hoyl shit check that out
Centuries have passed since the towering peaks of Ibrandul's Reach were first inhabited. Originally designed as a stronghold for the armies of Man, in recent decades it has been become the perfect prison. Only accessible through an ancient, thousand meter lift, guarded at both ends by the stoic Order of the March, more than three thousand prisoners alone reside in the great main hall, walking free without shackles or bars. Murder, theft, and other crimes are common, but under the scrutiny of the Order there is relative security. In fact, the people of Ibrandul's Reach operate more as a community than a prison, with trade between halls, businesses, entertainment, places of worship, and residential areas. Sixty years in this place have seen families and children emerge, and life flows ever onwards through an uneasy peace.
But no person has ever left. Not even the Order of the March descends the great lift to the flatlands below. Attempts have been made to form governments or revolutions, but time and again the truth has been made clear; this is a prison, and prisoners are not free men. It has been eleven years since the last open rebellion, and many are quite willing to forget about those dark days when the streets ran red and the screaming lingered for weeks on end.
Ten years ago marked the last remarkable change seen in Ibrandul's Reach. A cold, vicious looking woman known only as Commander Dawnburn came up the lift with a small group of Knights. Scarred and ravaged by some great battle, many were on their last breath as they marched through the gates. In private, words were traded between Dawnburn and the local Commander, who had kept his position for twenty years, through the rebellions and attempts on his life. After that meeting, he retired to a life of seclusion, and died only a few days later. Dawnburn took over command of the Ibrandul's Reach prison facility, and since that time, no one has come up from the lift.

Is this the end of your life? The people around you say yes. You can find everything here; food, sex, alcohol, battle, religion, wealth, prestige, and even peace. None, however, fool themselves into believing that there is freedom. Especially since the lift stopped its operations ten years ago, the dream of escaping from Ibrandul's Reach has all but perished.
But you know something the others don't, something you have not shared with anyone, and have kept to yourself until now. You will be the one to escape from Ibrandul's Reach. You have known it since you arrived, either by the lift or at birth. In your younger days, you saw visions of the sun, and then the sky. Recently, the visions have disappeared, leaving you with a sense of emptiness. Yes, an emptiness that has to be filled. You are going to escape from Ibrandul's Reach, and you're going tonight.

Sup my babies. LTS what what. Okay, that's some stuff I wrote because Iono. If you'll excuse the blatant cop-out of choosing a setting that involves both an underground escape quest and an ancient city-like prison, this is the idea: You live in Ibrandul's Reach. You have either been born here, or arrived by the lift at least ten years ago. You're not going to a prison like this for neglecting your baby or grandma. You must have either shaken your baby or curbstomped your grandma. Srsly, you're guilty, or your lawyer sucked.
Any class/race combination is fine. That includes subraces (if brought by lift) and prestige classes. Paladins exist, although if you came by the lift then you might got some 'splainin' to do.
I've never DMed before so holy crap, uhhhh
uhhh
Okay. So essentially, I am asking you to be as colourful as you like. Flesh out the world around you, and feel free to use minor NPCs. Create a history, whether your character is part of it or not. The prison goes back 60 years, but what might it have been like before then? What is life like in the more respectable parts of town, where people have wealth and guards walk the streets? Who are the major players, the hip dawgs who have their ears to the ground?
As for the major stuff: Let's say the 3rd edition standard pantheon for simplicity's sake. One thing: There was no Dawn Cataclysm, and there was no Time of Troubles. There is only one continent, separated along racial lines, with monsters spread throughout. Halflings and Gnomes live together; as do the different types of humans, elves, dwarves, etc. Essentially, everybody has got their own piece of the pie. It wasn't always this way; as recently as seventy years back, there was a war which threatened to destroy the entire continent. Its resolution was a grudging diplomatic affair, which left many soldiers on all sides feeling discontent, as though their sacrifices had been for nothing.
Since that time, people of all races have focused quite heavily on just trying to rebuild, although tensions are high on the elvish and dwarvish borders. The alliance of Halflings and Gnomes leads a council of all the races, discussing things such as the extermination of monstrous races (gnolls, orcs, etc.) or international trade. Finally, for the purposes of this game I'm removing the necessity for Druids and Rangers to pick a deity, and Clerics/Paladins can serve an ideal. I've always liked that idea.
So, post your character sheets with all the relevant information. For ability scores, let's say a 34 point buy. Start at level 3 I think. No more than one base ability at 18 though. So, an Elf can have 18 Dex and 18 Strength, but not 20 Dex (That's 18 + 2 sup.)
And yeah.
So yeah.
Ideas, suggestions, comments, questions, put it in. Stick it in.
The thread.
Oh yeah.
This is actually pretty cool.
What's the starting level? I recommend against picking 1 as it's the worst D&D has to offer. (IMO)
Make it 3 or 2! (IMO 3, Dark Sunny. And i liek ur ideaz! <3 *dance*)
Edit: And is it 3.0 or 3.5?
Shit, yeah. Good point. Well if somebody can tell me what the diff. is between 3.0 and 3.5 then I can tell you better.
As for starting level, how about 3? I dunno how fast advancement will happen, but we'll see when we get into it.
For all your 3.5 needs, LTS. I suggest 3.5.

I dunno. What are the major differences? More skill points for bards? That's fine, whatev. We'll say 3.0 and 3.5 and if you want to use the rules from either one just say so, if not, just be like oh hey, here's my character, I'm chill.
Bonus XP for chill.
If you want to make up your own stuff that's fine too. Switch something out for something else. I dunno. Just so long as you can justify it.
Please, no kobolds that can shift into gods at level 5 (//%22http://forums.gleemax.com/showthread.php?t=491801%22).
Which sourcebooks are allowed? Are base classes and PRCs from books other the System Reference Document (Which are Players Handbook and Dungeon Masters Guide) allowed?
Go with 3.5 (don't mix them!). The only reason there is a 3.5 is because it was warranted, it's a safe bet it's better than 3.0 (and it is). For your own sake, don't allow splat books but stick with core (which is covered by the OGL) as far as possible. For anything splat, make sure you are provided with a source (and even then remain critical).
Myth-Weavers (http://www.myth-weavers.com/sheets/?) revived and the 3E Profiler project and lets users store, modify, and share character sheets. If you're lazy or need help creating a character, here (http://www.pathguy.com/cg35.htm) is a powerful Java applet. If you need a dice roller, Invisible Castle (http://invisiblecastle.com/roller/) has a great one.
Fine, Fine! 3.5 core books are fine! If you have a question about a specific class/race whatever then ask.
Okay, question:
So here's my question, I've thought of the whole background, some NPCs all that, should I be posting all the info here, or should I be giving that stuff to you (LTS) in a PM?
PM would be best I think. Although, you know, I really haven't seen anyone post anything yet. Isn't this pretty much moot by now?
*cry*
I'd still be up for it.
