Title: More unique summoning themes?
Post by: Balop on January 25, 2012, 10:31:26 PM
Would it be possible to create more unique summoning themes for different types of clerics, depending on their god, and for wizard/sorcerers?

Got me thinking that there isn't really a suitable theme for my current clerics goddess, the Red Knight, and there isn't some for many others too. I don't think there'd need to be a theme for each deity, perhaps a couple more to cover more archetypes?

There is a perfect theme for Red Knight at the moment! It's application only, however. Otherwise, FOIG. :)

However, I agree with the OP. More unique summon themes!

There are a ton already actually. New and cool content is preferable than expanding more of that which already has much, though!

Would suggest some options for illusionists to pick what their summons look like, and even make them look like other pcs - if adding more even became a priority.

But it's true there are many, many summon themes already.

There's lots IG already, but if you want more, please suggest specific themes, along with lvl/creature summon, and perhaps some scripting dm will want to add it.

We have over twenty different and unique summoning themes. If you have a really cracking idea for a new theme, by all means suggest!

Perhaps it'd be easier to publish a list of what we currently have, so that people know what they can choose or app for. Themes with the potential to be spoilers could be given a vague description. It saves people making sorcerers just to check the list in the Start Area, or submitting suggestions for themes they could choose anyway.
QuoteEfU:M Summons
You may choose a theme at character creation, or have it altered permanently via an Application. Sorcerers and Conjuration School Wizards have access to most non-application themes. Rangers and Druids have access to most animal themes. Certain Cleric Domains give a PC a specific summoning theme. Wizards have access to themes based upon their School of choice, so a Necromancer's choices include Shadows, Illusionists may choose Illusion theme etc. The default summoning theme is "Island beasts"

The current themes are:
  • Plants (Plant Domain, otherwise Application only)
  • Beholders (Application only)
  • Non-Canon EFU-Specific Aberrant Theme (Enquire with DMs if you wish to app for this)
  • Snakes
  • Ghosts (The summoning points pool for this theme  is improved by SF and GSF Necromancy)
  • ....and so on

While this may seem somewhat self-serving, I had an idea for a chess-related summoning theme, after thinking somewhat on something more fitting. Could be used by PC's who are obsessed with schemes, thinking that life is like a chessboard? And not just Red Knight clerics.

1. White Pawn
2. Red Pawn
3. White Knight
4. Red Knight
5. White Rook
6. Red Rook
7. White Bishop
8. Red Bishop
9. White Queen

I'd expect they'd be armored humanoids dressed depending on what piece they are, lacking heads, or mayhaps golems?

Other deities could have their own themes, such as Bane's theme summoning invisible humanoids with only their gloves being visible, to represent the Black Hand of Bane. I understand, of course, that creating summoning themes for each and every deity would be time-consuming and for flavour, I just thought it'd be a good way to make clerics more unique.

Golems would be a nice theme for Lawful-type clerics such as red knight and bane, as well as machinist types.  Currently the Animated Furniture/clothing theme is available for those, but it doesn't really fit with a machinist.

Bane can get Lawful Evil theme (devil), but that may not be acceptable for one who wants to stay within the town laws.

So for the calculating and methodical, Golems may be a fine theme to add.  They are too strong, so Inferior, Damaged, or Cracked golems would be summonable rather than the standard types.  All of the golems would have high hit points, and would gradually progress into damage and spell resistance.

1.  Incomplete Stone Golem
2.  Damaged Stone Golem
3.  Incomplete Clay Golem - has /3 physical damage resistance
4.  Damaged Clay Golem - has spell resistance as well
5.  Broken Iron Golem - immunity to slashing damage
6.  Partially Restored Iron Golem - immune to magic as well
7.  Clay Golem?

Is summoning golems appropriate though? There's all sorts of rules for creating golems, they're pricy and require powerful magics to create.

Why would anyone create a golem when you could just summon one?

More Animated Objects summoning themes would be cool though.

Certain types of golems are already available as summon spells, so I believe this is hardly an issue.

Well, they would be rejected golems, otherwise they would indeed be too powerful and pricey.  But Animatrons would work just as well.  I just don't think there is anything good for a Machinist character at present, and mechanical creatures would also appeal to lawful clerics.

I will progressively be adding more summoning themes to cover a broader spectrum of concepts, according to my own time constraints. I'll likely add between 3 and 6 of the best, so feel free to continue with your suggestions.

A good conjuration theme would be "Summon  Weapon"

One: Dagger
Two: Shortsword
Three: Longsword
Four: Bastard Sword
Five: Dwarven Waraxe
Six: Greatsword
Seven: Greataxe
Eight: Enchanted Axe
Nine: Holy Sword?

Why have golems when you could have Modrons? :)

To be honest, all I would want to see is a list of all summoning themes. With an app yes or no next to it and maybe the prereqs.

I can post a list if it wouldn't be considered spoilerish.  Though there's a few I haven't seen.

Well, seeing as no one has protested to listing some of them :

Good : Celestial

Neutral : Four elemental types, plus electric elemental. Standard island theme. Snakes, Spiders, Vines, Insect Swarms, Animated Furniture/clothing, Oozes, Illusions.

Evil : Abberations, Devils, Demons, Shadows, Spirits.

By no means a complete list though.

Looking at it there is a lack of much choice for Good, and nothing mechanical, but huge variety otherwise.

There are also three types of shadow conjurations and at least seven types of undead accessible via Animate Dead spells.
