Title: Apocalypse of Gamespy Cometh

Not sure exactly what this means for EFU and similar PW servers on NWN1 and NWN2, but there simply isn't another medium like NWN1 or 2 out there to go to. If it becomes impossible to get new players if they can only find EFU with direct connect.....

=(

This does not make nwn unplayable, as nwn never worked through gamespy.

It is just server listing.

You can still play normally and connect through the clients browser History / Favorites, or if you don't have the server in them, add it or use direct connect.

It just prevents people from searching server list for this or any other server. You need to use outsider sources for it.

Is this the eventual end of NWN?  Without new players... :(

Likely it just means that random new guys won't be jumping in anymore, or at least nowhere near quite as often, which wasn't often anyway. These days most new guys are those who were invited by a friend to play. So just keep inviting friends who you think might be interested.

Efu should just be given 500 million with how much money this government wastes.

I don't think we've gotten random server wanderers in a while. Besides, NWN is almost over a decade old, you realize (it'll turn 11 june/july of next year). This was inevitable and it's amazing support has lasted this long.

Well, we do get random server wanderers all the time, but sadly they very rarely manage to stick around.

I was a random server wanderer.

Did some research, albeit half of this is based on rumor and speculation.

Gamespy got bought out by a mobile games company a while ago.   The first round of games shut down were some of those with the smallest populations, which were still up.  Companies which were effected by this were not even told in advance that the servers were coming down.  Some were given a chance, after, to pay to put them back up, the demands were outrageous, tens of thousands of dollars to run a server with bandwith demands so low any of our home PCs could handle it on a personal cable line without issue.

It is unclear if they are going to be turning off more soon or not.  Some companies pay for the service, some don't, our best hope is that Bioware has some sort of long term contract for this stuff.

We may be doomed or not.  we just can't know with the current information available.

As to random server wanderers, they DO still come.  I see them all the time, but then again, I am looking for them, I see at least 3 a week, those are just the ones I flag down and then try to make feel involved and feel welcome so they stick around.

Random server wanderers go on to do great things, perhaps the most noteworthy recent example was Pentaxius, aka Coggy aka Mr. Axioms.

This is actually how I showed up. I was playing another PW and was looking for something more exotic and different from the other PW's. Just stumbled on EFU in it's infancy!

Yeah but that was years ago. NWN's player base isn't quite as brimming with vitality. The sequel has come and gone and the next abomination is in development. At this point NWN is a niche title, a 'Good Old Game' played by grognards of the genre.

Like I said people.

What ever they do does not affect whether we are able to play nwn. We are not "doomed". Nwn never ran on gamespy or any centered servers. This is the best style of old game that isn't destroyed by this, unlike old star wars galaxies what ever it was.

We just lose server list of all servers that are there, so folks can't randomly find them, only connect through direct connect / history / favorites.

Remember, also, that as other servers might crumble, their players will look desperately for a new place to go.  In the process, we might actually have a net gain of players.

The thing is that they'll have to know the server's details in order to connect. We'd have to advertise.

Does this have something to do with why gamespy is appearing as "Lamespy" when i launch nwn?

More information.  The mobile company is a lying sack of crap.  This does not bode well for the fiture.

You do know google adjusts searches by your previous searches and website visiting. Folks won't get same results.

Strange, the first, third fourth and fifth site listed under nwn roleplay server is one I've never heard of or visited.

Mass e-mail inviting folks to check out EFU from both forum databases (New and old) + plus advertising on Rededdit along with other sites should help bring both old players and newer ones back to the server

We  should get added to the roleplay section and perhaps PW story as well as soon as we can.

Why are we not on the list, yet?  If no DM wants to write them an email, heck, i'll write it!

There are dozens of similar things, similar pages, programs that try to hold up lists and even replace old gamespy server listing. Maybe it might be worth taking up to, maybe not. I am not myself very eager to spread it all around in random lists. They all seem a bit too self-made and unkown.

That said, maybe it needs to be considered sooner or later.

Ah, I did not realize there were others.  I'll see which seem like the most popular ones and sign us up for them?  The more, the better, no?  At worst someone wastes a little bit of effort adding us to a list which later disappears, at best, we get  more players.

I don't see any big commitment, send them the server information, that is it?
