I think the system should be tinkered with a small bit. I tried a drug once, been addicted for 2 days now (8 or so hours) where I spent hours real time in game, yet the withdrawl effects seem extremely harsh and long lasted for a single time use. I've been blinded with large stat loses for this single shot use? It seems crazy. The DC t beat the addictions are high and come very very slowly. I have seen I think 2? Anyways, a scaling with amounts and use should come into play better.
I've never been tempted to try this system because of how severe and incredible the penalties seem, for more and more weakening gains.
I guess EfU is sending a message: don't do drugs, you'll regret it. But if you do, you might get some DM loots for playing in character! Except the loots will be a trip to the rehabilitation clinic.
This was a long time ago, but back when I played Gloin he took ONE drink of alcohol (in-character since hey, dwarf) and was immediately 'addicted' to it. And it wasn't something super strong, IIRC.
So while certain wonderdrugs probably should be high risk/high reward, most of the stuff should probably be low risk/low reward.
At least, that's my 2 cents. Though I do like the 'don't do drugs' message :p
