Title: monster spell penetration
Post by: Stark on August 31, 2013, 08:38:09 PM
Do some of EFU spellcasters have spell penetration? I have noticed that even when I have, say combined will and mind affecting +9 bonus, some spells in status window show that my bonus is +8. I am unsure of the reason and wonder is it caused by spell penetration.

Spell penetration is used to determine if they bypass your spell resistance. Spell resistance is something only certain items/subraces grant. It has no effect on your saving throws.

As for why it could be happening. Not all will saves are mind effecting. For example a save vs a sonic trap is a will save but it is a safe vs traps rather than mind effecting.

Well, here is an example: "Will save vs. Mind Spells: *failure* (6 + 8 = 14 vs. DC: 15)"

Character base will save(displayed in character window when naked): 6
Extra will save from shield: 1
Extra save vs mind-affecting from shield: 1
Extra save vs mind-affecting from helmet: 1

That was Kobold High priest casting some spell on me(possibly hold person).

Kobolds frequently cast "Doom" which reduces your saving throws by 2, do you have spellcraft by any chance? As if you have at least 5 ranks in spellcraft having Doom cast on you would explain the it. If you're not sure what the spell was cast it's hard to tell really. I've never had any issues with saving throws not being counted. It's usually an error in my own calculations when I do.

This gets update, I tested it with PC's and it seems that in my case "Shield of the Will" did not provide correct bonus against mind-affecting. It is still like this, and I am unsure if it's bug or not.

'mind effecting' and 'will' are two different saves. Mind effecting will not give a bonus to a will save, while a will bonus will give a bonus to a mind effecting save.

I know, it's dumb, but that's just how it is. :S

the extra saves on each item might not stack, perhaps?
