Title: Thief Mode Voice Command
Post by: Earmouse on April 12, 2009, 04:47:06 AM
Right now there's a thief mode you can initiate through the crafting menu in order to steal things discreetly. It'd be cool to have this in voice command form, so I wouldn't have to break stealth to activate it! I'm thinking... /c thief

Or something along the lines of /c activate theif_mode

ROUGE POWERS, ACTIVATE.

/c thief is probably the simplest thing, for brevity. Can it be done?

What does thief mode do, precisely? I can't remember seeing any posts about it!

If I remember right...
It allows a character to try and pick up items from loot containers and other such places without alerting others that the character is in fact, picking up something.

Caddies doesn't know something? HOT DAMN!

Normally when you collect an item, anyone in range sees you acquire it. Thief Mode means that you attempt to conceal picking up items, and people need to make a check to notice. I think it's Pick Pocket vs Spot or something. It is really so you can skim things off quests, pickpocket out a dropped bag etc.

We can probably do a better job of documenting this when we look at the scripts. I'm heading into exam season again, so another DM will have to do that.

To answer ninelives' question, we should be able to do that.

I broke down and added /c thief.

Here's it's documentation.

Quote* "Thief Mode" documentation:
 *
 *     When in thief mode, you roll Hide vs Spot (+1 per 2lb of item)
 * against any nearby PCs with line-of-sight to you. If you fail, they
 * notice you taking the item. If you succeed a secondary roll of
 * Spot vs 20 + (# you failed the first roll by), then you realize that they
 * noticed you.

Implemented in next version. Let me know if there are problems.

Does this mean that pickpocket isn't a factor at all?

Pickpocket is a very different thing from discretely filching things from a bag on the ground or picking up a dropped item, or so I would think.

Will there be any sort of bonus/penalty for line of sight type stuff?  Picking something up when everyone's back is turned vs picking something up when everyone is staring at you?

What about when you are invisible?  Do you get, perhaps, a massive hide bonus to pick stuff up when invis?

TBCH, pickpocket should be a factor...

Pickpocket shouldn't be a factor in my opinion. We don't support it in its truest form, so why support it here? A pickpocketer shouldn't have to subdue his opponent to pick his pocket, and stealing items from chests isn't really pickpocketing.

If thief mode was actually pickpocketing, sure. If we supported pickpocketing, sure. We don't, so I don't believe we should use the skill at all.

To address Jayde Moon's concerns, none of that has been factored in. I don't believe thief mode was ever popular, so I'd rather us dedicate time elsewhere, but if this becomes popular demand I wouldn't mind going through the trouble of detecting invisibility. As for whether we can detect people's backs and the like, I don't believe that's possible.

Pickpocket represents a charcter's sleight of hand and ability to take something from another without anyone noticing.
It's certainly a better indicator of skill at filching from chests than the ability to hide behind a rock. :P

Maybe if we supported pickpocket, I'd agree with you. If we end up implementing /c pickpocket, then I can change thief mode to account for pickpocket rolls, not hide rolls.

I shouldn't really complain, I mean... It does make things easier for the easily-beat-up rouge.
