mp3 download links on the internet for love nor money :(   Like it though

Quote from: "Laughing Octopus"Lots of manga tunes links

Fairly decent, not really anything standout that I thought really truly captured Mistlocke.  Kind of more fitting for JRPG's.  Not bad music or anything, but not EfU.

Quote from: "Juzza"Awakening and highland links

Also like that stuff Relinquish.  Going through it all now.

This is actually done now.  HUGE download, but I think it's worth it, the music in there is all excellent anyway.  Make sure you back up your regular music.  This also includes all of Morts original override.

P.S. I didn't touch the battle music as it is a huge pain in the ass.  If anyone wanted some phat LOOT from me, they could make some fitting custom battle music that goes with these themes !

Should be done!

E.S. Posthumous, amazing group, love their work, I recommend their album.  Chillout central.
Raison D'etre, some fabulous stuff in there
Fallout music by Mark Morgan, highly recommend Fallout New Vegas if you want a break from NwN
Jeremy Soule's work I think he wrote some stuff for NwN anyway, but some of his finest work is there.
Balducaran His tavern themes, superb.

And many, many of the peoples requests in this thread.  Thanks to everyone, you all picked some amazing music anyway.  I couldn't get Stronghold themes for love nor money anywhere, but I found a little workaround which could alter that in future.  Requiem, I will probably give you a tiny bit of loot.

CroakingOpera wins best ambient taste prize though.   Seriously awesome picks.
