Title: Using Blackout
Post by: Keeper of the White Wyrm on July 17, 2011, 03:06:05 AM
Please, please, please use this sparingly. This function is prone to bugging and gives a lot of heartache and headache to the dms and the victimized player.

If there is no REAL need to black someone out, kindly DON'T. Sitting in the Blackout area is no fun, and it's much more fun involved for both sides if you can think of a way to avoid using this function.

It's a very cool function, but it should be used responsibly as well. :(

Agreed.  It's extremely frustrating to get knocked out multiple times.

I agree with this, since this was introduced some PCs, NO PCs in particular however, have basically used this as their standard subduel mode and it just shouldn't be. Thomas makes the rest of the points I would stress about it not being fun for the person blacked out on several levels and it has been known to bug.

I think Blackout is awesome and should be encouraged, it often leads to better situations, and also allows you to move off with a victim somewhere safe, quickly, instead of waiting around like a sitting target for passerbys/ganksquads.

If there are specific bugs, report them so they can be fixed I guess. :)

Alternative to FD, certainly. As a "I will always use this setting even when it isn't needed", definitely not. Blackout is NOT fun, ever.

Blackout is there to be used, but don't utilise it unless you actually plan to do something with the body, or the target actually needs to be completely in the black.

The bugs associated with it are basically unfixable.

A problem is the player of the character who's been blacked out is basically missing all the fun. Especially if they're blacked out repeatedly, and just left to lie there instead of being blacked out for the purpose of being moved. It's frustrating, especially when you don't know what's going on, knowing that these could be the last moments of your PC's life, and you're being denied the ability to roleplay them out.

It's always important to take into consideration other players' fun, especially when you're potentially ending the life of a PC.

This. In bold.

Good news!

I found the bug that wipes the inventory... dirty little f***er. It will be fixed next reset.

I also made it so you are under a blindness effect rather than a fade out so you can continue / receive tells if a problem occurs. This should make the blackout experience a tad less frustrating.

I think "black out" is an awesome option for carrying a body away so they wake up in an unfamiliar area going "wtf?"... otherwise, it's just ugh.

So far I have only used BO mode when I have wanted to make a prisoner go somewhere and said prisoner kept dragging his feet in an obvious attempt to slow movement down. It's a good alternative to killing the target, I feel.

Howland's fixes will make Blackout mode far more bearable, imo.

I don't like to black people out, as the original poster said, it is boring.

In a recent incident, I had a "knocked out" PC I had captured and was walking off with them, them walking beside me.  Someone else came by, knocked them out for real and tried to carry the corpse-item off.  When I tried to explain they were knocked out already and I had them, I was told otherwise.

If no DM is available, what should happen in that situation?  Can we get a DM ruling that you don't have to be "knocked out" to have someone knocked out?

Yes... Dm will wear the Referee cap when needed.

Use blackout to move people.

Going to bump this thread.

Don't use black out because you are to lazy to wait and let them move themselves a few areas away when you are perfectly safe to let them walk themselves.

For pities sake people, let people be INVOLVED when they are being kidnapped when you are in complete control! BOing someone when you ganked a PC in the middle of the wilderness to "move them somewhere safe" is really uncalled for.

No it isn't.

It's there for a reason. It used to be buggy, now it isn't as far as I know. There are many reasons for using it, beyond simple kidnapping (such as summons, quick muggings, subduals in areas with many hostile NPC's around, etc.). It may be annoying at times to be blacked out, but ultimately it's nothing big.
