Title: The Sleep Spell
Post by: Mr Howardson on January 03, 2013, 06:24:32 AM
Since the spell SCARE has had its HD cap removed, it seems only fair if the spell SLEEP did as well.

The Coup De Grace is removed after level 4, and only high level mages will be effective against similarly leveled fighters.

The way I see it is that Sleep currently effects 1d4 individuals according to their level and doesn't work on individuals past level 5.

A level 5 enchanter will only be able to put to sleep one level 5, a level 6 one level 6, a level 10 wizard would be able to put to sleep five level 2s, three level threes, 2 level 5s, and only one level 6/7/8/9/10 if necessary.

It'd make the spell not so ignored and coup de grace isn't a thing to worry about.

Wouldn;t doing this just turn the Sleep Spell into an extended, Mass Command spell?

Currenly Colour Spray just stomps all over it, and Enchantment is pretty weak at anything other than alpha striking a single foe. Not to mention Elves being immune to this spell.

If this was 3 rounds +1 per level and uncapped it would be an OP getaway spell or means to knock out opposition, since their allies would have to go round hitting them. On the other hand if it was more like Colour Spray and was uncapped HD, 1+1d4 Rounds or 1 round per 2 levels, it would be quite useable without being way too good. The range is better but unlike Colour Spray you can't make repeat attacks.

Not to mention that the DMs actually implemented a Rouse spell, which I don't think is ever used because there's simply no point.

Yes, I'm for this but we haven't implemented for some reason. Eventually...

items with this effect remain unchanged (hypnotic parasites)

hypnotic parasites still work as previously (they still consider the target's HD when you try to use them, meaning, the item's spell do not work as the caster's spell)

to make it clearer: it seems that the changes were done only on the way the caster casts the spell. but whatever item with the sleep ability will not ignore the HD as the mechanic change suggests.

Hate to look a gift horse in the mouth but might I suggest a change for SF:Enchantment?
SF: 4 becomes 5 or 1d4 becomes 1d5
GSF: 5 becomes 6 or 1d5 becomes 1d6

It's helpful but I still wouldn't use this over say, Command, Nybor's or even Grease on an Enchanter. Level caps in general are a bit of a poor mechanism on a server where you can't estimate the level of a target. On the other hand, you can guess IC if something might be immune to Mind spells/Sleep etc.

What this means is if you can Sleep >1 thing you can probably trivially beat it anyway. You still can't target it on a threat because it will potentially just knock out the weaker foes.

Colour Spray is still amazingly better because you can fire that across a group and hope that a couple of them flunk their Will save. Or aim it at the most dangerous enemy and know that you'll force them to make a save. Could Sleep have the duration nerfed but remove the HD limitation, perhaps?

Quote from: ShadowCharlatan;338726Let me be clear on what this change was: Sleep can now effect PCs of greater than level 5.

It does not completely ignore HD in all concerns, and still only puts to sleep 4+1d4 HD of creatures.

I used the spell near me and I had to make the save. I used the parasites and I did not get a save. That's what made me call for attention on the matter.
