Title: Limit cleric amulets based on level
Post by: Pandip on April 09, 2012, 09:05:04 PM
Bear with me for a second, because this is based more on the idea of the suggestion rather than the mechanical implementation of it. What I'm proposing is that we approach amulets much in the same way we approach perks and somehow limit them based on the amount of cleric levels that are taken to avoid powerbuilds. I'm well aware of the fact that this brings up complications, mostly the idea of "what happens if a level 9 cleric dies" and the possible consequences of that happening. So the first question here, I suppose, should be whether or not this is possible to implement.

I don't know if this sentiment is shared, but I feel as if the amulets are the cleric's version of perks despite the fact that their power is based primarily on how influential a cleric can be. And like perks, it seems odd that a cleric who focuses less on his faith and more on her ability with her weapon by taking fighter levels would have the same opportunity as one who focused fully on the pursuit of their religious duties. Plus, limiting multiclassed clerics also just discourages power builds and the like.

Thoughts?

I agree with the sentiment of limiting multi-class clerics amulets. Advancement should be perhaps *much* slower for non-pure classes.

Non Pure Class clerics take a hefty hit in power anyway. Might be better to consider this implementation only when cleric is not your highest level class. Cleric 7 Fighter 1, for example, shouldn't be that much worse off in this manner then Cleric 8.

I think making it exactly as perks would be a simple fix.  having to have 5 lvls of cleric to get it isnt really impeding to people planning onplaying up their being a cleric.  Also, it will almost definitely be there main class (with the most lvls) if they have at least 5 levels.  Finally, lvl 5 only takes 2-3 hours to achieve simply by solo'ing if they're really trying for it.  An acceptable fix?

I like MirrorMasks suggestion.

It's fine as it is, and DMs can adjust or handle things on a case by case basis if needed.

I do not agree with this idea.

Getting that symbol powered is *not* easy.  I have no idea how many prayers it takes to get any powers, but it is a lot.  I collected loads of prayers and never got enough.

If someone is able to get enough, that means they are fostering role playing, so the more power to them.

Leave it as it currently is, there is nothing wrong with cleric multiclasses as long as they rp their cleric levels properly.

What is a "lot"?

I ended up with an amulet before my last untimely death with plusses to a couple of skill checks, another bonus, and a single spell slot.  And, I NEVER accepted or asked for a prayer from a non-dwarf, and got all those bonuses from just taking maybe 3-7 prayers per week since I don't play as often as most folks.  I thought that was pretty good for such a limited base of characters to get prayers from.  Maybe yours was bugged.  I'm just bummed now that after my death, I lost all the bonuses and have to start over.

Any deaths in there that might have reset your amulet?

Multiclassing cleric is already the mechanically inferior choice most of the time, I imagine; done perhaps to play a particular "flavor" of cleric better, and I do not think making this choice less appealing is desirable.

I'm pretty sure there is an invisible 'faith' stat DM's already track.
