Title: Give the Covenant alternate access to the Lowerdark
Post by: bobofwestoregonusa on April 11, 2018, 05:40:11 PM
Hi,

Currently any member of the Covenant who takes the faction war or anti slavery rhetoric seriously has no means to do the thing the ooze says it's doing and fighting the dread without traveling though enemy territory.

New Path guards one entrance to the lowerdark and the mound guards another. This makes the covenant even more irrelevant to non-bandits because all they can do is pretend to fight the dread without passing through enemy territory.

While I don't mind lower being "bandit the faction" the that there isn't an ooze cube anywhere in the lowerdark makes it very hard to take anything the faction says or does seriously, as all they ever tend to do is attack upper

This sounds like a conceptual issue more than a server one. As far as I can tell, there's nothing keeping the Covenant from entering Sanctuary. In fact, in the past, they have practically been encouraged to create additional conflict in Sanctuary using anti-establishment rhetoric and have even made it onto the council. I think the perception that they can't go into the Lowerdark because Magnatz owns the lift and there is a Society camp on the way down is an obstacle of your own making. Most PCs don't actually like Magnatz IC, but tolerate his presence because he's powerful and because he owns the lift. The Society camp shouldn't discourage people from going down to the Lowerdark. The people in that camp are probably as tired and haggard as anyone might be during an extended patrol of the Lowerdark. The Society is also a very lawful, order-driven organization that isn't going to just outright attack someone on a whim, even if they're a known member of the Covenant.

That said, I do think it'd be a good idea to give the Covenant more of a visible presence throughout the server, as they're largely restricted to an unpleasing section of Dunwarren that people don't really have a reason to go to anymore. There are a lot of contributing factors to this, but one of them is definitely visibility; even the Society have their strange and unseemly knights on guard throughout Sanctuary and make for an easy talking point for new players/characters. The Covenant don't have any "advertising" NPC presence outside of Lower.

I personally don't see why using the lift would be much trouble for the Covenant.  Magnatz uses ancient primal magic which in my opinion is similar to the ancient primordial power of the ooze.  Also the so called 'slaves' in the mines if you talk to them even say they're not slaves but trading work willingly for safety.

I do strongly disagree that Covenant should be just OK or content walking through a camp of NPCs they would likely fight and purge for being freak aberrants.  Thats nots a conceptual issue thats baseline faction thing.

Really, just use the lift I say!

To free the slaves.  To purge the world.  To slay the oppressors.

The Covenant of the Pure FREES the SLAVES of the Spellguard.  It PURGES the Exiles of implants and parasites.  It actively combats the OPPRESSIVE IDEOLOGIES of these other two factions that happen to be located very, very close by.

The three factions are designed to conflict with one another like this... it doesn't detract from their ultimate goals.  Every one is checked by the other two in that realm, so they're intended to butt heads to a degree.

Adding an ooze portal to the Lowerdark so faction members can more easily spam Sandy Crypt and kill static spawns is not going to improve the Covenant.

The NPC representation is a worthwhile concern, though.  Stay tuned.

Also I would like to add that they do have a way to get VERY CLOSE to the Lowerdark, and on top of that with the ooze they are by far the most mobile of the factions.
