Rin of Oldflowers
I created Rin in a hurry in order to get in on NND et al's Oldflower player faction back in December 2021. She was originally speced to be a loyal, witchy but wise advisor and confidant of Audrey Oldflowers.
Backstory: Rin was a foundling in the Cradle of the Baleful Stillborn, she was rescued by the beggar Farrell, snatched away from the shrine before the werewolves could come. She lived for a long time in the woods, caring for the children and mongrels they could retrieve from the shrine, and surviving with the outcasts like Molossus and the less cruel and warlike mongrels. That is how she came into contact with the Oldflowers, as they were midwives to the woe-formed, and would bring the unwanted children of the ward into the woods.
Much Loved by the Moon: Waiting in the bushes by the cradle, as the Moon looked on to horrible scenes of savagery and neglect, hoping for her chance to dart out and grab the child before the wolves came - that was the core of The Moon being in her deity field. It wasn't exactly a religion - more a concept. That no matter how bad it was or alone you were, you could look up, and the Moon would love you. The ideal of unconditional love was what shaped and drove Rin's moral composure. It boiled down to
1.) Every living thing was worthy of love
2.) That man's love was ephemeral and fickle, that it ebbed away exactly when you needed it the most, and that this was the role and place of divine, superhuman, love - that someone hated, despised, and alone was the person who most needed love. So Rin's love/regard would grow in inverse proportion to how much another person was hated.
Overtime this elaborated into pacifism, peace-making, and of course gardening. She came to resemble something like a Quaker, and did in fact change from True Neutral to Neutral Good. (This, and also a nod to one of my favorite writers, is why I used ArsAmatoria player name with this character.)

But, one of the very rewarding things about this character is that her lived history became the real "back story." She started life as a retainer in the ward, but that was exploded spectacularly when Manfred Japes and Orza waged war on the Oldflowers (Rin would eventually commission a song from Milton to try and mock Manfred). This led her deepening her druidism, and she was inducted into the Lost Oaths faction by Tiktika Strawtoss. Overtime she became the Groundskeeper and a sort of quiet leader of a sect of the Druids. She made it her goal to end the enmity between druids and the ward, and this was why she was frequently meddling in politics; and subverting retainers and houses with her druidism. She also had a vision of a peaceful, largely democratic utopian community in the Ponds, and this was why she wrote the Book of the Commons.
Eventually meddling led to The Named Men and ring running, since one of the goals of that was to get Brie Cesme and Sorcha out of reach of the knives of Orza (after Brie's declaiming and accusing Manfred). She didn't feel like her goal of ending enmity between the druids and ward was accomplished yet and that there was still need for a Groundskeeper and to stop Fimbulvetr, so she returned after reaching Bazeel. She and Tiktika then became involved in the effort to enact Phelan's change, and they eventually succeeded. Many of the events of that she included in her Book of Metamorphosis. This was also the period where some elements of the ward were cracking down on druids. Titika would die in a chance encounter, however the planting of the grove did stand out as a sort of minor but mixed victory of her goal to create peace.
After that, there was an internal conflict among the druid faction as it split among the Courts of the Seasons, and there was a period of what was a sort of civil war, mixed in with efforts to aid the Recondite. It was when Rin was very much on the outs with many of the other druids that she found a white stag. Those antlers Mathans would eventually take from her storage and were used to conclude the Winter Court/Fimbulveter glamour.
Eventually though through many other twists and turns, because of her love for her adopted daughter Mebril, she was persuaded to go with her to try and meet the King.
Some special thanks and mentions
Mebril Blackhearth (Ramc): Could write pages about all the things these two went through. Mebril started out as a project to subvert Moonspear but overtime became her adopted daughter and protegee and person she cared most about. Rin was the one who gave Mebril all her tattoos after teaching her how to change form.
Mil Blita (Cisco): Rin and Mil were sisters and survivors, an incredible partner for all the ups and downs of the Druid faction for over a year.
Jacho, Aldo, Haggahwhisp, Daniel (Diablo): Reluctant enemies, wide eyed converts, betrayals, unlikely friends, silly banter, deep discussions about ethics or conspiracies of the rings. We covered a lot of ground, Diablo!
Audrey Oldflowers (NND): Rin thought of Audrey as the best example of what a noble should be, and was why she never really considered herself as an outsider or anti-peerage - there was always people there worth the effort.
Bristol (SgtWombat): I was thoroughly entertained playing the judgmental mother-in-law, and constantly condescending and under-estimating Bristol who was portrayed with perfection.
Wethyr Haremarch, Sykes, Myldewl (Glyph): You play other worldly outriders really well -- all your nature folk or rebels were a joy to interact with.
All my ring running groups: Taban, Tiktika, Earc, Sorcha, Albert, Brie, Jacho, and then Dela, Calli, Mebril and Boots -- it takes a lot of effort (and no small amount of scheduling) to go and do those things, thanks for sharing your stories and helping me tell Rin's.
And also Lalena (94Hippie): Blushing Lalena, the Killdeer, made me smile
Also Ironsides, Skagg, and Abala for what was a very memorable last session!

I really like arranging meetings in the grove and for a brief time Rin was making headway as an open changeling using the grove as a neutral place to make inroads towards her mission of peace. For each new form they learned, Rin would tattoo intricate nature scenes and designs inspired by the encoutner onto her pupils, part of the lesson was, in the end, there's no hiding what you've learned. Keithen for example had a very harrowing journey through the Mongrel woods as a deer being hunted by his fellow Glitt. Mebril would of course be kicked out of Moonspear eventually for her dabbling with changing forms.

