If a character attacks three chickens, a horde of chickens should spawn nearby, go hostile, and attack said character.
Wouldn't that lead to an undending sea of fowl as the offending character defends themselves?

This is untrue. If a character attacks a chicken, a horde of chickens should appear and run away in random directions.
However, this suggestion would just cause ridiculous amounts of lag and be laughed about once or twice before there was rioting in the virtual streets.
