Title: Making Mist Paths more Dangerous
Post by: The Gypsy Champion on October 31, 2011, 10:50:40 AM
Every reset, there is a flurry of activity regarding Mist Paths as people scout them out to see where they go in order to set up an efficient quest scheme. There is nothing inherently wrong in this, but when compared to the Path of Rabannatha, they are laughably safe and hold no real danger (Most anyways).

I suggest making them much more dangerous. A % chance of landing in a random area where the Mist goes from your group. A chance to face a hoard of mist monsters and forcing you to fall back. The simple potential of nothing happening as well....

This would make established paths such as the Delving, the path over the mountain (less viable than the delving, of course) much safer and efficient to take. I dislike how people abuse the fact a reset, despite it being the same day, alters the course of where the Mists go.

My thoughts on the problem(?).

I wouldn't mind a small change to how the mist paths work. Instead of having mist path A going to mist path exit B....

Have each mist path take you to a wooded area  like the path of Rabannatha as you suggested.....but make it so it's one of a couple different "mist path" maps.

Within each of those random maps the "path" you are on within the mist, branches off in a number of directions. Each path heads to a different location. And yes, chance at mist monsters and other interesting creations blocking your way inside.

So example.

You take a mist path transition
You load into the "misty woods" area.
The path before you branches off in five directions at a croassroad.
Each one of those paths lead to a different exit.
Some mist path entrances may lead to the same mist path "areas" so there may be some overlap in where each mist path entrance can take you.

Could make them one-way from the crossroads, as well. More dangerous, but it would also (if a bit forcibly) expose PC's new and old to the dangers beyond the Mist, create more chances for random exploration and really drive home the threat of H'bala's horde.

Mist paths are a bit like fast-travel right now- very convenient, little risk involved and predictable, which isn't really how the Mist has been portrayed in the past. Reducing the number of paths in the crossroads helps, but I don't think that a little dose of danger would be amiss either.

This server is hard enough for newcomers, do we really want to add paths with the chance of probable death?

I agree with Damien that more danger in traveling the lands outside than is already present isn't anything to aim for. What might be nice is a bit more unpredictability however - The paths only changing upon reset is a bit stale. Though on the flip-side, having half the group end up somewhere, half somewhere else, as happened with the Bog transition in the beginning, isn't super fun either (although one could argue that it makes sense).

Well, at least with what -I- was saying, wasn't directed at making them harder. Just adding a bit more depth to them so they don't feel like teleport clickies.

Personally, I'm always thrilled when a Mist Path leads to a Mist Area before dumping out to the final destination. I've seen some very cool stuff in those Mist Areas, and wouldn't mind seeing much more.

Mostly what I was after.

I agree with this completely. Still, I believe that the Mist doesn't lend very much reason (without DM intervention) to fear it.

Perhaps a different kind of Mist path could be created. One that is more dangerous, wild, and mysterious. They could exist in places known to be thick with the Mist, such as the Forgotten Forest, Prophet's Peaks, etc.

The Mist in these areas are more active, so therefor, the mist paths should represent that.

Take a mist path and be face to face with three mist-monsters. It's not fun!

That exists already. The point of mist is it's random!

Sometimes you end up in the mountains

Sometimes Nebezzdos

Sometimes mist monsters want to eat your face.

thats not very random! it would be random if the mistmonsters sometimes asked you over for tea.

I find it strange everyone is so terrified of the Pass of Rabannatha, providing you are smart it's really not as dangerous as it's made out to be.  I use it most of the time over Mist Path's and i've yet to die once travelling it, personally I think the dangers of the mist paths are fine as they are.

Make them change, each IG hour or two.

I wasn't implying you should be terrified of them. But that the feel of that path is far closer to what you would expect from a mist path than the usual teleport-ish transitions you find around.