The Loot - I had some custom pieces on Rin, which were great. However, I am a bit of a completionist, so I ended up collecting quite a few things over her life. So I'm going to do the full catalog here so you can see how I put it all together. Rin was never an overhelming force, but you better believe she was going to have the right equipment for an given situation. Also I really enjoyed hunting down and finding items to help other people get the things they wanted. She was quite the accomplished treasure hunterer.

Rin is a legend. It will be weird to think of the rings without her. The mother of misfits and the corrupter of men, turning many into changeskins whether they be druid or not. But it was her non-judgemental way that drew Lalena to her, and sometimes got Lalena into some trouble for following Rin. Ultimately Lalena grew to trust that Rin knew what she was doing in most things and followed her even if her gut said that maybe this was not a great idea. But Rin's mischievous sense of humor also created lots of laughs.

Hands down my favorite COR pc. Since Liu Xian, then Emmett, Fernando, and Wesley. All of them loved Rin. I loved Rin.
Very glad to have been a small part of Rin's story, one of my favorite characters to pal around with. Very fond of the memories of her flustering the hell out of Diethard and Lalena with her bluntness. The runs up the Mountain were always a lot of fun, too.

Simple words cannot begin to describe how wonderful Rin was/is. A true successor to a grounds keeper to bring forth balance. Certainly was the final seed that Tik wanted to plant so long ago in hopes that one day, the druids would no longer need to fear being hunted. It was a wild ride spending time with Rin, all the time, and so glad to have been a part of their story. Certainly look forward to the next big thing you do friend!
Merrychase, an amazing quality character of dynamic neutrality! Loved Rin, she was such a favorite.
S+. Rin was such a wholesome, delightful pc to interact with. And every single opportunity my pcs got to interact with her was a treasure in itself. The setting/story benefitted immensely from her simply being, and it speaks volumes that one of my pcs started feeling like they found an adopted auntie in her ;D
Thank you so much for sticking to her and making our adventures so memorable.
She was the greatest of teachers.
Rin was always a very cryptic character, never quite showing too much of herself unless you were well entrenched in her circle. Even then, she kept many secrets and never seemed to say quite everything that was on her mind. A puzzle and a half.
She was something of a mentor, and always spawned very enjoyable RP, even when she was pissed. Kay learned a great deal from Rin and she really did change his world view significantly. Strike another point for the changelings. So crazy that <redacted.> Grats on getting to the center. Or wherever it was she got!

I loved Rin, even though I couldn't continue on my druid. It was a hard time for me and I moved onto Daphne. She was helped quite extensively by Rin, much loved by the moon. And I loved every interaction.

There really aren't enough words to describe how special playing with Rin Farrell was. It was always an absolutely delight to play with- and try to keep up with- moon mom. I have so many screenshots (that I'm going through now) but one of the ones I found that makes me feel like I'm ready to make this post is this one.

It perfectly encapsulates, I think, the core of some of Mebril's struggles and the balm that Rin provided to her heart. Mebril was very much a young woman who felt trapped and doomed by the circumstances she awoke into and later got herself into of her own choices. As friends died around her thanks to the violence of the ward Rin offered Mebril another more hopeful, if seemingly impossible, road to peace.
Rin's little what-might-be stories touched her particularly. Mebril had few illusions, ultimately, that she would ever get the happy ending she wanted in the form she wanted with the apocalyptic nature of the city. And part of her hoped that a future imagined fiercely enough, vividly enough, would be as good as true, somewhere. Rin helped her believe a better world could exist, even if she might not live to see it in this life- maybe the next as she hoped. That she couldn't make things better forever, but she could make them better for now, and really sometimes that's enough.
Mebril learned an incredible amount from Rin and she was one of her moral lodestars. And Rin was generous to everyone with that sort of love and energy. She was her adopted mother, ultimately, and they would go on to pull each other through hell after hell until, ultimately, Mebril did her part to get Rin over the proverbial finish line. I hope they'll see each other again one day by the grace of the Moon's love. Some way or another. Some life or another.

There really is too much to say, Merrychase, and it will probably just come out in dribs and drabs as we reminisce bout the auld times but Rin was a vital, living and evolving character with a deep characterization that didn't compromise principles of the bit. Easily one of the best PCs I've run with or for in any medium. And my favorite PC I've known in my relatively brief time in EFU.

I've been staring at this page for a while now trying to figure out what to say, there's so many things I could say but I don't want to write a book about it.
If I should ever meet a PC that I enjoy playing with more than I did Rin Farrell, I shall consider myself very fortunate.
After all the fun we had ring running when I played Jacho, I couldn't help but gravitate towards Rin on future PCs. Each was a memorable story on its own. The time Rin saved Aldo's life from Anglers, and him eventually returning the favor against the same foe. The trust that Haggahwhisp betrayed, a guilt that felt like a knife in my gut, and eventual mending of a broken friendship. Daniel's scholarly discussions with someone from a completely different walk of life as we looked for secrets hidden in rings near and far.
I'm very sad Rin is gone, but very grateful she was with us for so long. Thank you so much for bringing her to EFU, for the excellent storytelling, roleplaying, and everything else.
What an incredible PC. You did an excellent work portraying her, Merrychase, and she made the Ward and the Druid factions both more much vibrant. From the moment she was created, she was always distinctive and fascinating, in her mannierisms, her behaviour... And she only got cooler the longer you played her and the more we interacted.
My only real regret? That our timezones didn't align better. Well, and maybe that Isaiah didn't live to join Rin in a last trip Kingwards, to try and make some measure of peace :)

I remember the funny coincidence of us both getting our philosophy badges the same day, right before the ill-fated 64 expedition, our trips back and forth Baz'eel and, of course, the cool moments to help Phelan. I don't often comment on Obits but god damn did I love Rin. Despite my attitude towards Druids in main/sarcasm Rin has a special place in my heart.
