Only if it's Inquisitor - Dark Heresy!

Regarding 4th ed. Keep in mind that mechanic rules are vastly improved. Do not think it sucks just because you do not agree with the lore changes. The combat, in comparison to any other edition, is much more interesting. Fighters have different abilities they can use, wizards do not have a limited amount of spell slots, and many more awesome things!

Whats Paranioa and Dark Sun?
Title:
Post by: 9lives on January 19, 2009, 09:14:14 AM
Dark Sun was a 2E DND setting, that's like Faerun crossed with Mad Max. Standard D&D races in a setting that is primarily desert, and most of the racial stereotypes are turned on their head.

CANNIBAL HALFLINGS, Half Dwarves and Giants, and shitty Elves.

Paranoia's an old fun game in a future setting, where your friendly Computer controls everthing, knows everthing, and where your missions have two goals: get the Computer's approval, and get the Computer to disapprove of some of your team mates. The mission orders are a pretext to get others accused of some kind of wrong doing.

In the end, you'll die. That's why all your pcs have clones... Fun times.

Dark Sun i've never played.

Although...

I would find a Ravenloft campaign very interesting.

I'm down for either Dark Sun or Ravenloft

Or Planescape

I'm still learning the new 4th ed. rules, and though it seems strange that they have morphed as much as they have in the last 20-30 years (I was a 2nd ed. guy for a long time, but let's face it 3.5 is just technically superior, and with 4th edition it's like a whole new ballgame), I'm finding a lot about them to make me think they have great potential... and combat rounds have seemed to require a shorter amount of time to negotiate in the few sessions we've played using the new rules. My only beef so far is the way multi-classing is handled.

Dark Sun was definitely awesome... I was planning on attempting to adapt it for 4th ed. rules with a newly forming PnP group... Back in the day, I never got to use the material in my Nibenay box set! I just loved those evil sorcerer-kings... (and the way magic works, and the prevalence of psionics, and, and...)

Ravenloft was always another favorite of mine. The idea of the Mists and always being able to create another new land to suit the needs of the story or next adventure was so neat and flexible, while the PCs were trapped there as long as the DM wanted to run that setting. And when it's run its course, he can send them back to where they came from, or basically wherever he wants.

Is this gonna start in the near future, or are we just gonna debate about it for a few more weeks?

Gee. Fitting name for someone so impatient! Yes, we'll be starting this soon. The poll will end tomorrow, and after that, if nobody wants to host the game, I'll throw something together based on the suggestions AND RUN IT MY OWN DAMN SELF.

DAMNIT.

But that doesn't mean new ideas will be rejected outright. Keep 'em coming, and by tomorrow we'll know what's going on and can probably start making characters.

Hmm. As it's play by post, I could actually participate in this. I'm interested, and would be willing to give just about anything a shot. (mind you, Inquisitor does sound interesting as a setting  :P  )

QuoteTHE FOLLOWING IS SECURITY CLEARANCE INFRAREAD â€" CLEARED FOR ALL CITIZENS.

May I be of assistance?

Sure.  Why don’t you tell me how the game works?

I’m sorry citizen, that information is not available at this time.

What do you mean it's not available?

You are not yet a Troubleshooter.  Therefore your security clearance is Infrared.  The rules are security clearance Red.  You are not cleared to know the rules.  At your service.

Huh?  Most games are real eager to teach you the rules.

Not Paranoia.  In Paranoia, you don’t know who your friends are.  You don’t know who your enemies are.  You don’t know how your equipment works.  You don’t know the rules.  One thing you know; everyone is out to get you.  Stay alert!  Trust no one!  Keep your laser handy!  Ignorance is fear; fear is ignorance.  Those are our watchwords.

The back cover copy says something about a computer.

The Computer is your friend!  Trust the Computer.  In Paranoia you play a Troubleshooter in service to the Computer.  You are the Computer’s trusted agent.

How did I get to be a Troubleshooter?

You turned in a friend for treason. He was executed for betraying the Computer.  The Computer rewarded you for your loyalty.

What is a Troubleshooter supposed to do?

Your job is to root out all traitors and execute them.  In other words, to find trouble… and then shoot it.

What's a “traitor”?

