Title: EE Crashing
Post by: Howlando on December 31, 2018, 04:10:14 AM
All right, as we all know  as of the latest patch the frequency of NWN crashing has dramatically, dramatically increased. To the point that "EE'ed" has become a catch-phrase for crashing. I think this is really a shame and we need to get this fixed. I'm far from an expert in this subject but it would be great if we could try to isolate which graphics cards/set-ups seem to be particularly crash-prone and which aren't.

Some players have reported that these tweaks from sharkinajar have been helpful: link (https://www.efupw.com/forums/index.php?topic=690728.0)

It might be helpful if players would make posts to this thread with details of their set -up and the frequency of their crashing, or any common situations that seems to cause it.

It has been suggested that we start compiling crash reports, so feel free to respond to this thread with a link to the redmine crash report (see below) so we can start to get a decent collection.

And also please continue to report them to Beamdog, checking this post (https://forums.beamdog.com/discussion/66998/how-to-report-bugs-you-find-in-nwn-ee) for instructions on how to do it properly.

Also, I wanted to mention that we're being extremely merciful with granting TRs to deaths caused by EE crashes. So feel free to let us know if that happened.

We rely on players honesty to only report deaths that are directly attributable to a crash.

The part I put just for intel integrated, glFinishBeforeFBO=1 , may actually help. Needs testing, but may reduce crashes.

So for crashes that don't generate error logs for me, I seem to have a few varieties:
The first appears to be triggered by audio and/or visuals. This can occur at any point when someone starts combat or casts a spell.
The second seems to occur primarily when I am moving the camera either while holding tab, having released tab, or pressing tab in the middle.
The third one generally seems to happen if I am too close to when enemies spawn in.
My current settings are those laid out by shark in their thread, except I haven't yet tried that intel option. I shall try it soon and see if it helps.

I've been having the same issues as Pigadig. Either some sort of spell or visual effect is going off while I'm tabbing, or I'm moving my screen around. Considering I compulsively tab once every second or so, it leads to occasional crashes.

Hope re-affirming it helps.

Make sure you are all up to date in sound drivers. Go and download newest version of open AL package, and make sure you have antivirus off when you download/install anything, if you have such running. Confirm that you also have all drivers updated, not just graphic, but motherboards audio drivers and all.

So I submitted like 15 crash reports to Beamdoge - they marked all but one duplicates, so a good chance they are all caused by same issue.

Hope its resolved quick, it's terrifying !

Additionally, might be related or not, I submitted a bug report on performance deteriorating too -

Basically, I need to restart my client after its been up for a bit, as FPS goes down from 100 to unplayable, as if the cache got swallen or something like that. Restarting nwm client fixes that.
