Trident is equipping into both hands instead of for medium races, instead of 1H, making it objectively worse than a Spear in every way.
As per nwn wiki it's large weapon, so it should be weilded in both hands.
I played on some other servers where spear and trident could be used with shield (main hand for a weapon, off hand for a shield), but I don't think EFU supports such thing.
As per NWN wiki it's large, yes, though by god if I didn't swear I thought it was medium in EfU:R. I remember using one on a worminger halfling. But now i'm not sure because the change notes say it hasn't been touched since 1.69 and EE release. I feel like I may be taking crazy pills
EFU:R, Tridents were 1H weapons (two of my chars had them), and still should be, according to DM Gip. Can't recall if they were Medium then or not, but either they need x3 crit like spears, or they need to return to being 1H, because as they are at the moment, there is no reason to NOT use a Spear instead.
I think we changed them back to large weapons because they looked dumb as medium.
I think on this one we'd go whatever the playerbase wants...
Understandable approach. I've got no complaints on them being 2H... just on them being objectively worse if they are, because then:
Short Spear = 1H, 1d6, x3
Trident = 2H, 1d8, x2 <--- Only one with x2 instead of x3. Given the additional prongs, I can understand the damage per spike is lowered, which decreases penetration... but there should be some sort of upside to this if not via raw damage.
Spear = 2H, 1d8, x3
As it stands, outside of thematics (or powerful tridents being available, which I've only seen once or twice in EfU:R), there's no reason at all to not go with Short Spear or Spear instead, the latter of which has many magical variants (perhaps Short Spear does, too, but I've never seen one).
Well that part is easily handled by just having tridents have some slightly stronger variants available, which certainly HAS been the case and probably will continue to be.
Just a question about whether the item is more thematic as one handed or two. Personally I think probably two - I seem to recall part of the reason we made it medium was to have an option for small size creatures, but that is no longer necessary with short spear.
Oh, a final consideration, particularly in view of Trident being 2H now while remaining weaker than Spears, is that Trident requires MARTIAL proficiency, versus Spear being Simple. Which means for some characters, not only must they spend a feat, but they're doing so for a weapon worse than they could be using without.
