Title: XP gain inside the Inn
Post by: Krustee on March 19, 2012, 05:59:33 PM
I'd like to see a small XP gain that possibly scales by level within certain areas, like the Mist's End tavern.  Like say, {10-(PC level)} every ten minutes or so of real time.

Since there is already a precedence for a significant XP gain that is already incorporated up to L6, I think it merits some thought whether it wouldn't a small carrot for PCs to hang out in the nicely crafted indoor areas like the Mist's End or the Priory shrine.

It would be nice for atmosphere, and if there is even a slight mechanical reason for PCs to gather in one place then you will get more of them, which would be nice for RP reasons.

Will I get free xp for hanging in the Eyrie?  If so I'm all for it!  But seems silly to gain free xp for hanging out in a place.

We get free XP until L6 no matter what you are doing.  So the precedence is already there.

Guessing so that characters don't have to grind quests to advance to a survivable level?

I just think if you make a small benefit to being inside, then you'll see a bunch of characters inside the Inn instead of standing in the Market Square at noontime in a tropical environment in full armor, or during a driving rain.

More PCs is an area, then more RP.

I personally don't see a big issue with this beyond scripting! It helps encourage a sort of 'meeting place' and really, 10xp-character level every 10 min is such a negligible amount mechanically speaking. It's not like it's going to be a game breaker. You get 40 per tic until 6, then with this it'd be a whopping 4 per tic if you're in the inn specifically, nowhere else, and are not afk.

Would need to consider some sort of wilds equivalent meeting place too though and then factor in that while the inn is safe from withering, it is not safe for wilderness pc's.

Encouraging people to bring some life to the inns --> Good!

Handing out xp for sitting around in a empty place --> Bad!

You could say that you gain the xp until level 6 for doing nothing as well, but that is mostly to bring people who focus solely on rp, like merchants for example, to a base level among the server populace. Everyone else, who quests regulary, usually gets to 6 pretty fast anyway, with or without the bonus.

If you play a character who wants people there, find a way to attract them to the place. I am pretty sure the rewards will find themselves attracted to you too then.

This suggestion mislabels a problem and by doing so attempts to solve it the wrong way.

Hanging around in Mistlocke square for extended periods of time is not bad because of the inn making a more logical meeting place ICly.

If you are really rocking out on a concept that keeps you in one place a lot, and really provide that additional charm and contribution to the gameworld - it's entirely possible to receive CAB xp beyond level 6. We are not going to implement anything for remaining in an inn though.

I can attest to the fact that DMs hand out bonus XP for just standing around, but you have to be interesting while you do it. Such as, say, a really interesting discussion between two or more people, or a bardic performance with style and substance. You don't need to be running around hitting things with your sword in order to enjoy that.

I can also attest to the fact that DMs have been active (at least in my experience) lately in doing this.

I just think its a shame that there is almost never anyone inside the Inn, and I also have zero interest in playing a PC that tries to get people into the Inn for more business - before someone makes that suggestion.

If there is a negligible XP bump that makes being in one place slightly more attractive than another, I just thought it would add to the atmosphere of the server in general and stimulate some RP.  Definately not trying to get more XP for my PC for RPing in the Inn.

This would seem to be preferable than everyone hanging out at the Square or Muskroot's tower to try jump onto a quest-train, but it also seems I'm in the minority and that the DMs have spoken, so I'll quit banging my head on the wall.

I'd rather people be out doing stuff than hiding in the inn all day.

I have an idea for how to gain XP in the inn. It's really quite simple, it involves a DM quest in there and begins like this: H'Bala, Razul and the Count of Old Port walk into a bar...

(Stop me if you've heard it before.)

Seems a little unnecessary to me. Most of the time the DM's seem to be combating the "discussing the weather syndrome" that occurs in the town square and sometimes the inns.

If you want people to hang out at the inn, host interesting events like fight nights with paid entertainment or something.
