Title: The End of the Conclave
Post by: Howlando on October 25, 2012, 04:12:29 PM
I would like to salute the DM team (and in particular Shadow Charlatan) & the players of the 176 characters that joined the Transcendent Conclave and whose blood made this final ritual possible.

This was an elaborate plot that began early in EFU:A's history and became perhaps one of the key elements of the stories taking place on the surface. I genuinely believe it was a worthy successor to the Spellguard, and probably our most successful & interesting surface-based faction we've had so far.

Killing off a god or making huge changes is not something that the EFU DM takes lightly and for a major plot of this nature we really do our best to make things develop naturally (and in such a way as to perhaps often be over the life-span of many PCs) and in a way that characters really have to earn what happens.

The conclave started off slow- while an amazing and ancient relic floating in the sky, it made itself out as a peace keeping faction between the two extremes of chaos and law and played both ends as it suited them.

With EFU:M, it turned into something better- a genuine empire with a philosophy of expansionism and imperialstic tendencies that simply were not content to maintain the status quo- and so they grabbed at everything that could get.

I am proud to have played only three PCs in the Conclave (one dying on the day of induction) . It was a pleasure and a privledge to do so. While I think my PCs were ended prematurely, I can only admire the tenacity and charisma of the conclave itself in how they portrayed and evolved.

As a player in the Order, I can admit- I felt a bit chagrined, I saw numerous PCs raising swiftly to the ranks of Zeulisad, heard of plots revolving solely around the Conclave (I admit, I did nothing to learn of them) and often complained bitterly with my faction mates about this. Self-centered as per usual, I can only imagine what a blow it must have been to remove this incredibly present force from EFU and I can only wonder what its effects will be upon the environment.

I can only offer the suggestion of a perhaps less politicly ruthless faction, one that has a stake in Mistlocke's goodwill. The conclave felt like this incredible force that you couldn't really oppose, it had no assets to attack or threaten (like the Order's Food Supply), no stake in Mistlocke (that could be perceived) and while you could destroy their PC membership, it didn't take long for their membership to quickly explode and gain vengeance- and reaped the rewards for doing so.

My two cents! Good work all and all!

Absolutely delightful! Ever since I started playing EFU, most of my PCs played a role in this faction, all of my main characters, the sole exception was Faern'Aerthras.

Zeulisad Amadeus Aethersee, the forsaken sun elf generalist wizard, who died maddened with grief and secrets unspoken, swore himself entirely to -his- Oracle after their rise above the sands, I think he was the only PC to be raised to Zeulisad without a consort (Elmo seems to have achieved the same though with Leyph's unique consort.)

Caliphar Elendaerion Shadowfall the part drow blooded abducted magus and self styled Inquisitor of the Shrouded Isles, once Sharantil then Xigiator then silently assassinated by a Sharantil agent apparently by order of the Triumvirate for being a liability! Admittedly this was a bitter end that did not bring me pleasure, but what is done is done.

Caliphar Trinity, of the Sharantil. Balthasar Ehrenhas III joined a few days as an undercover Sharantil agent, after long avoiding their gaze, agreeing to assist them with their ritual in the 'upcoming strike against the Maiden.' Slowly losing his faith in the Gods, he in fact willingly gave his blood as a symbol of the anima, the divine spark of Humanity finishing off my trio of Transcendent with that ever enigmatic rule of threes.

For the rise of Mystryl, the true Goddess of Magic, it was totally worth it.

It was a rough ride I think, having played in it since near its origin to the very last moment. Certainly a quality faction and the result is quite epic. If possible, I think many of those 176 members and more would -love- to get some free lore about the conclave that would no longer be a spoiler! Just those little things that people always wondered, some secrets about the empire and, most importantly, who was KAZ'TU ?! ;)

If someone ever felt the desire and acquired the free time to write something up about the faction and deliver some surprised I think it would be cool.

There was no greater faction in my opinion for the mixture of malicious research and cut-throat politics. What the Spellguard did for the law I feel the Conclave did for honest foreign relations.

Spies, treaties, double dealings, merchant endeavors. Even from EFU:A to EFU:M there were countless great PCs undertaking hugely awesome projects of magic, espionage, and control.

If anything I would say the only downside in my eyes was the adamant "YOU MUST BRING EVERYONE INTO THE FOLD" emphasis on PvP and crushing opposition. Granted it is suiting for the faction to take such a stance but EFU always prized the idea of story and intrigue.

