Title: The F-Bomb
Post by: AClockworkMelon on June 23, 2011, 04:43:45 PM
The use of the word "Fuck", "Fuckers", "Fucking" (http://www.escapefromundeath.com/forums/showthread.php?t=56618)

1.) Why, on a mature role-playing server where there exists murder, torture, political corruption, theft and sexual content are we afraid of using words that are "crude"?

Fuck Fucking Fucker and Fack! (http://www.escapefromundeath.com/forums/showpost.php?p=166408&postcount=41)

2.) Why is "fuck" more immersion-breaking than any other English word we could use? In the real world the word has existed since the 15th century (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fuck#Usage_history). It's not modern slang.

I'm not so much trying to challenge whatever current rules exist (if any do) regarding word usage as I am looking for someone to point me to an official explanation (or as official of an explanation exists) that I'm sure has been offered somewhere on the forum.

Thanks in advance and apologies if I put this in the wrong forum.

The only 'rules' we have, which we don't really, are against blatant over use.

Kind of a pointless thread, really. We've always said it has its place.

I think (although this is only my own guess and not an official quote or anything) that it's not got so much to do with how it's rationally justifiable, as how it's perceived. A lot of people simply instinctively see the word fuck, as well as the other "letter-words" as simply crude and unfitting for a game like this, and sometimes even immersion-breaking. It's a bit like swearing in church; You can rationalize it all you want, and a lot of people would definitely logically buy it, but it's still offensive to a bunch of people, and you'd definitely be upsetting them no matter how "logically correct" it is to do so.

I know I, personally, am definitely in the "buying it logically, being disturbed by it anyway" crowd, as far as EfU goes.

I'm a returning player who only ever played on the server for a short time in late 2008. I opened up the forums this morning and saw the thread that was posted today (the first one I linked to in my OP) and wasn't clear on the stance regarding the word's usage. So, sorry I didn't know.

Welcome back!

Thanks!

Also: What's the current date in the server? Read the info provided on the homepage and couldn't find mention of it. Don't think it's worth its own thread so I'm asking here. Thanks again.

1381, but bear in mind we've completely abandoned and ignored any kind of canonical timeline.

Will do.

I mainly wanted to know so that I could complete my character's bio with a date of birth. Do people still arrive by appearing at the ziggurat, right? Again, for bio purposes. Don't know whether I should include a reason for his arriving on the island by boat or if he's been zapped up at random.

Hammer 1381, to be more specific. When you log in, you are provided with the date. We still don't seem to have updated the IRC clock.

In addition to my above question: Is there any point in putting in a character age on the customization page? Will it automatically advance as IG years do?

We have nothing against the word. It was merely being used too much for too little. I dont mind people using it but when your all the lines your character speaks contain a "Fuck" or a short sentence with a "Fuck" just to portray how 'badass' you are, it looks crude.

[TK]Shut up you ninny fucks.
[TK]What the fuck?
[TK]For Fuck's Sake.
[TK]You fuckers!
[TK]Shut the fuck up.
[TK]You stupid fucker!

If you use it scarcely, it's fine, and yes this is a mature server, and we dont want the interactions between our characters to look anywhere near like a chatroom of a Counter-Strike server full of 12 year-olds. That's what we dont want. The next step would be for the characters to start using chat acronyms:

WTF
LOL
STFU
FFS
FU

And I hope everyone agrees that's unwanted.

For me, it depends on the character. If I'm playing some filthy thug born in a gutter who lives a life of crime, he's usually going to be pretty foul mouthed. But having said that, its easy to tell people who can use such words tastefully as a means to portray their character compared to people who use such words in an attempt to sound badass.

I think it should only be used when it is most needed and actually has a use of seriousness rather than plain insults. Its boring to see

Try to use it flavorfully, but "Feck" is a good alternative to "Fuck" if you need to use it.

Personally, I prefer it used when it makes sense. Though in my opinion, a lot of swearing kinda makes sense for some characters that're out of their element with adventuring and the hell-hole Ymph ;)
(As in, when getting shot at a lot a swear makes sense, not just walking around Mistlocke)

'Feck' is horrible, and way more jarring than 'fuck', at least IMO.

Feck is a horrible horrible word or any of those stupid substitutes for the word fuck.

I think using "fuck" or any other expletive used commonly in contemporary parlance is often jarring, but usually only because its being used in a decidedly contemporary manner.

It may well have been around for centuries, but people certainly have never used it historically in the way it is used now (ie. so frequent you'd wonder if people have any other vocabulary when it comes to adjectives or adverbs).

So if you use it, use it well, and with purpose, and avoid its contemporary overuse.
