Title: help install on wine!!
Post by: oni_misho on May 19, 2014, 01:25:50 AM
I am running on Linux Ubuntu but I am new to using it. I was wondering if there was someone who has done this and can walk me through so I can start running on this server.

not quite what I wanted.

I don't understand some of the things they want me to do on the web page. If I could get someone on skype or something then I could have them walk me through what to do.

This thread (http://www.efupw.com/forums/showthread.php?t=82983) might be a little easier to understand.

For what it's worth I personally find having a bootcamp partition running Windows (for NWN) to be worth doing and not very difficult to set up.

wine has performance penalties in general. If possible, somehow run it through windows partition. Performance probably don't much affect old game like nwn, but it generally just is slower as it's limited to the virtual boundaries and has to run double the processing in a sense.

that's great that you are telling me all this but I don't understand. I don't know what a bootcamp partition is or how to make something run though a partition. I would be running on windows if I had a copy but I dont. I don't understand Linux or how to run or install anything on here and I need a guide to Guide me through it even if that means I have to call someone like people do for tech support.
I Have no clue what I am doing

I am sorry you are having some problems understanding. I would strongly recommend you to become comfortable with using search engines as they can be an excellent teaching tool when confronted by things you can't understand.

There are several possibilities open to you, you have to decide which would be best for you.

One option is to use Bootcamp (http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1461) to install Windows onto your PC. Here (http://www.pcworld.com/article/249059/how_to_install_boot_camp_and_run_windows_on_your_mac.html) is an easy guide for how to do that. Note that this requires acquiring a copy of Windows.

Another option is to install NWN directly onto your computer using Wineskin. If you look carefully again at this thread (http://www.efupw.com/forums/showthread.php?t=82983) Scotty has listed exactly what steps he needed to do with links to what you need to download.

If you are still unable to follow along I would suggest finding a more technically proficient friend to walk you through it.

I apologize for failing to notice that you were trying to install in Linux Ubuntu, for some reason I just assumed this was a post about trying to install NWN on OS X. So disregard my posts. I lose at reading comprehension it seems...

I have no experience with Linux and am unable to offer any assistance myself, unfortunately.

I've installed nwn in wine 1.7.18 and got it running fine.  What problems are you having?

As an addendum, if you are simply having problems with the game crashing at the beginning / failing to start a simple fix is to delete all the movies in the neverwinter/movies/  folder.  They use a proprietary format to play them that uses blinkx or someone's software which gave me trouble on other versions of wine and the current one.

Hello there. Maybe I can try to shed some light on Oni's problem. The game has installed fine, and he can go through it just as well, he is using NwN Diamond.
He can enter the game, go to multiplayer, and try to connect online. However, once he gets to this part a notification pops up and says "This is a new version of NWN. Would you like to update now? Yes/no." clicking on no keeps him from proceeding further, and clicking yes simply closes the game and does nothing else. I'm assuming what he needs is the critical rebuild patch, but I'm not entirely sure.

What update does he need if any, where can he locate it, and how can he install it through wine on his linux ubuntu system?

Edit: More importantly, he is trying to connect and play on this specific server more so than connect to the non-existent NWN server database.

If he is getting this error he needs to download and install the critical rebuild patch.

If you google "NwN Critical Rebuild Patch", you'll come to this in the NwVault

Alternatively.. You can just click here. (//%22http://nwvault.ign.com/View.php?view=Other.Detail&id=1505%22)

How about this?
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=2185841

This looks like the guide I used way back then, when I ran the game on Linux. It uses the linux-native files available on the DVD. (Google: nwn linux wolfram)

Tell me how it went if you try this option. :)