While the Guard factions always had emphasis to "Hunt people down" it was usually those who had done something. It felt at times NPCs would just shriek "BRING THIS FUCKER IN" and promote a heavy air of forced conflict that I feel at times detracted from the overall magical goal and EFU's core pursuits.

A couple of my Conclave characters are missing! Although I personally came to enjoy it less in the later half of efu:m I love the idea and had lots of fun with the Conclave prior to then.

Astounding conclusion to the plot. I was also of the opinion that the Conclave came across as almost too heavy-handed at the end but then realised that it was possible to roll with it. What I do regret is that the attitude for mages eventually became an all-or-nothing thing where you were either a part of the Conclave or a renegade; it made meaningful RP extremely difficult with Conclavists if you played a mage that did not wish to be part of them. Exceptions to this did exist and I treasured them; I had some of my best RP with these.

I am glad that I had the chance to see a bit more of the Conclave with Briar -- she was deliberately created so as to be someone who has at least a chance of making dialogue with most factions. It worked beyond hope for me in the case of the Conclave and I am very happy indeed of the glimpse I received of the Conclave's inner workings in its last days.

Splendid work; I salute all who played Conclavists here in these last days as well as many, many memorable members in earlier times.

Looking through that list I feel bad for the good guys, so heavily outnumbered by Lawful Neutral and Evil!  Having played in practically every stage of the factions development, I feel it was very well worked and a truly interesting take on the standard idea of a mages guild.  Endings do not come much more epic than blowing up a giant castle in the sky and ressurecting a god.  I suppose like many others my only suggestion would have been in regards to the policy of renegade capturing.  Of course the idea of bringing in dangerous/unstable/powerful mages to be controlled was good, but by offering no real alternative it rather tended to hinder the faction.

Essentially, from first to last, what a ride.

So when we're in the field of asking about spoilers, can we know what exactly the connection between the red star as it has been around from the beginning of EFUA actually is as connected to Mystryl?

A wonderfully crafted, intense and all-consuming faction that was always perfectly executed and ever intriguing. Such fantastic characters were spawned from this faction that will always be remembered; both NPC and PC alike.

I thoroughly enjoyed my time playing within this faction and am ever thankful for the fantastic opportunities that presented themselves while doing so. Such a fantastic take on a Mage Guild concept that only amplified how creative and inspirational EFU is and continues to be.

What an end to such an amazing faction. I'm always envious I played a character who actively avoided the conclave whenever I look at screenshots of what you guys accomplished.

The Good: Rather than being a generic mage-guild the conclave was nice in that it actually had more specific and thematic aims and goals. They were fantastic villains that you didn't quite want to condemn because all their resources and might were surely necessary to kill H'bala.

I also found playing a mage who actively avoided the faction extraordinarily fun - it took a lot of effort to be more subtle about spell-casting, and you had to be careful about who you sold potions and wands to, and form alliances with like-minded wizards to trade in high-level spell scrolls.

The Bad: I'm inclined to agree the conclave was sometimes a little too heavy handed when it came to pvp; now it does make sense as they are bound to have more nice stuff by virtue of so many wizards and craftsman. The problem was that any time there was so much as whispers of an interesting artifact, forgotten lore, a ritual to be performed... the conclave was always bound to show up and abscond with it - the end result would be a storyline open to participation by everyone would then be relegated to just the conclave. Or you had to be super-secret about it, and thereby still limit participation.

Does their dominance make sense? Yes. Could it sometimes be discouraging? Yes, and unfortunately there didn't always seem to be a 'lot' you could do about it from a player perspective.

The third incarnation of Mystra's (Midnight) symbol was a ring of seven stars surrounding a rising red mist, spiraling to the heavens. Mystryl's was a single blue-white star. Whereas the second incarnation's symbol was a a simple seven-pointed star.

The conclave had one of the best rank systems I have seen on efu. I jumped on board expecting it could be the end, and loved every second of it. The internal conflict was massive, fighting to earn degrees, thinking of how to not only control other peoples actions, but to earn favour with other members, and then turning on them in hopes they would lose respect!

Brilliant.

I truly regret not having more time for efu during these past few months, as the conclave on its own was an inspiration to play.

Well done to all those who took part, and a thank you got Howland and SC, as well as all the other DMs who had a hand in concluding the conclaves tale.

