I have to say, the way quarterstaves work as double-weapons on the server is neat. It turns a rather underwhelming weapon into something a lot more interesting for characters with simple weapon proficiencies.
This, however, does come at the cost of making it a lot more difficult for a mage, druid, or elderly person to bop someone on the head with their trusty shillelaghs in a pinch. Now of course there are spears and clubs for these classes that work just as well... but sadly they just don't have the aesthetic appeal of a gnarled wood staff. Despite the mechanical change I seldom see them being used for anything outside of a prop, or in the case of very specific items like the Mushroom-Fiber staff (which has the TWF feats attached).
I have no idea how others feel on the matter, but might it be possible to re-asses its status as a double-weapon?
If there were a way of keeping it as a double weapon but letting people switch between the two using a chat command or something (removing an attack per round and applying a bonus to attack to compensate) that'd be great. Not sure how possible that is.
The fact that, as you say, you only use these things in a pinch, means that using them being difficult shouldn't be all that much of a problem.
You're a goddamn wizard, act like it and bumble with weapons or get a proper weapon and play a battlemage.
1/2 AB progression makes you 'bumble' melee combat, -4/-8 with a weapon is unusable. And this isn't just in reference to wizard concepts; I'm sure there's any number of druids or nature priests who want to beat people with a stick too.
Fact of the matter is that it's not going to get turned back, and putting in a script to switch it around at will is, to reference Paha, 'a bit of scripting'.
