To confront the fact that Apothar Vergal's death was a boon to the entirety of Ephia's Well and that Apothar Vergal did not have some grand destiny beyond dying at your hand would be to confront the possibility that maybe Apothar is just a word and holds no greater meaning at all for the vast majority, including himself.
Male stubbornness and pride extend even to the short and sniveling, but personally, I would still prefer you not kill him.