Unless there is something I am missing I don't really understand why the npcs wanted us to recruit and capture renegades so fiercely. It caused so much tension and grief for most people and since it also lead to a perma death event it could have potentially caused a lot more rage/grief/people quitting lol

IC'ly, to bring about the rebirth of a dead god (which is what Razul was after all the time) required suitable "sacrifice" (blood) of as many different kinds of arcane casters as possible. There were other IC reasons, also.

OOC, for the purposes of making for a good game world it is important that certain kinds of classes have certain kinds of restrictions (beyond mechanical ones) that in some way provide extra challenge or limitation and do something to reduce super powered examples of these classes being incredibly bland.

For example -

Clerics must be dedicated champions of their faith and dogma, as they advance in level they must be a very active champion of their deity or are likely to face spell failure.

Paladins must abide by a very vigorous code of conduct. As they advance in levels, if they are not actively fighting evil then likewise they might fall.

Druids must abide by their oaths, rarely go into town, be actively working to maintain the balance, deal with the existing Druidic Hierarchy, etc.

Up until now, Sorcerers/Wizards must somehow figure out a way to deal with a grasping Mage's Guild (of which there has been a large variety of ways to do so).

Letting everyone cheerfully invis-quest their bland wizards way up to being level 10 (or higher) superwizards with nothing in particular to worry about doesn't make for a very exciting or dynamic playing experience.

It was a great implementation I think, and furthermore was quite fascinating over the -years- of the Conclave's existence. I'm certainly no DM, but I feel that almost everyone with power to hunt renegades in this faction did it quite well, and furthermore with leniency and fitting etiquette.

The Conclave was an antagonist faction for quite a while,  and I personally feel that they restricted themselves quite well when concerning killing players or whatnot over being renegades.

There are a few silly things about the faction perhaps, but I don't think this part was in any way negative. In fact, I found it to be one of the most interesting things about the faction (alongside bonding)

Sorry I should have been more specific. I meant towards the end when the faction was coming to an end and still we were told by dms to be more fierce with renegades and also force or kill other higher level wizards to join us for the Triumph which would have ended with their chars being permed, or was it simply keeping up with the ambience of it all?

I did not as much mind the Conclave hunting mages as much as I minded some specific personal experiences that in retrospect could have been handled better (by both sides! I certainly made mistakes as well.) It added a great deal of story to Ekaterin that she resisted the Conclave so fiercely.

But it was also possible to play a mage so you received little or no attention from the Conclave at all. More, even capture and trial by the Conclave did not equal death -- many chose the collar of the Nebezzdulon instead. I was actually planning a mage character with a quite cowardly personality who would run from the Conclave while she could and take the collar over death if/when caught. Kara and Ekaterin both chose death over servitude. But Kara was an annoying twerp and Ekaterin had a pole up her arse; neither was the type to submit to enslavement and I knew the consequences of that once I was caught.

I was one of these who objected to and criticised what the Conclave became when it turned more harsh and oppressive. Later, I learned that some of my objections had been met and decided that they were the important ones; I returned to play Ekaterin and did not regret it. I had some great interactions with certain Conclavists even though we were in mortal opposition. And I consider Ekaterin's end at the hands of Razul and the Triumvirate a high note in her life even though it was the last one.

The conclave was an awesome faction. As an opponent, ally, or a member I always had awesome expeirences with the conclave. One thing I loved about the conclave was the inner conflict divide. This sometimes resulted in duels to the death over the dumbest minor disputes.

Honestly I think it's a shame those conclave forums couldn't be seen by all the antics were epic. Still I feel that it's a shame this is the way the conclave ended.

Was the soul archive part of the end ritual? when davian was obliterated and absorbed by the archive, he still wanted to serve and razul promised davian that his death would come to serve an ultimate purpose like all the others killed by the archive that they wouldn't be in there forever, and that one day we would all serve once more... i still haven't heard everything about the ritual so im just curious if that was the purpose for the archive.

Quote from: Howland;309097I would like to salute the DM team (and in particular Shadow Charlatan) & the players of the 176 characters that joined the Transcendent Conclave and whose blood made this final ritual possible.

The souls in the Soul Archive were used as sacrifice to the end purpose of Mystryl's rebirth! Rejoice, you were part of the plot to kill Mystra (Midnight) and bring back the first and true Goddess of Magic.

This is also an excellent divergence from the 'canon' events of Mystra's death by Cyric and Shar which would take place three years from the current time IG otherwise. (Not that we much care to limit our creativity to canon FR here at EFU.)
