Title: Shortcuts back to 99
Post by: Providence on March 06, 2019, 03:59:31 PM
It's starting to grate on me how easy it is to die if you have to log out (to sleep or for an emergency) and your spawnpoint is automatically set to 94. You then have two options: you either meta-game and ask some people to come get you, or you brave the run home. This is not a very quality of life situation. There should be an easy way to get to 99 relatively safely so that you don't have to worry about logging out at the deeper rings, without either forcing the rest of your group to log back in there with you, or making you risk a highly lethal solo run home.

Edit: obviously this should only apply early on, maybe Ring 95-90.

I firmly disagree with this suggestion. The rings are dangerouse and chosing to live out there and returning to 99 is not without risk.  There also is a Third option besides meta gaming and braving back home. Not making the dangerouse areas your spawn point!

Also most classes prepared properly can make it back from 91-99 alone easily. We don't need shortcuts. Leave the rings as is!

Your reply does nothing to address my point.

Your spawn point is set automatically.

Scenario: you are running rings with friends. You are called in by your boss to go to work. You log out, your friends continue. Then, DM action or IC actions lead them to leave to 99 as a group. Because of automatic spawn points, you will log in in a dangerous ring alone. The only way is to either somehow manage to run back alone or ask a DM to move you.

I would say for just about every class with the right supplies getting back from 88 to 99 is doable and easy. The rings are supposed to be dangerouse and frightening. I am opposed to shortcuts because it makes the rings safer and more coveniant.

Shortcuts also make it harder for the bandit and scum PCS that should utilize the rings as their place of choice for robberies and murder.  The deeper rings should maintain their honor as dangerouse and not have shortcuts back to the safe hubs. Getting back to 99 should be part of the danger and challenge of ring running.

I would rather make this a suggestion about the game not forcing you to set your spawn point at any time outside of DM retirement area, the fugue or prison cells.

Edit: My fellows, please do not discuss the danger levels of the rings on the forum, even the smallest thing can be a spoiler.

IMO, I'd rather go the opposite route - always set your spawn at the last Ring you entered.

It's only a PITA because it happens sometimes, so you have to think about it several rings "back".

Also, in some cases, this is a huge advantage - not a disadvantage - which I think is the original purpose of the decision.

Well what I mean is, give the option to manually set it but do not do so automatically.

If being set to a particular ring just because you reach that far is an issue, perhaps choose not to go that deep.  Don't ring-run deeper just thinking you can suddenly/easily go back to safety.  It's pretty clear in all of the warnings and set-ups that I've read in the wiki and introducing posts that ringrunning is dangerous and that people will be expected to continue or fight their way back.

Real life doesn't line up with the game world. I have to go to work in the morning, or something came up IRL - that means I have to close the game and suddenly my PC disappears into the ether while all their companions continue back to 99. Usually you can rely on server resets to fix these little incongruities, but not when you are forcibly set to spawn on the far side of Hell. It creates an IC issue out of an OOC one.

I think the rings are intentionally just meant to be difficult to trek through after a certain point because after a certain point you're expected to make a tough decision between staying in the deeper rings where passage back and forth may be difficult or costly versus staying in the rings and using even more supplies or doing without before heading back to ring 99 to resupply eventually.

In this regard I think shortcuts back to 99 would detract from this experience and only serve to allow people to more easily set up a precedent for short cuts from AND to the rings you've been too. Not really a precedent I want to set up either.