A traitor is an evil and malevolent human who has betrayed his friend The Computer and seeks to destroy The Computer, humanity, Alpha Complex and life as we know it.  Traitors must be unmasked and destroyed.

All mutants are traitors.  They are genetically imperfect.  They have no place in Utopia.  They must be eliminated.

All members of secret societies are traitors.  They belong to organisations not officially sanctioned by The Computer.  They conspire against The Computer.  They must be destroyed.

By the way…you are a mutant and a member of a secret society.

I’m a… mutant?

That’s right.  All Troubleshooters would be eager to unmask you as a traitor and execute you.  You work with many troubleshooters.  All of them carry powerful weapons.

Let me get this straight.  I’m a traitor.  The punishment for treason is death.  My job is to hunt down and kill traitors.  I work with other people who have the same orders.  All of them want to kill me.

Not exactly.  All of them want to kill traitors.  They don’t know you’re a Commie mutant traitor yet.

And if they find out I’m a mutant they’ll kill me?

They’ll try.  Of course, if you convict them first, then they will be executed, and you may survive.  Of course, false accusations of treason are themselves treason.

So I want to prove that they’re traitors before they can prove that I’m a traitor.  And if I don’t…I die.

Precisely.  Watch out!  Traitors are everywhere!  By the way: dead traitors cannot testify to their own innocence â€" or against you.  It is best to shoot first and ask questions later.  Stay alert! Trust no one!  Keep your laser handy!

Are you sure this is going to be fun?

Certainly citizen!  Of course it will be fun.  The Computer says so, and The Computer is your friend.  Can you doubt The Computer?  Doubting The Computer is treason.

No!  No, certainly not.  If The Computer says this will be fun, then this certainly will be fun.  Only a Commie mutant traitor could believe otherwise.

Excellent citizen!  You’re getting the idea.  You have just been promoted to security clearance Red.  Welcome to Paranoia.

Paranoia! Friend Computer has made it mandatory.

The great thing about Paranoia is that there are no rules except for one: The Computer is always right.

I remember trying to explain the rules to a friend and he kept asking me how the mechanics worked; so we told him that he'd have to ask The Computer; but the Computer/DM wasn't very helpful at all; and in Paranoia, if the Dungeon Master says "You turn into a turnip." you damn well do; the player quit and we all had a good laugh.

Our first mission in Paranoia was great - we couldn't find the BRIEFING ROOM for four sessions.

Poll closes in 9 hours. The current leader is Other, which implies one of three things: Dark Heresy (Inquisitor), Dark Sun, or Paranoia.

However, I don't know a thing about Paranoia, and I don't "get" it! So someone else would have to run that game.

Dark Sun I don't know anything about -at all-, but from what I hear in the thread it's some desert apocalypse D&D thing?

Dark Heresy, I'm familiar with, because I used to play Inquisitor a little bit. Warhammer 40k, good setting, good oppourtunity for creative actions. You can pretty much do anything you can think of, if you roll for it. At least, that's how I understand it.

As for the other games on the poll! D&D 3rd and 4th each have 5 votes, which is a tie. Again, I don't know about how 4th works, but in this case I'd be willing to learn it. Free-form only got one vote, so I don't think that'll work, but if that voter is looking for something that rewards creative ideas then I'd suggest Dark Heresy of all the current options.

Therefore, in regards to the D&D thing, I'll make one more plea for anyone willing to run a game on either system. If I don't get any offers then I'll run 3.5, which seems like a decent compromise. Not that I don't have the time to look it up, but I think it's safe to say that I won't hold anyone to obscure rules. When in doubt, we'll just roll a skill/ability check and call it even. Best to keep it simple, right? Anyway, I hear it's a little faster paced, and fixes a lot of the issues from 3rd. It would be an original campaign, not something from a book, and would be customized to the characters that sign up. I'm think a cap of 6 players would do at the beginning at least, and we can increase or

 REDUCE

that number as necessary.

SO! Last chance! Anyone willing to try their hand at running one of the OTHER games, or one of the D&D variants? If we have a couple games going at once, I don't think it will be a problem.

I very tentatively might be willing to run a Dark Heresy game, as it is indeed a very interesting setting, even with the risk of drowning in GRIMDARK. I could write up a brief overview similar to the Paranoia one if anyone was interested, from the point of view of a newly inducted Inquisitorial mook red shirt valued operative.
