Title: Laysword Fighter Perk
Post by: Ebok on December 27, 2012, 07:46:48 AM
QuoteLay Sword
Temples of all faiths often boast a number of lay members skilled with  blade and hammer, but unsuited for the life of a priest. These men wage  war for their respective deities, taking orders not from worldly lords  but the sanctified mouths of priests and priestesses.

Level 1: +1 vs Divine
Level 5: +1 Will
Level 8: +1 Universal Saves

Maybe this is over reaching, but it just came up in IRC. This perk needs Help.
The Level 1 is a +1 on saves vs divine spells, which are almost never used and when they are used they are almost always friendly. So this is basically not an ability at all, since +1 is pathetic even on loot.

Level 5: +1 will, not horrible, but seriously nothing when compared to the rest of the perks.

Level 8: +1 all saves, great!
I recommend making the level one immunity to something, or +1 divine damage, or something that's a bit interesting. And the level 5 should really be a +2 will, but might be okay if the level one was at least applicable.

Why not something to the effect of... I don't know

Lvl 1: +2 vs fear

Lvl 5: Strong Soul

Lvl 8: Divine Grace

Revamping a lot of the more "stingy" perks would certainly be nice! A little more +2/3 against mind effecting, light resists against things that are prominent than divine damage, or greater singular skill bonuses to match the class / perk would be superb!

I like Gotham's suggestion although Divine Grace is waaaaaaaaaaaaay too powerful. Just keep it at +1 universal saves at level 8 in my opinion.

I agree.  Lay sword looks like one of the weakest, mechanically, perk packs to me.  Take Gothams suggestion, I really like it.  I do not think divine grace is too powerful, how many other fighter class features benefit from Charisma?

I think +4 lore or so, also added at 5 makes sense thematically to represent religious study.

Giving the background Divine Grace bonus feat isn't a bad idea at alll. If you're a pure class fighter with decent enough charisma to take advantage of it, it's come at the cost of STR / CON, etc - so an extra +2 or so universal saves isn't unbalancing in that situation.

+2 will and +1 fortitude and reflex is pretty tasty, personally i think this is one of the better fighter perks. They don't really have the same kick as the sorceror or rogue perks but I'm pretty sure that's intentional.

I'd like to adjust fighter perks eventually, but it is not a huge priority.

You guys have been so busy lately, even during Christmas! It's appreciated greatly.

If you feel like outsourcing, please send the script to me and I will learn NWScript and absolutely not sell it to your competitors.

Well let's put some numbers out there as to why Divine Grace is a terrible idea for pure fighters.

You can well enough start with a very mechanically savvy build of:

16/10/14/12(wis)/10/14

Drink a Eagle's Splendor and, oh look: your pure fighter has +4 to all saves, combined with the +1 fort and +1 will you already received from the Strong Soul feat.

As opposed to permanent concealment, immunity to spells, movement speed bonuses, hard bonuses to DEX and CON, AB bonuses, DR, powerful summon themes and things the other perks and classes give? I think a +4 to saves, though rather large, really doesn't overshadow other perks much.

I thought we're discussing a Fighter perk here? What do the perks of other classes have to do with it?

And no. No Fighter perk is anything as powerful as giving +5/+4/+5 to saves.
