Title: Explain caster levels for crafted items.
Post by: Egon the Monkey on December 23, 2008, 05:42:52 PM
The caster level on Magic Missile wands is 3, not 9 as in the OC, where I tested the crafting to ensure it was worth the 600 gold cost. This wasn't listed anwhere on the site that I've seen.
Can we have a list of what caster level things are created at if they are changed, to avoid further expensive mistakes?

All items are created at min. Caster lvl. Although i first i thought this might need tweaking, actually, wands are really neat even at low lvl cast. 600 coins for 25 charges of unavoidable, unsavable damage is really useful.

MOST items are created at Min caster level.

I think that the items are created at the minium caster level allowable within the toolset.

An example is Magic Missile, which has a minimum Caster Level of 1, yet is created at Caster level 3.

More interesting to me is how the Save DC is defined on items.

Save DC is just regular save DC without the caster skill bonus (int/wis/cha) and caster feats.

What class casts hold person as a level 5 spell?

The last hold person that hit me was off of a wand and the DC was 15.

Wizards do not get hold person until level 5. It is a third circle spell for them.

Yes, which should make it a DC13, not 15.

The DC is actually 12 + Caster level for spells cast from items. This is true of all spells.

Spell DC: 10 + caster ability modifier (Wisdom for clerics, intel for wizards, charisma for sorcerers) + any spell foci + spell level (This does not use the innate level it uses the level the spell is considered for that class)

Back on topic.... Any chance of a list of levels for those of us (i.e.: me) Who don't know min caster levels?
Or are wands always the same as scrolls for casterlevel? That I COULD find out easily enough via trading spells anyway.

I know that some crafted scrolls are obscenely powerful, with really high caster levels.

One would be Missile Storms casting at l9, and that's why Lesser Missile Storm costs double the cost of any other l4 spell to scribe.

Really though, a table of crafted item caster levels would be good for the ones that had been changed. The example above can be a costly mistake for a new wizard player who decides to trade scrolls.

For the most part everything on EFU:A is balanced pretty excellently. You get what you pay for.

That's for casters directly casting the spells.  Not for Wands.

Egon, first place to look would be in the toolset.  Create a Wand and open up the Cast Spell list.  It lists every spell and the possible levels it can be cast at, when placed on an item.  Probably get your list faster if you DIY.

That tells you the default caster level things are crafted at, Efu probably changed some of them.

Er... How do I open EFU resources in the toolset?
I know nothing of tinkering with the nuts and bolts of NWN I'm afraid.
